What happens if Biden doesn't get Michigan?

occa · 04/11/2020 14:00

@CaveMum

Don’t forget that even if he loses, Trump will still be around till inauguration in January and he could cause havoc in that time. These threads will keep running for a while yet I suspect...
Exactly.

Either way the next few months are going to be carnage, whether it's Stephen Miller with his 'shock and awe' raft of hateful new immigration legislation and Trump running amok, completely unchecked, after a win or the current administration trying to burn the world down before they leave.

KungFuWeetabix · 04/11/2020 14:02

Biden has just overtaken Trump in Michegan.

anon444877 · 04/11/2020 14:02

If if Biden doesn't get MI (he will), he can win with PA, WI, GA and other combos - it's not a game over.

anon444877 · 04/11/2020 14:09

From Matt Viser (Washington post) on Twitter:

Biden campaign thinking:

  • They believe they’ve won Wisc, expect it to be called this morning
  • Mich vote by mail lead is insurmountable and will be called midday
  • Philly vote by mail will come in tonight or tomorrow
  • GA result midday or early afternoon
  • NV called tomorrow

The future is not orange!

Federal judge allows additional time after USPS turns down court order deadline to sweep facilities for undelivered mail-in ballots

The US Postal Service failed to meet a deadline set on Tuesday by US District Judge Emmet Sullivan to sweep facilities in several states for undelivered ballots and immediately send them to election officials, according to reporters. “There are only one or two Inspectors in any one facility, and thus they do not have the ability to personally scour the entire facility,” USPS said. Judge Sullivan later ordered USPS to “be prepared to discuss the apparent lack of compliance with the court’s order” at a noon hearing on Wednesday. However, Sullivan allowed the US Postal Service more time to sweep for possible missing ballots in mail processing centers in states including Pennsylvania, Colorado, Michigan and others.

I’m also very disappointed about Susan Collins Lobster

Trying to keep DH positive - he’s not ready to tear up his US passport yet but it got close last night...

Michigan Sec. of State Jocelyn Benson says early Wednesday that state election officials worked through the night to count votes and "that work continues."

She said hundreds of thousands of ballots in Michigan's largest jurisdictions are still being counted, including Detroit, Grand Rapids, Flint, Warren and Sterling Heights. Benson told CNN that the state is on track to have "a much more complete picture" by the end of the day.

"Every vote will count," Benson said on Twitter.

Her tweet included a graphic that says: "Voters decide elections. Not candidates."

How are the Senate races looking? I understand the Dems should hold the House but the Senate would be a massive bonus in holding Trump to account if the worst happens.

occa · 04/11/2020 14:22

Senate is super tight. CNN has the dems at 46 and repubs at 47 right now.

House is looking blue (touch wood).

KungFuWeetabix · 04/11/2020 14:22

I think it looks doubtful the democrats will take the senate.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 04/11/2020 14:23

Not a laughing matter for the people of Côte d’Ivoire and needs to be addressed but this coming today, from this WH...?

EwDavid · 04/11/2020 14:23

I've not been able to post for hours, argh! From what I'm reading on Twitter things look fairly positive at the moment. Not counting any chickens whatsoever but things could definitely be worse at this point.

KungFuWeetabix · 04/11/2020 14:23

I don't at all understand the Senate/House thing though!

How US elections work, explanation from an English person for other English people.
This is absolutely wonderful.

Watching CNN remaining hopeful.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 04/11/2020 14:37

Not sure if it means much but the bookies have Trump to win! Lol.

gchali · 04/11/2020 14:37

@AwaAnBileYerHeid All the bookies I've looked at have Biden as the favourite

AcrossthePond55 · 04/11/2020 14:38

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom Thanks. I slept about 5 hours but sure don't feel very rested. I haven't turned on the telly yet today, DH is still adamant he doesn't want to 'wallow in the waiting' and at this point I think I agree. At least until I've had more coffee.

My biggest concern (other than the result of course) right now is DS2. He suffers from PTSD and depression. He is not doing very well with the lack of a decisive decision. It made me think about, not just those of us with 'normal' coping skills who are fretting, but about how hard this must be for people with MH conditions whose coping skills are a bit fragile.

@HoldMyLobster I'm absolutely gobsmacked about Collins. I thought for sure she was a goner. I'm so sorry.

We'd had hopes that we'd be able to flip our Congressional District to blue, but it looks like it's not going to happen. It's a close race with 86% counted, but I'm not holding my breath.

SabrinaThwaite · 04/11/2020 14:42

@AwaAnBileYerHeid

Odds are very much favouring Biden at the moment (and shortening):

Biden 1/4
Trump 7/2

RedToothBrush · 04/11/2020 14:47

DH is doing some calculations on this.

We have the possibility that neither candidate can get 270 needed to win. And we also have the possibility of faithless electors coming into play.

It could be a real possibility on his calculations (though he thinks Biden might get it by the skin of his teeth - but that raises questions of how that will play out with Trump too)

So I guess we should be considering what is supposed to happen if neither do get 270.

In the unlikely event that President Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden become locked in a 269-269 tie, the House will break it, with each state delegation getting one vote, according to 270 to Win, a nonpartisan political website that projects elections.

“If neither candidate gets a majority of the 538 electoral votes, the election for President is decided in the House of Representatives, with each state delegation having one vote. A majority of states (26) is needed to win. Senators would elect the Vice-President, with each Senator having a vote. A majority of Senators (51) is needed to win,” the website states.

As it stands the democrats are on 180 seats to 171 seats in the House of Representatives. They need 218 to win.
I believe the Democrats are on track to win the House.

HOWEVER, experts were saying prior to today a 269/269 situation would most likely favour Trump...

HOWEVER

He does THINK Biden has scrapped it on the basis of whats still to come in...

Cam77 · 04/11/2020 14:49

Biden 1/6
