@SabrinaThwaite

This is the note that George H W Bush left for Bill Clinton in January 1993.

Hate to think what Trump will leave behind.

Trump will leave a floater in the gold loo.

That made me cry, Sabrina.

I should say, although I've lived in the UK for years I'm not British, and I have both conservative/libertarian family and liberal family members scattered all over North America. We generally get on, but I have noticed my con/lib family splitting sharply into those who love Trump and those who hate him. The ones who love him are, bluntly, the least financially & personally successful - so yes, I can see his flaws being comforting to them.

I can't believe that half the damned country is like my most dysfunctional cousins, though. So I find it easier to believe that a big chunk of those people are voting against something rather than for Trump.

Crying over George Bush's note here too

CaveMum · 05/11/2020 10:07

There’s also the note that the letter that Jenna and Barbara Bush wrote to Sasha and Malia Obama when they (The Obama girls) were leaving the White House

That’s how you do class.

BoreOfWhabylon · 05/11/2020 10:08

Oh, that note!

anewdispensation · 05/11/2020 10:10

Forgive me if this has been asked and answered but I see many people saying mail in votes are mainly democrats so will go to Biden.

Can someone explain why more democrats have voted by post in comparison to republicans? Is it an education thing, voter savvy was or a result of African Americans being historically disenfranchised?

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 05/11/2020 10:13

Trump and the republicans were telling voters not to vote by post, Democrats were encouraging it (plus their voters tend to be more covid safe).

RedToothBrush · 05/11/2020 10:14

@Blueberries0112

"Democrats need to be slightly more socially conservative going forward and to demonstrate that their version of 'socialism'"

Been there, done that. Ever heard of blue dog Democrats. There are other type of parties similar to it

Unfortunately then the democratic party won't survive the demographic and isnt as committed to democracy as they profess.

This isnt optional or a choice if you want democracy in america.

The alternative is the republican party sweeping in eventually and doing whatever it likes anyway or some kind of partition of the country which wouldn't be easy and would be accompied by huge amounts of civil unrest, violence and internal refugees.

The division in America either needs to be resolved or it will explode. Pick your poison. The demographics are not something you can fight against.

Identity politics only works so far for the democrats and ultimately we've seen its limits now.

Its in the hands of the democrats to make if they win the election. There isn't a lot of incentive for the republicans to shift position due to the demographics.

anewdispensation · 05/11/2020 10:21

Thanks @LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard that makes sense

anon444877 · 05/11/2020 10:30

No if anything the GOP can accurately claim they've reached more non white voters than anytime since the 1950s, dismal.

Yes all the democrat ads I saw showed people posting votes, several democrat friends posting photos of them posting their vote. Good strategy. Removes the need to get the vote out on the day.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 05/11/2020 10:32

This. This is Trumpism. This will only get worse if he is re-elected. I can't bear it.

Breaking: Arizona election center is forced to CLOSE after armed Trump thugs screaming 'count the vote!' claim the state being called for Biden is "too SOON." Trump voters either believe his lies or pretend to. Either way ARMED thugs must be banned from vote counting centers NOW!

Apileofballyhoo · 05/11/2020 10:33

From Pennsylvania last night - Snyder and Union counties are not going to count late arriving ballots. A friend posted but isn't up yet so I can't ask her. I thought all of Penn was going to count all the votes but it seems not.

It just makes a mockery of democracy.

How can this ever be acceptable. I actually despair.

Runningdownthathill · 05/11/2020 10:37

I heard today that Trump had told the mail service to go slow in Florida to delay postal votes reaching in time. If true, I am aghast. Is there nothing this man won’t stoop to? It’s verging on criminal.

TeddyDidIt · 05/11/2020 10:40

The irony that these people think they are protecting democracy. Wow.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 05/11/2020 10:41

I don't think it was only Florida Trump told to do that, @Runningdownthathill. But then, I am prepared to believe the absolute worst that anyone can think of Trump, and then descend a couple more circles into the unthinkable hell.

OvaHere · 05/11/2020 10:41

This division and everything ending up in the courts was exactly what I feared when I posted on the last thread on the morning of the 3rd. I wish there had been a clear mandate in one direction.

It looks like Biden might just take it but I'm fairly sure it's going to be 4 years of the other side yelling illegitimacy and #notmypresident because the country seems utterly divided. If Harris should end up taking over (because lets face it Biden is old) it will be even worse.

I stayed up late watching results come in initially and I can't help but think the way the process is run and the accompanying media holds some responsibility. I think having maps that flip between red and blue as the night goes on makes things worse, especially this year with so much postal voting. It makes it feel more tribal - like watching a sports team and I think that has a real psychological effect. Calling AZ so early didn't help and shouldn't have happened even if it does finally go to Biden.

I wonder if it would be better for votes to be counted then only announced once done. I can understand why voters, having watched a state stay blue/red on a map for many hours only to have it flip to the other at a late stage, feel like they've been cheated when in reality it's just because a larger populated/more partisan district was counted in at that point.

Seems utterly typical of this year that whatever the outcome it's not much of a win for either side. Biden as president will be severely hampered unless the Dems can make bigger inroads in the midterms.

nauticant · 05/11/2020 10:43

Trump and the republicans were telling voters not to vote by post

I've heard it said that this was tactical so that the initial count would go in Trump's favour to provide a chance to declare victory early and then on that basis push in the courts to halt the counts because the election was a done deal. I'd tend to dismiss this as fanciful except for the fact that the Trump campaign were already planning, before polling day, as to how they would launch challenges in the courts to halt counts. Echoing what happening in Florida in 2000.

@Singasonga thank you for that explanation, it helps me understand how some people close to me are thinking...

and I agree - HOW does HALF of the whole country go with him? I truly despair

TeddyDidIt · 05/11/2020 10:45

I agree @OvaHere Twitter is also terrible for stirring things up. Especially with the President on there getting his supporters more and more worked up.

pinkbalconyrailing · 05/11/2020 10:47

I agree ova the media circus seems very eurovision.

DressingGownofDoom · 05/11/2020 10:47

Every country deserves a calm and dignified leader, hopefully America gets theres and it might set an example for the rest of the world particularly the UK.
