To think that Trump is not going to get re-elected?

There are still a few fringe types who think he’s going to get a landslide victory.

Personally I find this unlikely.

Any MNers from across the pond have a view more informed than myself?

“Biden saying four more years of George” I think he said that on purpose, he is simply saying this is what you get if you vote for Trump, another George Bush.

blueangel19 · 26/10/2020 14:08

Yeah right!

Parker231 · 26/10/2020 14:14

Trump on Twitter earlier - We have made tremendous progress with the China Virus, but the Fake News refuses to talk about it this close to the Election. COVID, COVID, COVID is being used by them, in total coordination, in order to change our great early election numbers.Should be an election law violation!

TomMRiddle · 26/10/2020 14:17

@Coldwinds

The left won the popular vote last time, and if states electoral colleges divided up their votes by the proportion won by each candidate they would have won then too. Trump only won because of the electoral college being antiquated.

"People underestimated how unhappy people were with the status quo."

Trump is now the status quo, what has he done with 4 years so far?

Blueberries0112 · 26/10/2020 14:17

He is so racist. Only a racist would have no issue calling it China virus , after asked not to call it that, but he doesn’t care create stigma to those who are from China

Done? More like what he haven’t done and what he took away that people worked so hard to put in place.

That’s what conservative believe in, less government, less thing being done about it. They are all about individualism

Nothing. None of them ever do. Only the the left (and especially labour) convince themselves they are morally right and it’s their way or the high way - as in literally kicking people out of the party.

Trump got in because people could see the ‘good guys’ were corrupt. Now there is a bad guy who corrupt in. They are all as bad as each other.

JC lost because he didn’t align himself with his core original voters. Voters didn’t like him.

@Parker231

I remember being in the US a couple of years ago - in Trump territory. Got talking to some local people, really nice until they started on about Trump. It amazed me that intelligent people could think or believe the rubbish Trump comes up with. Twitter is full of him criticising everyone today due to reports about Covid not disappearing as he said it would.
TBH reading this thread also makes me realize how easily people are led. People saying Biden seems as bad as Trump, for example. People really do very little research and believe stuff just because it's out there.
HoldMyLobster · 26/10/2020 15:41

@Binswangers

To all those who are saying Trump was the only president to tackle the trade inequality between China and the US, all he's actually done is increase tariffs. This only makes it more expensive for Americans to buy Chinese products. But it's still not better for people to buy from US producers cf Chinese . He hasn't really addressed much. Although he hectors a lot and uses racist comments. I don't know if this is how he creates an image of 'doing something' in this regard.
It's actually made life a lot harder for a lot of businesses. My lobstering, farming and construction friends have all been fucked over by Trump's tariffs and China's retaliations.
TomMRiddle · 26/10/2020 15:46

JC lost the vote because or brexit.

Both brexit and trump won because the player to the most base prejudices and Trump didnt win the popular vote. There were not more Trump voters than Clinton

Sockmonster23 · 26/10/2020 15:49

Well Biden doesn’t even know who is up against? Seriously that man isn’t going to run America. I’m not big Trump fan but seriously Biden? 🤣

Same here - DS has to stop me biting a taxi driver who was yakking such a load of crap (hated foreigners but spent most of his life loving abroad 🙄, banging on about Joe was sooooooo creepy the way he touched a command shoulder...). He only stopped my from bottoms the driver because we were on the way to the airport and would have missed our flight.
FairFridaythe13th · 26/10/2020 15:55

Command - woman (autocorrect uses weird).

FairFridaythe13th · 26/10/2020 15:55

Uses - is 🙄🙄🙄

FairFridaythe13th · 26/10/2020 15:57

I think the orange one has finally lost the plot but Biden - oh the promises he has made for day one are terrible for women’s rights. It’s like having to choose between death by Bears or lions.

Yank here. Not RTFT. Waves at @HoldMyLobster Grin

Polling has gotten more sophisticated since 2016 and it was never really factored in how many people absolutely hated Hillary Clinton. And lots of people who voted for Trump the last time now realize what an empty suit he is.

I started following The Economist's election forecasting model about a month ago. It looks very well done. When I first saw it they gave him a 9% chance of being reelected. Now it's 4%.

projects.economist.com/us-2020-forecast/president

I think he's going to get his ass kicked, but we'll see.

FairFridaythe13th · 26/10/2020 16:02

You have my condolences... I have family over there and we all can’t quite believe that out of 300m (?) people that’s the best 2 you could find. I do realise we had bozza and jezza but still...

Waving back - are things going OK in your bit of the US? Did you vote yet?

safariboot · 26/10/2020 16:32

@Parker231

Biden isn’t a Corbyn, more a Blair.

If Trump looses next month it might be the best celebration of 2020!

For me it will be more relief. Relief that the world's only superpower and one of Britain's allies finally has someone competent in charge.
MimiDaisy11 · 26/10/2020 16:33

The polls weren't wildly off with Clinton. She got 2 million more votes and it was really only something like 50,000 which one it for Trump. I think Biden is less offensive than Clinton, plus are there really people who didn't vote for Trump last time who are energised to vote for him now? I hope not. I don't want to be too optimistic but I think Biden will win. I really hope I'm right.

Also don't despair if you look at early counts as the mail in votes get added later and more democrats are expected to vote that way. So unfortunately for conspiracy nuts it could look like Trumps winning and then there's a rapid turn in the other direction which I'm sure they'll love.

MimiDaisy11 · 26/10/2020 16:34

*won it

(not one it - LOL)

TomMRiddle · 26/10/2020 17:01

There were not more Trump voters than for Clinton, by 3 million.

Trump did play to peoples prejudices as did Brexit. No point pretending otherwise.

I'm tired of listening to people who claim it was about the left behind, well you know what ? They voted for campaigns run by people who want things to be run in their own interests, which will make things worse for the left behind. Pretending that the left made them do it absolves people from taking responsibility for their vote.

Wah the big left bullies, who have been in power for less than half of the last 40 years on both sides of the pond.
