To think that Trump is not going to get re-elected?

There are still a few fringe types who think he’s going to get a landslide victory.

Personally I find this unlikely.

Any MNers from across the pond have a view more informed than myself?

Hopefully this is a wake up call to any one still considering voting for Trump.

I’m afraid you are deeply naive if you think ANYTHING will act as a ‘wake-up call’ to Trump supporters. Confused

They don’t care. They do not care.

I still don’t think he’s going to win - because even though his hard core base supporters are immovable - there simply aren’t enough of them.

'U.S. intelligence agencies have for years documented Russian financial and military support to the Taliban, but a Russian program to incentivize the killing of American service members would represent a significant escalation.'

"I found what they presented to me very concerning, very worrisome. I just couldn't see the final connection, so I sent my guys back and said, look, keep digging. So we have continued to dig and look because this involves potential threats to U.S. forces, it's open," he said, adding, "I just haven't seen anything that closes that gap yet."

''The suggestion of a Russian bounty program began, another source directly familiar with the matter said, with a raid by CIA paramilitary officers that captured Taliban documents describing Russian payments.

A Taliban detainee told the CIA such a program existed, the source said, although the term "bounty" was never used. Later, the CIA was able to document financial transfers between Russian military intelligence and the Taliban, and establish there had been travel by key Russian officers to Afghanistan and by relevant Taliban figures to Russia.''

HelloToMyKitty · 26/10/2020 07:27

You have that timeline wrong though. The CIA made those claims and then upon review by the Defense Department, saw no evidence to back up any of those claims.

After they got the documents from the CIA, they made this determination:

Two months after top Pentagon officials vowed to get to the bottom of whether the Russian government bribed the Taliban to kill American service members, the commander of troops in the region says a detailed review of all available intelligence has not been able to corroborate the existence of such a program

And

A U.S. military official familiar with the intelligence added that after a review of the intelligence around each attack against Americans going back several years, none have been tied to any Russian incentive payments

You know, this came out two months later. When everyone has already moved on to the next ‘scandal’ so has been largely forgotten beyond the initial headlines

Given Mumsnetters' firm assumptions that we would 'remain' in the EU post Brexit referendum, then the same again at our last general election, the certainty Corbyn's Labour would get in

You must have been reading a different forum to me. Very few people believed Corbyn would win, let alone with any certainty. Some here supported him but knew he had an uphill battle, many believed he was unelectable.

It was pretty obvious from the polls, and the general feeling around the country, that Labour would lose.

This time those indicators are very much in Biden's favour.

PhilSwagielka · 26/10/2020 11:56

I thought Mumsnet as a whole hated Corbyn and we’re rooting for the Tories.

Parker231 · 26/10/2020 12:04

I much preferred Corbyn over Johnson and have high hopes with Starmer. I love listening to Starmer run rings around Johnson at PMQ’s.

Blueberries0112 · 26/10/2020 12:07

There is enough of trump supporters.

Yes more people vote Clinton, but that’s because more people couldn’t really decide since both never been president . This year , those same people just might Trump, again, because he is president and a familiar fact. I was fooled once and thought Clinton would win and a lot of women would vote for her especially after his gross comments about women but found out majority women voted Trump

Blueberries0112 · 26/10/2020 12:07

Face not fact

SillyUnMurphy · 26/10/2020 12:54

I think Trump will win. I think it’s easy to underestimate the amount of support he has in the deep seated Republican states. The majority of Americans are not ready for a President who is as left wing as Biden, the same way as the UK was not ready for Corbyn. I think that the Democrats make a lot of noise but more then likely don’t represent the majority of American views.
For the record; I despise Donald Trump but equally I think Biden would be a dreadful President. I feel very sorry for the American public, who have to choose between two such terrible candidates.

TomMRiddle · 26/10/2020 12:54

Trump didn't win the popular vote last time round, he won by a couple of hundred thousand votes spread across a few swing states. The size of his support doesn't matter, because the Dems will win more votes anyway, its where it is, a slight change could see him dumped out on the electoral college and popular vote combo ( cause the Dems always have to win both to be elected, not so the Reps).

Binswangers · 26/10/2020 13:23

To all those who are saying Trump was the only president to tackle the trade inequality between China and the US, all he's actually done is increase tariffs. This only makes it more expensive for Americans to buy Chinese products. But it's still not better for people to buy from US producers cf Chinese . He hasn't really addressed much. Although he hectors a lot and uses racist comments. I don't know if this is how he creates an image of 'doing something' in this regard.

TomMRiddle · 26/10/2020 13:27

I don't know how he creates an image of doing anything.

The trade deficit has increased.

He inherited a successful economy, and didn't introduce any fiscal policy till the end of 2017 which means at best, he can claim growth figues from about mid 2019 as his.

The wall isn't built, Hilary isn't in jail, US cities are on fire.

Is Biden really that left wing though?
TomMRiddle · 26/10/2020 13:32

Biden isn't very left wing at all.

It appears that the right wing have now just started shouting "socialist/communist" at every opponent because it seems to work.

Corbyn was no communist, at least his manifesto wasn't, Biden is no far leftist at all.

PhilSwagielka · 26/10/2020 13:33

The Overton window must have moved very far to the right.

safariboot · 26/10/2020 13:36

Don't assume Trump won't win.

Also don't assume he won't essentially pull of a coup, for example by getting the courts to declare mass numbers of early or mail-in ballots invalid.

And if he does, he'll be "Trump unchained". Emboldened by his victory and with no re-election to worry about. If you thought the last four years were bad, wait til you see four more.

MN on the whole hates - Tories Any even slightly left-leaning Labour MPs (inc Corbyn) People who voted Leave
bellinisurge · 26/10/2020 13:37

My US family think it is still possible he will win. It's all about getting the vote out.

TomMRiddle · 26/10/2020 13:44

"The Overton window must have moved very far to the right."

It really has, Eisenhower and Nixon policies would now be described as far left.

MN posters like to complain that its a left wing site but it was about 50/50 in the referendum, and certainly really quite Tory in the build up to 2019.

Although I think this is because right wingers like to play the victim all the time.

Parker231 · 26/10/2020 13:45

Biden isn’t a Corbyn, more a Blair.

If Trump looses next month it might be the best celebration of 2020!

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 26/10/2020 13:46

I’m a Brit living in the US and there is huge support for him where I live (not us...). Our neighbourhood is full of Trump yard signs, people are driving around with big Trump flags on their cars. I’ve seen plenty of ‘Trump 2020: Make Liberals Cry Again’ bumper stickers on people’s cars in our wider area. The local Christian Police Association were handing out Trump yard signs on the corner on multiple days last week. It’s very regional here. We moved from a large city to a suburb about 30 miles north and it’s like night and day. There are some very divisive issues that separate people politically here: even among families. My FIL and SIL and his side of the family (DH’s grandparents/aunts/uncles/cousins etc) are all voting for Trump. DH and my MIL are the only ones who aren’t (I’m a permanent resident, not a citizen, so no vote) and it has caused arguments.

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 26/10/2020 13:50

Also, in response to Biden being left wing, he isn’t really. Certainly not to a European. The Dems are closer to our Conservative party and the GOP is very right wing. There is just a completely different culture here, we’re not as similar as people seem to think. I had a HUGE culture shock when I moved (admittedly from a staunchly-Labour-for-generations area of the UK!) even though it was to a major city. People have a very individualist mindset here—collective/community responsibility is seen as a bad thing.

Coldwinds · 26/10/2020 13:52

I think trump will win - the trouble with the left is they overestimate how well they are liked.

Same thing happened with JC

Same thing happened with Brexit. People underestimated how unhappy people were with the status quo.

blueangel19 · 26/10/2020 13:53

‘Is Biden really that left wing though?’

This does not really matters because AOC and other democrats are counting on Kamala taking over and pressing on left radical policies.

Today I saw the video about Biden saying four more years of George ( meaning Trump) it was sad and I found Jill Biden very cruel allowing this to happen if he is having beginnings of dementia. I do not have to vote thank but why would people for a party that is already being dishonest this way.

Parker231 · 26/10/2020 13:55

I remember being in the US a couple of years ago - in Trump territory. Got talking to some local people, really nice until they started on about Trump. It amazed me that intelligent people could think or believe the rubbish Trump comes up with. Twitter is full of him criticising everyone today due to reports about Covid not disappearing as he said it would.
