Liverpool Mayor acknowledges school Covid transmission

Boredinautumn · 14/10/2020 10:53

Please see the tweet from the mayor.

Acknowledging that schools in Liverpool have more cases than hospitality. So with the highest tiered area, schools have contributed to infection rise.

twitter.com/mayor_anderson/status/1316106358664695808?s=20

Me on Saturday to No 10 officials “Gyms are safer than supermarkets, more COVID-19 transmissions come from our schools and retail than Gyms” response “we are not closing schools or restricting retail, so we can only go for Hospitality & leisure.“
Government decision not ours!

Not about schools, but the scenes of people cramming onto the streets last night and partying are utterly shameful.

Autumngoldleaf · 14/10/2020 15:52

Our scientist s have clearly stated that school children cannot transmit the virus.

Dr Jenny Harries carefully explained that children are sat at a sd with seats facing forward. Teachers remain sd at the front.

There for it cannot be transmitted in school.

What's the point to this post? It just comes across as a bit smug and smart arse, lots of policticans and scientists have said stuff that has turned out to be wrong, what do we gain by pointing out what is pretty much ancient history in virus terms.

We know it's not true, why is it relevant?

Chocobohead · 14/10/2020 16:02

I presumed @Autumngoldleaf was being sarcastic.

ChaChaCha2012 · 14/10/2020 16:04

How do you expect people to follow rules that aren't based in fact? It's entirely relevant to point this out when people are dying and losing their livelihoods as a result of shit advice.

(If we're talking about smug, Jenny Harries takes the prize for that one.)

NaughtipussMaximus · 14/10/2020 16:07

I think anyone who thinks the virus isn’t being transmitted in secondary schools especially are fooling themselves. Ditto retail. But education and the retail economy is deemed more important than hospitality so the pubs have to shut. To be honest, I’d be happy with everything non-essential shutting down if it meant schools can stay open longer.

I can’t decide if that’s sarcasm or you are just incredibly gullible. No one has claim Covid19 can’t be transmitted in schools the evidence clearly shows it can and it is.

Autumngoldleaf · 14/10/2020 16:10

She is not just "anyone" she is our deputy chief medical officer.

Autumngoldleaf · 14/10/2020 16:11

was she being sarcastic or gullible.. because that is what she said.

megletthesecond · 14/10/2020 16:11

If the children are breathing at school, then the virus can be transmitted there.
Harries is talking rubbish.

AldiAisleofCrap · 14/10/2020 16:11

@Autumngoldleaf oh wow not sarcasm then. Yes the same deputy chief medical officer that said masks had no benefit in helping to stop the spread of Covid19 ......

SnackSizeRaisin · 14/10/2020 16:12

I don't think that tweet is intended to be making a scientific statement about the relative amounts of covid transmission in different settings. It is just Joe Anderson passing the buck for the inevitable backlash that will result from closing pubs and gyms.
Yes there is bound to be some transmission in schools. I'm not aware of any large outbreaks associated with schools though. There have been large outbreaks associated with pubs and parties.

AldiAisleofCrap · 14/10/2020 16:13

@Autumngoldleaf was she being sarcastic or gullible.. because that is what she said. neither she was lying for political agenda and to keep her job.

Autumngoldleaf · 14/10/2020 16:16

BTW @ etiquette - I am on the thread there is no need to @ me.

She said very clearly that the evidence showed that masks are not needed because of the measures put in place.

Pumpkinnose · 14/10/2020 16:19

Schools should definitely stay open. The impact on workplaces is massive if they shut - it’s like a double whammy. Children must be prioritised and if that means pubs/gyms are shut then so be it. Tough choices.

dorispiffle · 14/10/2020 16:30

She also was a strong advocate for herd immunity, wanted Cheltenham to go ahead and very strongly toes the party line...

RubyViolet · 14/10/2020 16:33

Did Harries straight out lie to the public 🤔

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 14/10/2020 16:40

I’m hoping autumn is making a point

Im sure she doesn’t believe it 😀

Venicelover · 14/10/2020 16:52

I saw a stat which said that only 8% of the workforce had Primary aged children. If that is correct, then that seems like a very small figure to me.

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 14/10/2020 16:58

Teachers have been saying this for minths but the Us4Them mob just tell them to get on with it. Their health doesn't matter.

Schools can't close is the mantra but slowly they are. How many ill teachers will it take before the government admits their mistake?

RubyandBen · 14/10/2020 17:02

Education is essential, hospitality is unfortunately not. I personally don't think either should shut though.

Iamnotthe1 · 14/10/2020 17:07

I, too, thought this was sarcastic.

Children are not socially distancing at school. The guidance from the DfE made it clear that they didn't have to. The guidance also made clear that, at primary, no social distancing between adults and children was required.

Her statement is based on those and so is factually untrue.

The number of outbreaks that PHE have listed as being transmitted in schools also disproves this.

LakieLady · 14/10/2020 17:11

A colleague has been absolutely obsessive about staying safe from Covid. She was shielding because she is asthmatic and has some sort of blood clotting disorder.

Her daughter, primary age, went back to school at the start of term. Her school closed a little while ago because of some children and/or staff testing positive and reopened on Monday.

Colleague started to show Covid symptoms last week and has now tested positive for Covid. She is quite unwell, but thankfully not (so far) hospitalised. She is supposedly being closely monitored, although I'm unclear as to how.

Given that the only person she has had contact with is her daughter, I'm mystified as to how she got it if children can't transmit it. She's had all shopping delivered, dropped her daughter off at school by car, wears a mask when she opens the door and hasn't seen a soul.

Fluffybutter · 14/10/2020 17:19

So what do you suggest ? Close schools again ?
No thank you .
Education is much more important than the ability to have a pint or go on the treadmill right now .
What about all the fucking idiots crammed together attacking the police car last night ? That’s ok is it?

Fluffybutter · 14/10/2020 17:21

But what do you want them to do?? Keep children at home forever ? How will they learn properly, how will parents work and keep a roof over their heads if they now have to stay home ?!
