Can you be pardoned for something that you haven't been charged with?
Hey, you're pardoned for any wrongdoing wherever whenever. Hey put that gun down!
Yes. Ford gave Nixon 'a full and complete pardon for any and all crimes he may have committed whilst he was president' a month after Nixon resigned.
I'm sure Scrotus' potential resignation has been discussed. I'm sure they're discussing every possible which-way to avoid criminal prosecution. Scrotus being put on trial will start a huge domino effect in criminal cases against everyone in his circle. If he goes down, he's going to take every one of them down with him. He's going to sing like a canary and try to put the blame on everyone but himself. I wonder if even Ivanka will be immune.
As far as Scrotus resigning nothing will happen until after the election. When Biden is confirmed as the winner it's quite possible that Scrotus will resign under the condition that Pence will pardon him. Or he may choose to ride out the term and then pardon himself (Nixon considered doing it) right before the inauguration.
Even though the first scenario would be 'right and tight' based on the Nixon pardon, I think the second scenario would be more to his taste. He'd see it as a final exercise of his 'absolute power'. It would also tie up any criminal case for years as they'd have to fight through the courts on the issue of 'self pardon' first. Plus with his stacked SCOTUS, they may well rule in his favour.
Would his ego overrule his instinct for survival? Who knows.
There's still the issue of charges brought by NY and any other state. Presidential pardons are only for federal crimes. They'd have no reason or incentive to agree to drop the charges.
