AOC is a great person for detail and hearings and questioning but, (correct me if I'm wrong) she is hugely polarising and unpopular isn't she?

Kamala ... oh my, I would love her to become POTUS. I have a pash on her big time, she's taking time out for the Coney Barrett hrearings. She will not be allowed to get away with anything with Harris on to it.

@CaveMum - but you'll surely agree that President Kennedy was both vigorous and young, in terms of US politics, which is what I was talking about!

HoldMyLobster · 30/09/2020 20:53

I find Trump Jr even more vile than his father, and it's been fun watching him try to claim that his father misspoke. I'd like to have seen his face during the debate when 45 used the phrase "stand back and stand by". And that's saying something, because seeing his face genuinely makes me shudder.

I also loved this tweet from The Lincoln Project.

Donald Trump is a child. He's weak. He's unhinged. He's desperate.

And he's sweaty.

GetTheDoorFrank · 30/09/2020 21:15

Im still flabbergasted at how ghastly trump was in the debate. He doesnt deserve to be president right now never mind for 4 more years. He is a toxic creep of a man and america needs to ltb a la mumsnet on november 3rd to be free from him so he can be brought to task over his appalling practices

ludothedog · 30/09/2020 21:36

I didn't watch the debate, which clearly was a good move, as my blood pressure wouldn't take it. Well done to those of you who managed to watch some if not all!

Things move so fast in Trump world and TBH I'm still processing his tax dodging and clearly criminal behaviour which is still shocking if not expected.

Remember at the beginning of the last thread we were posting about cans of soup as weapons?? We really need some way of keeping record of all the shit that goes on as it's all too much and easily forgotten due to the constant stream of craziness.

Anniegetyourgun · 30/09/2020 21:46

Speaking of creeps, there were a couple of posters on that "who would you vote for" thread giving links to videos of Biden allegedly being, well, creepy. Apparently they were only a small sample of the material that used to be on Youtube Hmm. I did not click on them. OK, what's the rest of the story? Asking here because posters in this neck of the woods tend to be, by and large, fairly switched on with only occasional incursions by Russobots, whereas the other thread was a lot more... eclectic.

lljkk · 30/09/2020 21:49

All I could think about that debate was this truism.

Trump referred to 'crackhead Hunter' on a tv show today.

See this Article- says it all.
Donald Trump Is America’s Abusive Father. The debate was hard to watch because abuse is hard to watch.

The bots certainly go to town on Biden on that score Annie, even before he became the nominee. Not enough boundaries, too tactile etc.

I think it's too much of a double edged sword for them though, on account of Trump's hideous predatory history and the law suits (ongoing).

AcrossthePond55 · 30/09/2020 22:00

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime

"Donald Trump ruined the biggest layup in the history of debates by not condemning white supremacists," said Fox News host Brian Kilmeade. "I don't know if he didn't hear it, but he's gotta clarify that right away.

He heard it just fine, and he clarified that with his shout-out to the Proud Boys shortly afterwards. I conclude that Brian Kilmeade wasn't really listening.

I agree, Scrotus heard it just fine. I do think, however, that Scrotus is unable to think ill of anyone who thinks well of him. The Proud Boys love him, therefore the Proud Boys must be some of those 'fine people' Scrotus spoke about after Charlottesville.

Kilmeade is simply trying to reason away the real meaning behind Scrotus' comment.

lionheart · 30/09/2020 22:05

Yes it is vlnr77yac.

The lies, manipulation, aggression, insults, bullying, narcissism and the smug bastardy pride overlays it all.

All that is Trump.

I did chuckle at this

Biden was brought up in the Hippy era, when hugging people was standard. Most of the people he has hugged saw it for what it was: someone opening himself to them. A few interpreted it as him invading their space rather than him taking them into his.

Unlike Trump, he doesn't ring any alarm bells in me at all; I have met a lot of people who hug, and I would hug Biden without any hesitation, though I suspect the poor man is now terrified of any contact at all. I doubt anyone who wasn't being paid to do so one way or another has ever hugged Trump... and he couldn't pay me enough.

CaveMum · 30/09/2020 22:21

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom oh of course he did bring youthful energy, that is most definitely missing these days!

I can never get my head round why Americans keep on putting up old men for election! One of these days one of them will keel over in Office.

Biden has been well known to be a 'physical' person. You know, the type that hugs people and is prone to displays of affection and for gestures of physical comfort. Back in the day this was seen as acceptable. He has acknowledged that he now realizes that some of his displays of affection/comfort may have been inappropriate* in light of today's more 'physically conservative' mores. He apologized if any of his well-meaning gestures caused discomfort and vowed to be more careful in future.

That is what a mature and responsible person does. Listens, apologizes, and learns. Not like Scrotus who simply blusters and says either that the 'never did it' or it was 'fine to do it'. That man is constitutionally unable to apologize for anything. Nothing he does is ever wrong. Or if it is it's not his fault.

*I don't mean 'inappropriate' in that he deliberately touched someone in a sexual way. I mean a hug or a touch before thinking of whether the gesture may be wanted or not.

Anniegetyourgun · 30/09/2020 22:27

Thanks lionheart and Asking. I'm not at all surprised to hear it. I'm not that keen on random huggings myself, but he certainly comes over as a warm hugger rather than a sleazy grabber - although I suppose one can never be entirely sure. I suppose it's also possible he's paid off a load of escorts but nobody's found his Michael Cohen yet - but I'd say that is unlikely. They wouldn't have had to go all the way to Ukraine to manufacture seek out dirt if there had been genuine instances on the doorstep.

PerkingFaintly · 30/09/2020 22:28

Anniegetyourgun I saw a bit of that thread, including the claim that there are really damaging videos... but they're conveniently no longer on YouTube to be viewed and assessed.

Like you, I am HmmHmm about that claim.

Anything genuine, and genuinely damaging, would have been saved and re-uploaded and distributed by every means, not just on YouTube. It would have been pasted all up and down MN and every other social media space in the English-speaking world.

So, although I could be wrong, I'm going to guess that the shocking, scandalous exposé videos they're talking about are the sort which did indeed get pumped on MN, with slogans about Biden being creepy. The ones I saw were compilations of snips of Biden on stages and in photo shoots with people, including women and children. The complaint was that he was standing too close behind some of the women (and allegedly sniffing their hair), and that he put his hands on the shoulders of some of the children in the posed groups for the camera.

Now, maybe there is something wrong in some of that. It's not the same ballpark as a man who is bragging about the details of how he sexually assaults women, how he gets away with it because he's rich, and who is having to pay off women he slept with just after his wife had given birth.

But if someone's uncomfortable with being held on the shoulder or having an arm draped round them during a photo or while being spoken to – and a lot of children and adults don't like it – then no one should be doing that.

Anniegetyourgun · 30/09/2020 22:35

... and Across. Yes, that. They were implying on the other thread that he was unhealthily interested in small children. Nasty stuff, and no doubt some of it will stick. The vaguer the details, it seems, the more likely some people are to let it (probably subconsciously) affect their voting intentions. A voice recording of the other guy boasting about carrying out sexual assaults on a regular basis though, that's nothing, that's just fun stuff.

AcrossthePond55 · 30/09/2020 22:35

It's happened four times. William Henry Harrison, Zachary Taylor, Warren G Harding, and Franklin D Roosevelt all died in office of natural causes.

There have also been four assassinations: Abraham Lincoln, James A Garfield, William McKinley, and John F Kennedy.

Anniegetyourgun · 30/09/2020 22:36

Ach, now there's a spectacular cross-post! I agree, Perking.

Justanotherlurker · 30/09/2020 22:36

I like how these threads have done a full 180 with regards to sexual harrassment, old pale and stale white man, what could be considered racist blunders. It highlights how partisan American politics has become, 4 years later the same people who where decrying such problems are now defending them because it is the 'good side'

The debates showed that is it a case of chosing who is less shit, I hope BIden wins, but I don't think a lot of the press or current biden supporters will like the same rehtoric that will be justifiable used against them.

I'm just glad that UK politics isn't as bad as it seems, we had people eating Bacon Sarnies a bit weird and someone who apparently fucked a pigs head as being wrong in our political system, I think i will take that over the current situation between biden and trump tbh.

AcrossthePond55 · 30/09/2020 22:42

Perking I'm with you. I firmly believe that nothing completely disappears from the internet. If there was truly 'creepy' video out there someone would have it cached or saved somewhere an it would have made its way back online by now.

Annie I think the 'unhealthy interest in children' crap is to play into that QAnon conspiracy theory about the Dems being a 'child abuse ring' that 'kills babies for satanic rituals'. Absolute bullshit.
