This obsession with blue eyes! Anyone else?

Honestly, I know it's a minor thing but it's really starting to annoy me! 🤣

Dh and I both have hazel eyes. We are white but more olivey skin (not that it matters!) Ds is the spitting image of me as a baby and his eyes are still that changeable very dark blue/brown colour, but looks dark in most lights. He has basically the same eyes I did as a baby and most of the time they look hazel, but I guess they haven't quite set yet. Mine didn't set until 1. He is 9 months. (Other babies we know with blue eyed parents have proper blue eyes - ds has never looked very blue!) Also neither DH or myself are blue!!

Pil are both blue and hazel eyed and mil is the blue eyed one and is obsessed that our baby will have blue eyes! Every time she visits (maybe 6 or 7 times now) it's "his eyes look blue! Are they blue?" Then looks disappointed when we say no. I'm not kidding. Every time she comes in! I actually have an intake of breath now. She then makes the odd comment of "well they look blue to me." as if I'm making it up. Confused

I actually find it quite offensive. Dark eyes are attractive you know! Her son has them! And ds has my eyes!
She even made some comment about how her other son has blue eyes and how beautiful they are.

Anyone else have people like this? Blue eyes are no nicer than dark eyes. Hazel eyes are beautiful thank you very much!

You should Google black babies with blue eyes. The most beautiful thing that you could imagine!

ohbovva · 13/08/2020 19:01

@Arthersleep a huge number of those photos are photoshopped.

Blue eyes aren’t rare ! I’m blonde with blue eyes. my husband is dark with brown eyes. All my kids are dark with brown eyes (Different shades) and they’re all gorgeous . I wish one of them looked like me but not because I think blue eyes are nicer .

MulticolourMophead · 13/08/2020 19:14

@Abouttimemum

DH has really dark brown eyes (Almost black sometimes) and I love them! I really thought DS would have brown but his are bright blue (he’s 16 months) My dad is obsessed with the fact the blue eyes are from him (He’s the only one on either side with blue eyes) but I have green and based on my basic biology knowledge I thought green was the most recessive therefore the blue must come from DH side. I don’t say anything mind, just nod and agree. DS is the spit of my husband so I let my dad have this! Perhaps someone with more knowledge can explain. I don’t really have a favourite eye colour, I love them all and we have all 3 in our little family!
For your DS to have blue eyes, both you and your DH will be carrying and have passed on the recessive blue gene.
@Skyliner001 thanks for putting me in my blue eyed place!
One brown eyed daughter and one blue. People ALWAYS comment on the blue eyes, often in front of my other daughter who luckily is happy that she matches me.

0blio · 13/08/2020 19:22

@ShinyMe

It's only because blue eyes are so rare.
It depends on where you are from surely? I'm Scottish and most people I know including all my family members have blue eyes, so to me they're really common!
Bananabread8 · 13/08/2020 19:25

@MsPeachh

I do think there needs to be more love for other eye colours! I hear lots of people saying they don't like their "boring" brown eyes whereas I think it's wonderful getting lost in deep, dark brown eyes. They have a lovely warmth about them.
I must confess I moan to my mum that me and my siblings have boring eyes... (dark brown). Other eye colours blue & green do get glorified massively as well as they are rarer. I think hazel eyes are beautiful!!
EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 13/08/2020 19:26

hadn't realised a rarity - I like mine Smile

Blue eyes are rarer. That’s probably why your kids have not taken after your blue eyes! It does tend to be people who are fair haired who have blue eyes too.
QuizzlyBear · 13/08/2020 19:30

I'm the only person in my family with green eyes and I must admit I was a bit disappointed not to pass that down to DS1. His DF has brown eyes and his are just the same.

When DS2 came along it gave me a real thrill to see his eyes lighten (never quite made it to green!) and I felt excited that I may have passed down something so tangible. Not sure why!

I imagine your MIL feels the same - but it's no reflection on you, I doubt she realises how it makes you feel.

nevergoingoutagain · 13/08/2020 19:34

All my kids plus me and dh have dark brown eyes. All 3 DC where born with navy/black eyes which switched to brown within weeks. Everybody always comments on them. No mine ever commented on my stepdaughters blue eyes 🤷🏻‍♀️

Lemonyfuckit · 13/08/2020 19:35

I thought (but it's not my area by any stretch) that as a recessive gene, if neither parent has blue eyes then the children definitely won't have blue eyes?

I am a redhead so I must have two red genes, and my DP is Scottish with 'Celtic' pale skin and freckles, albeit brown hair, so I am hoping that he might have a red gene hiding in there too that future children could inherit. But obviously it doesn't matter of course, all eye and hair colours are equally lovely.

DeeTractor · 13/08/2020 19:37

Has anyone pointed out that blue eyes aren't rare in the UK? I'm not sure that anyone has mentioned it have they...?

vegansprinkle · 13/08/2020 19:39

I have green eyes. My grandmother and two of my cousins have them. Everyone else on both sides of the family has blue eyes.

I don't find blue eyes particularly attractive, I prefer brown. DH is the only boyfriend I ever had with blue eyes, and all four of my kids have inherited his big blue eyes!

We do get stopped a lot and people comment on them (we live outside of UK and brown eyes are the norm here). The kids love their eyes and like to point out the colours, and that they all have the same, and that I am different.

They are all beautiful.

My MIL does this crazy thing with food where she comments that she doesn't understand why the kids will eat certain foods when DH refused to eat them as a kid, and she doesn't stop no matter how many times I tell her that I liked them and they are 50% me ... she only wants to see the links on her side. I let her crack on with it...

GhostCurry · 13/08/2020 19:49

Absolutely loving the fact that about half the posters on here claim to have green eyes. Would be interested to see photographs ... I have probably met one person in my life with actual green eyes, but they seem extremely common on here?!

DanniArthur · 13/08/2020 19:51

I know what you mean OP. While I think all eyes are beautiful especially babies big die eyes, IME blue eyes do seem to attract attention.
DD has the same very bright blue eyes I do and the reaction we get from some people is a bit odd. She is also very fair and strawberry blonde with blue eyes which is again a rare combination even in Scotland. I've had people stop me in the street to comment on her eyes and once had a man chase me down the street shouting "you and your daughter have angel eyes" lol it is a bit strange!

ginghamtablecloths · 13/08/2020 19:52

It may be an obsession with MIL. Mine was obsessed with curly hair and kept telling me how lucky I was to have it 'because I didn't have to curl it' as thought it was compulsory. It was mentioned every single visit until I wanted to strangle her. You don't have any control over it so I'd just advise you to change the subject.

DanniArthur · 13/08/2020 19:52

*DOE eyes not die lol

Lelophants · 13/08/2020 19:58

Most green eyes look blue to me. A lot of Turkish people have green eyes (also find they show up more on darker skin).

“Most green eyes look blue to me.”

Me too. That’s because a lot of people who claim to have green eyes actually have blue eyes Wink

vegansprinkle · 13/08/2020 20:13

@GhostCurry I know quite a few people who have them? It's definitely in the minority compared to blue and brown but not uncommon or rare. Here's a picture of my eye... Sorry not the best photo but all I can do right now

Not quite as lovely as the photo above me but I'm fairly sure mine are green!

We were on holiday once and another guest came up to my daughter and asked ‘who do you belong to’ as she has bright blue eyes, and both me and DH have brown eyes. My son was born with dark brown eyes, which are equally as distinct and stunning. It’s quite strange as both children have beautiful eyes and mine and DH’s are average at best!
