What do mums advise for a 13 year old girl with quite a lot of underarm hair. Not fine and fair, but dark and wiry. Should I find a cream to remove it? She is very self conscious. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Buy her a razor. Job done.

C4tintherug · 04/07/2020 19:59

As above, a razor. Think my daughter started razor on underarm hair aged about 10!

Notthisnotthat · 04/07/2020 20:00

My 11 year old has underarm hair, very conscious of it and wanted it off so we used veet sensitive cream that first couple of times. She has helped me wax mine during lockdown but hers is probably too fair and light at the moment.

Lilybet1980 · 04/07/2020 20:00

Shave it. Quick and easy. The creams are awful.

Goosefoot · 04/07/2020 20:00

Hair removal cream can be harsh, I'd go for a razor if she wants. If she doesn't want to, why do anything?

LibrariesGiveUsPower · 04/07/2020 20:00

Razor and Gillette men’s sensitive gel. Much better than ladies stuff.

Aquamarine1029 · 04/07/2020 20:01

The creams are awful.

Yes, they are. They chemicals in that rubbish are appalling.

mbosnz · 04/07/2020 20:01

Razor and shower gel. Mine has been shaving since around 10-11, poor kid.

IHateCoronavirus · 04/07/2020 20:03

I bought a lady shave for DD as a safe way to leave the decision in her hands, but she is only 10 and in the same boat. She rarely uses it but asked for the hair to be removed when she went swimming with school.

IwishIhadaMargarita · 04/07/2020 20:04

I started shaving my underarms at 12. Give her a razor and show her how to do it.

ComDummings · 04/07/2020 20:04

Weird thing to start a thread about, the obvious answer is a razor

Waveysnail · 04/07/2020 20:06

This is my fav. Wet and shave

What do you do with yours? I agree, buy a razor.

rosiejaune · 04/07/2020 20:07

Teach her not to hate her body? Perhaps leading by example if you don't already.

Or wee was strips for your face are great for under arm hair. U could use some lidocaine cream before hand so not so painful.

Aquamarine1029 · 04/07/2020 20:09

Not wanting underarm hair means you hate your body? Sure it does. Hmm

scunner · 04/07/2020 20:09

Thank you for the helpful replies. I wasn’t sure which was the least harsh. Normally wouldn’t affect her, but it’s swimming where she is self conscious.

ComDummings why on earth is it weird? I came on here for advice!

I was 11 years old when I started shaving my underarms. The hair was noticeable and I danced and swam a lot. My Mam gave me initially veet and I hated it! Straight to Shaving after that!

BadAlice · 04/07/2020 20:10

Let her choose what she wants to do? Talk to her about underarm hair being a totally normal and healthy part of her body (literally google ‘female celebrities with underarm hair’ as a starting point) and then give her the options of shaving, waxing or hair removal a cream and let her decide? She’s old enough to do her own research really.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 04/07/2020 20:12

As someone with dark wiry hair at a young age on my legs and under arms and a mother who refused to allow me do anything with it, I would follow her lead, and reccomend to her that she use a sensitive razor and plenty of shave cream.

Luckypoppy · 04/07/2020 20:14

13 is normal for underarm hair so I'd probably encourage her to learn to shave it.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 04/07/2020 20:14

11 year old has a ladyshave, she loves it.

gerbo · 04/07/2020 20:15

My dd who's 13 has an electric razor. Think it's a Braun Lady Shave, from Boots. She uses it independently, no problems. I felt it was a gentle and safe start to shaving. Sure she'll use a razor eventually as I did.

AllTheWhoresOfMalta · 04/07/2020 20:15

I brought an epilator a couple of years ago and it’s really changed my underarm hair game. It’s always been wiry and dark and hard to get rid of even with the most expensive razor, and I’ve always had a shadow, even immediately after shaving, but this gets rid of everything quickly and efficiently and it doesn’t immediately grow back within a couple of days. Highly recommend.
