What do mums advise for a 13 year old girl with quite a lot of underarm hair. Not fine and fair, but dark and wiry. Should I find a cream to remove it? She is very self conscious. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Electric razor. I got a braun one, dd uses the razor head, I use the epilator head.

@rosiejaune

Teach her not to hate her body? Perhaps leading by example if you don't already.

Really?!! Hmm

Do you not understand the concept of peer pressure, and how 13 year olds desperately do not want to feel different or have fun poked at them?

My DD was very hairy and dark too when she was around 12. She was very self concious, so i got her a razor for underarms, hair removal cream for arms (very dark long hair) and legs. I started taking her with me for threading and she got upper lip and eyebrows. She is 16 now and has a good routine

Going against advice here but my 10 year old has just started Al this hair growth. I'm seriously thinking taking advice from a woman I worked with years ago who said her Mam sent her for waxing. Legs and underarm very young, she said whilst it was wasn't pleasant but she was so grateful as a 20 year old as she barely had any hair rather than razor stubble

Friction Free Shaving, best razor I’ve ever had and am yet to chop off a limb, whereas before I had ripped off two finger nails, chopped my legs up, cut my pinky, have a scar on my ankle.... etc etc 🤣 they’re also cute razors and you can get them engraved for free

As long as you let her do something. My mum didn’t allow me to shave. Said it would grow back thicker. I hated it. Secretly started doing it at around 14.

I shave my armpit hair...not because I hate my body but because it feels nicer and deodorant works more effectively without it. That ok?

I am very hairy and for underarms, I find a dry shave with a trimmer is the softest on my skin. Even a wet shave is quite harsh and can lead to ingrowns if you are a bit that way inclined.
I don't think you are teaching her to hate her body - but you are watching / helping her conform to cultural norms - some of which are oppressive. If I had a daugher I would be helping with the practical side but also talking to her about that. It's not either / or surely.

Oh and OP a razor will take care of it if it’s bothering her. My trick is to run my hand over my hair when I’m conditioning my hair and use the conditioner to do a quick swipe over pits and legs with the razor. I takes 2 minutes and means I’m always smooth.

Personally I think it’s ridiculous that women are supposed to be smooth and hairless, particularly when it comes to the legs...but I wear shorts a lot and admittedly don’t want people looking at my hairy legs and saying yuck.
So shoot me.

How do you get from shaving excess hair to hating your body? My body is a damned sight more than an inconvenient bit of hair!

Does she want to get rid of it?

If so just leave razors in the bathroom but don't make a thing of it.

Me and my dds use razors. We've got ladyshaves too

@traincarbus same here, my mother has never shaved under her arms or her legs, I used to shave in secret using my dads old fashioned razor where you had to change the blades, surely giving a pre teen a pack of disposables would have been safer.

When DD was about 10 I made her a pack up as a gift, razors, fancy shower gels, sanitary pads, lip gloss and all sorts of bits and pieces, it went down really well.

My 10 year old removes hers. Sometimes with a razor but mostly opts for hair removal cream.

Probs controversial but I was a 13 yr old with pale skim and mega dark hair. If DD takes after me I will be using my IPL on her. Shaving used to help but you could still see the dark follicle under the skin, not fun when you're developing embarrassment etc

I've tried many razors Poppyfields21 but knobbly knees amd horrendously mean it always ends up a bit 'Carrie', so I'll stick to waxing Grin.
Each to their own. Just personal experience 🤷‍♀️

I don't remove my body hair so can't give advice on the best way to do it but I wanted to say that at 13 it's completely up to her, and if she's self-conscious about it of course she should be able to remove it. As long as she's aware that some women don't, it's a choice, and there's nothing wrong with the hair.

Love how you automatically assume wanting to shave off underarm hair means you hate your body, what a leap! Says more about you and your issues than anything else.

Whatever you do, please teach her/show her how to shave!
I shaved a bit of my leg off when I first used a razor... did a dry shave and all Blush

Hi, I had very hairy legs at 13 and DID shave them unbeknownst to Mum after which I've (very rarely) shaved anything as don't want them to come back stronger and which she told me about!

Absolutely agree with a past poster an epilator does the job with no shadow. Haven't done mine for weeks now but you can't see it. Epilator makes everything better over time.

Would not use it on more sensitive areas though. Just because it hurts and possibly because skin isn't so taut. (Can't wait to be able to get a salon appointment)
