To think 8.00am isn't too early ...

To mow the grass?

We have a very quiet electric mower. And most mornings there are delivery lorries/vans making a racket at 8 (the whole street seems to be extending their house atm, we have a builder's lorry almost every day and they always come early).

The sun is on the back garden until gone 6pm, I work until 2.30 and by the time the grass is in the shade I'm frankly knackered.

Would it really BU to give it a quick mow at 8?

I go for 9am (and only on week days) sometimes 8.45am as I think 8am is a bit early (particularly as just about all 6 immediate neighbours are retired).

alittlerespectgoesalongway · 08/06/2020 21:38

Would you mind if someone mowed the grass at midnight? For a night owl that's perfectly reasonable - as is 8 am for a lark. I think we all have to try and accommodate each other.

RiftGibbon · 08/06/2020 21:44

Haven't Moen my lawn sincearch, other than a pathway through it.

Waveysnail · 08/06/2020 21:45

Yep too early. 9.30 week days at the earliest

RiftGibbon · 08/06/2020 21:48

Well that got mangled! "mown" and "since March"

GlitteryUnicornSparkles · 08/06/2020 21:50

Its perfectly legal. Also makes sense in that its cooler at that hour.

I leave for work at 7.30am so wouldn’t be home at that time anyway, on my days of I’m at least half awake by 7 because the dog and cats pester to be fed and go out and won’t sleep in past this most days so it wouldn’t bother me.

heartsonacake · 08/06/2020 21:53

Its perfectly legal.

GlitteryUnicornSparkles Nobody said it’s illegal Confused But something being legal doesn’t stop you being an arse for doing it.

Alexsay · 08/06/2020 21:55

Even though it's technically legal to begin noise at that time, I'd be annoyed at neighbours. After a bad night's sleep, that's prime extra snooze/possible extra hour sleep time. I would be cursing neighbours. 9am is far more reasonable - 9.30 even better.

WeAllHaveWings · 08/06/2020 21:57

Between 9-10 is much better for the grass as the dew will be completely dried by then. Or late afternoon when our is a little cooler, after 6pm is too late as the lawn doesn't have time to recover before night.

Alexsay · 08/06/2020 21:59

And binmen/milkmen is different as it's usually a quick over and done with noise- plus it's their job. They're not selecting that specific time of day to make a racket. A neighbour choosing to mow their lawn at that time over any other time is just very inconsiderate. And I'm usually up pretty early too!

Bicnod · 08/06/2020 22:02

I don't let the kids outside until 9am as don't want to disturb the neighbours so I would say 8am probably too early for mowing lawn.

jmh740 · 08/06/2020 22:03

Too early 9am at the earliest but I would leave it to 10 at least

bengalcat · 08/06/2020 22:04

I’m out of the house for work by 7 so 8am would be fine by me .

MiniMum97 · 08/06/2020 22:04

Way too early. I would be fuming.

ImFree2doasiwant · 08/06/2020 22:06

I would, but my neighbours are all elderly ex farm workers who get up at 6am, so I know it wouldn't bother them.

(When I say I would, I actually wouldn't because I do it later)

Thisismytimetoshine · 08/06/2020 22:06

@bengalcat

I’m out of the house for work by 7 so 8am would be fine by me .
These kind of posts amuse me. Op's neighbours may not have an identical routine to yours, you know?
dementedma · 08/06/2020 22:17

8am is too early. Especially at weekends. You can mow in the shade later in the day.

Transference · 08/06/2020 22:20

I thought you were going to ask about having a drink.

Atthebottomofthegarden · 08/06/2020 22:24

Why don’t you ask your neighbours if it would bother them?!

Personally I’d get a bit stabby if you started before 9 in the week or 10 at weekends. And yes are bin lorry comes around 7.15 every Friday and I HATE THEM.

Anyway it’s irrelevant really as it certainly hasn’t been sunny here at 6pm the last few evenings. And you still haven’t said why you can’t mow it at the weekend like everyone else does.

Sweetpotatoaddict · 08/06/2020 22:24

Perfect, lawn mowing between 11am and 4pm should be banned as it completely awful timing for those on night shifts. 8am is perfect.

HforHotel · 08/06/2020 22:30

Too early. I don’t let my DC out in the garden till after 9am, as I don’t want them to disturb neighbours. A lawn mower at 8am is so disrespectful

eatsleepread · 08/06/2020 22:32

YABU.

elkiedee · 08/06/2020 22:35

8 am seems quite early to mow to me, but then I don't think we have many lawns to mow here.

On washing machines, I think it depends on where they are. I live in a mid terrace which would originally have been a small two up two down, but the washing machine is in the kitchen in an extension at the back,, and it's next to a wall which doesn't have much on the other side - if it does it's another ground floor kitchen extension. My neighbours have decided to sell up, and possibly to move out of London, but I can't see that the washing machine would have disturbed then. They've been away a few times for extended periods of time, and in one case they let the house on a short let. Before that we had a couple with a cat and we've hardly ever heard anything. Neighbours diagonally opposite who like to give parties are more annoying (gardens all back on and they leave the door open), and they seem to be doing the usual thing this summer.

jokerreturns · 08/06/2020 22:42

I think 8am on a weekday is fine

FliesandPies · 08/06/2020 22:48

Too early. 9am is the minimum, according to the law of Common Courtesy Wink
