To think 8.00am isn't too early ...

To mow the grass?

We have a very quiet electric mower. And most mornings there are delivery lorries/vans making a racket at 8 (the whole street seems to be extending their house atm, we have a builder's lorry almost every day and they always come early).

The sun is on the back garden until gone 6pm, I work until 2.30 and by the time the grass is in the shade I'm frankly knackered.

Would it really BU to give it a quick mow at 8?

Weekday fine but I would wait until 9 on a weekend.

I think it's too early at 8am on weekends but on a weekday, yes fine.

Personally in these times, I wouldn’t until 10:00am. People are struggling with the situation we are in and thus are finding it difficult to sleep at night (get to sleep, stay asleep).

I'm having trouble sleeping, but I still have to get up and get ready/have breakfast and be ready to start work at a 'reasonable' time (by which I mean office-hours time, about 8.30–9am). I hardly think everyone is sleeping in until 10am, even if we could all do with doing so.

Agree wholeheartedly with this

Too early. 9am should be earliest

It's not great but on a weekday I don't think it's the end of the world. I think it would be very rude on a weekend though.

In general the vast majority of people either have children or work so 8am is on the early side of ok. If people work shifts and sleep in the day then I don't really see how 8am is any worse than 2pm! At the weekend though many people like a lie-in so I think that would be a bit anti-social.

Feel the need to add that my 18 month old gets us up somewhere around the 5.30-6am mark so my view of what is reasonable may be a little off!

Too early, a lot of folks work shifts, I did, if on a late id stay in bed till 9.30am, or nights would be in bed, its not a few people now, its shops , factories, hospitals some offices do a late shift now a days. 8 AM is too early. personally id be a 10am but 9.30 is ok.

I'm an early riser, but I'd still hold on until 9am for something like this.

You know it's too early, that's why you want validation from us.

There's a world of difference between intermittent (necessary) services noise and someone with their lawnmower out...... it's never as quick or as quiet as you think it is.

It's a no from me.

Personally wouldn’t bother me if you did it, if I was asleep It wouldn’t waken me.

Having said that I think 9.30 - 10am would be better

It's your garden, you can do what you want 👍

I thought this once

It completely depends on your neighbours and if it would disturb them. For instance I noticed someone gets disturbed by a washing machine, I don't have a neighbour one side and it doesn't bother my other neighbour and so I can run it late at night which is perfect cause my son has sensory issues and have to wait till he's asleep to use it or when he's not in the house, same with the hoover, he's also not bothered by the blender noise for a few minutes. Have checked on everything that might disrurb him. You said it was a quiet one so I'm guessing it's just neighbours that might be effected so you might be best to ask them and demonstrate the kind of noise it makes rather than posting on mumsnet cause it depends on each individual circumstances and your neighbours circumstance and no one on here will be able to advise fully cause they don't fully no your circumstances..

It’s a bit early but round where I live the bins are collected at 7:30 am on a Sunday and the bin men are not quiet about it.
People use lawnmowers all times of the day. The man across the back cuts the grass twice a week at them moment and I swear it must only be about 1/8th of a cm growth he can cut as it’s so short already. We had neighbours out chopping up a tree at 8:30 am Saturday last week and it went on for hours and hours.
We live in an area beside a high school, busy shopping centre, main road and motorway. Even when it’s quiet it’s never really quiet. You can hear the traffic noise all day and all night. You can hear the 24 hour supermarket doing its fire drill alarms at 3am (obviously they still have to do one every so often for the night shift workers). We also have a fire station nearby so there is a decent amount of siren noise too.

So I do think it depends on where you live and what your neighbours are like. If you live in a generally quiet area then it’s probably unreasonable. If you live somewhere like I do then not really.

saw that the rest of the street are making a racket that time of the morning so why not?

But mowing the lawn doesn't really compare to the bin-men or deliveries. Or building work. The bin-men: unavoidable and gone in 10 minutes. Deliveries: unavoidable and gone in 10 minutes. Building work: unpleasant, but presumably unavoidable, and will be for a limited period weeks or days. Mowing your lawn can be done in the early evening or weekend, and choosing to make a din that early is just anti-social and unnecessary.

I wait until the weekend and won't mow until the afternoon.
I would certainly not start mowing at 8am.
My neighbour on one side is older and I know she doesn't get up until after this time.

I wouldnt be bothered at all - but I am an early bird I hate evening noise - anything after 10pm is much worse for me.

I’m up at 5.15am when I’m on early shift so it wouldn’t bother me personally then. However my husband is on night shift (we are both nhs nurses and need sleep) and he goes to his bed around 7.45am so he would well pissed off if a lawnmower was to start up at that time of the morning. Leave it until the afternoon. Also early at the weekend is also unacceptable

8am on a weekday seems ok to me, I would have thought most people are up by then. Builders start at 8am around here.

Weekends I'll start at 9am. We could well have shift workers around us, but I wouldn't know if we did. Past 9am no time during the day unreasonable. In the summer I'd do it up to 7pm.

It wouldn't bother me at all on a weekday, even though these days I'm still in bed at that time.

When I read threads like this it never fails to amaze me how angry people get at the normal day to day noise that goes hand in hand with living in close proximity to others. Obviously I'm not talking about loud music late at night or that sort of thing, which is just selfish. But hoovering, washing, lawn mowing, even building/maintenance work are all necessary things that people have to fit into their life at some stage, and it's really not possible to ensure that no one in the vicinity can hear it. And it's not possible to please everyone else, there will always be early risers and late risers, shift workers and weekday 9 to 5ers. When I hear someone mow their lawn at 8am or 9pm I don't think they're doing it because they're inconsiderate, I think they're doing it because that's the time when they can fit it round the other demands on their time.

8.30am weekday? Totally fine.
9.30 on a weekend.

But then again in the middle of Australian summer I have been known to mow my lawn at 8am cause it’s too bloody hot by 10am
