The idiots now getting rid of their “lockdown” puppies are utterly abhorrent

I’m absolutely disgusted by the number of adverts for puppies 4-6 months old that have popped up in the last few days because people have remembered they work full time.

“No fault of their own, just work commitments”

It’s blowing my mind how people can be so fucking selfish to take an 8 week old puppy, raise it for a few months to keep them entertained through lockdown and throw it aside because it’s served it’s purpose.

I knew this would happen but to actually see it is heartbreaking.

Don't worry - some of us are waiting in anticipation of scooping up one of these poor lads or lasses...

Seriously, it always breaks my heart when I see a dog on gumtree etc and the excuse for rehoming is "work". Didn't you realise this beforehand?! I suspect the true reason in most cases is that the cute puppy has turned into an unruly teenager.

I also am concerned about people over-breeding "trendy"" dogs as their prices have escalated hugely. I am sure some horrible people will be wanting a return on their £4K investment in a French bulldog/Cockapoo.

Where are these adverts popping up ?

Facebook, gumtree, freeAds, Pets4homes....

Why?

It’s heartbreaking I really hate people sometimes! So many people have been cashing in on selling pups too! The prices have been ridiculous so people have been breeding for the wrong reasons.

Unfortunately so are the more unscrupulous sorts who want them for puppy farms or as bait dogs.

Seems to be a thing awful young orange couples have done for a while, get a trendy puppy together and let it shit everywhere.

The inflation in price has been crazy, my friend had her labrador from a breeder last year for
£500. The same breeder is now selling pups for £2500.

Good grief.

I started a thread on it the other day seems to be everyday someone on FB has a new puppy, I got a bit slatted as loads of people came on to justify they had be waiting ages for a pup and it was a great time to get one etc but for unfortunately there will be idiots getting a nice wee designer pup on a whim to cheer up the kids as their holiday is cancelled this year. Animal charities already worried about it.

@sweetkitty it’s utter madness. If people slate me then they need to have a good hard look at themselves. I’m not having a go at people buying puppies now, in-fact I’d agree now is probably a great time to do the puppy stage but I’d then expect them to keep that dog until it dies, not get rid of it when they go back to work. That’s a really shitty thing to do.

This thread makes me want to cry. As dramatic as that sounds.

I know a few people that have decided to buy puppies in lockdown, even though they know full well they'll be returning to full time work in a matter of months. "Oh but it'll be alright when they're trained...."

Luckily one of the couple I know who have done this are lucky enough to afford a dog walker/doggy day care if needed. But it's so irresponsible. OP please tell me you've told the people who have posted these adverts what you've told us here? They need telling.

I got my dpuppy just before lockdown. Nightmare trying to socialise her right now. She is here to stay though...

I am shocked at how many people seem to have acquired dogs lately. I am no dog lover (cats, but allergic) but it is going to be worse than post Christmas. Sadly many people are just very selfish.

The thing is though, these puppies were already born at the start of the lockdown, so this must have been the normal number of puppies that there are. What would have happened normally, are there lots of people without dogs who would have had them? In which case they'll get them now and everything will be normal. Or would normally the excess puppies have just been killed anyway?

It may be in the future that this has encouraged breeders to breed more puppies as Varnoosh says - but none of the puppies people are getting rid of now are ones that are extra, if there's an excess it's because the whole industry is broken, not because of covid.

Just search on gumtree/pets4homes/freeAds and I promise you there will be unwanted lockdown puppies local to you, if not now in the next few weeks.

I’ve been keeping an eye on the local selling forums as my sister runs a dog rescue and she is quite rightly nervous about the situation.

I live in an area renowned for puppy farming, many of these farms exist to feed the UK market for labradoodles, cockapoos etc. I've been involved in campaigning against puppy farmers and a few months ago I joined a fb group for owners of one of these crossbreeds. It's been depressing but educational, what I realise is that they don't care where the puppies come from. Many of them argue that they need the pups for their mental health and broke lockdown to get them. Their need for these puppies supersedes everything and puppy farmers will continue to thrive for a very long time as long as we have people with these attitudes.

That's truly depressing. What's the kitten situation does anyone know?

It’s like giving away a child. Oh wait, someone did but that’s another thread! My dog is like one of our children. I could never just dump her. It’s heartbreaking. There should be more vetting going on before someone is allowed to have a dog. It doesn’t help that not many people want older dogs, which encourages puppy farming.

Oh my! It's so sad! I'm angry on these poor dogs' behalf.

Don't get me wrong, when I was furloughed, I briefly thought it would be nice to have a furry companion. Then I remembered I have a cat, and this won't be forever. Whatever four legged friend joined me would not be happy when we left the house for 8+ hours.

Some people have no foresight though, very much work in the here and now...

Yes those puppies would have been born regardless.

But they would have been bought by people who saw their life with a dog, who had factored in how much time they could spend with the dog in normal circumstances.

Unfortunately these puppies have now been bought by really narrow-sighted people who have been swept up in the moment and the novelty of being home 24/7.

Yeah it's outrageous Id been saving for a dog for a while before lockdown so had been keeping an eye out and cant believe the inflation too. People are really selfish. Its so sad for the poor dogs.

I just had a look and there are puppies for £5-£6k! This is crazy!
