The idiots now getting rid of their “lockdown” puppies are utterly abhorrent

I’m absolutely disgusted by the number of adverts for puppies 4-6 months old that have popped up in the last few days because people have remembered they work full time.

“No fault of their own, just work commitments”

It’s blowing my mind how people can be so fucking selfish to take an 8 week old puppy, raise it for a few months to keep them entertained through lockdown and throw it aside because it’s served it’s purpose.

I knew this would happen but to actually see it is heartbreaking.

@VeryQuaintIrene, I don't know in general, but anecdotally it's similar re kittens: I had to take one in last week temporarily until there was space in the local shelter

Wolfiefan · 30/05/2020 13:51

Fucking hell. 9,500 for a puppy. Not far from me. Bulldog.
No.
People aren’t exaggerating.
Prices are hiked.

dontdisturbmenow · 30/05/2020 13:52

How is it possible to properly socialise a puppy during lockdown?
Very easily since it was always permissible to walk dogs! Plenty of them in local parks!

dontdisturbmenow · 30/05/2020 13:53

Most people understand that Covid isn’t communicable on animal fur and dog lovers will love the opportunity to make a fuss of a puppy
That exactly! My boy got much fuss made over him and I now have to train him that it's not ok to go to everyone! He's too sociable!

SarahTancredi · 30/05/2020 13:54

Someone is selling a staffy (adult I think) for a quid nr me Sad

Price hiked, no doubt. But number of puppies advertised to be re-homed, I'm not convinced. Idiots buy dogs at anytime of the year.

PotholeParadise · 30/05/2020 13:56

We're also going to have more accidental litters than usual this year because vets were asked not to go routine neutering procedures. Particularly a problem in cats, but we'll also see more puppies.

Where are they going to go? Between people with reduced income who can't take on a pet, people with reduced income giving up a pet and a bigger generation of puppies and kittens from the animals that reached maturity this spring, just where are they going to go?

goose1964 · 30/05/2020 13:59

Wolfie, there was only one dog near me and that was a British bulldog £10k. Then there will be vets bills because they've been bred to have medical issues because of their looks.

Kittenlicker · 30/05/2020 14:02

But the important phase or social OMG starts before they have vaccinations and lots of vets haven’t been open...doesn’t see the best time to get one.

Kittenlicker · 30/05/2020 14:03

*socialising not OMG!

Mooey89 · 30/05/2020 14:15

We are waiting for our puppy. We’ve been on the breeders list since pre lockdown. Puppy is due to come home in 5 weeks.
I work part time and DH works full time, we work locally out and about and so can pop into the house multiple times throughout the day when we are working, and we are both going to work at least one day at home each. We also have a dog walker lined up.

We grew up with dogs and have wanted one for a long time but it hasn’t been right work wise until this year - but still people assume we are knee jerk getting a lockdown puppy and I feel the need to justify myself!
The point is for me that a dog is a lifelong commitment and needs careful consideration the same as having another baby and it is so sad to think of all the puppies who will be in rescues in 6 months 😞
The breeders in the group I’m in said it’s been absolutely crazy, they’ve all shut their books because they are just inundated.

HellloBambinos · 30/05/2020 14:16

We’d like a dog and I’ve noticed this too. I’d rather rescue than get a puppy so hopefully we can give one a good home after lockdown but it makes my blood boil reading the adverts. And the price of puppies Shock £2500 in some cases!!

Alsohuman · 30/05/2020 14:20

It can’t begin before vaccinations are complete. Our puppy came home at eight weeks. Until she had her second vaccination she went nowhere and saw nobody but us for four weeks. She’s the friendliest, most sociable little dog you’d ever meet now.
Kittenlicker · 30/05/2020 14:32

@Alsohuman I didn’t necessarily mean with other dogs (Although that’s super important and pretty sure no puppy classes were happening) but it’s important to socialise with lots of different people too, adults and children.

Ughmaybenot · 30/05/2020 14:38

I’ve genuinely just seen English bulldog puppies for £10k each. TEN THOUSAND POUNDS. Fucking bonkers.

Clymene · 30/05/2020 14:40

You shouldn't be socialising puppies before they've had vaccinations, lockdown or no lockdown @Kittenlicker

Alsohuman · 30/05/2020 14:40

I know that’s what you meant @Kittenlicker, it was covered in my post.

PotholeParadise · 30/05/2020 14:50

Have vets been doing puppy and kitten vaccinations?

Rowgtfc72 · 30/05/2020 14:53

We were just starting to look for a staffy puppy when lockdown started.
Cant find one anywhere.
Both work but opposite shifts so pup would only be alone for an hour over changeover time. We have a big dogproof garden and dd is 13.
Been 2 yrs today since we lost our 16 yr old jack and thought the time was right for another.
Guess we'll wait.

Coffeecak3 · 30/05/2020 14:56

A good breeder will not let a puppy go to two full time workers.
We got our girl 6 years ago because I worked part time and dh worked from home a lot.
Our breeder visited our home after one month to chk our pup had settled and we were honest about our situation.

Kittenlicker · 30/05/2020 14:57

@Alsohuman you are one lucky and very positive experience but I don’t think this has been the same for everyone. The couple I know, haven’t been socialising their pup or going to classes and couldn’t get it vaccinated. They also have an extremely anxious dog who won’t be left. They got it right at beginning of lockdown when everything was very strict. I’m glad you had a good experience but not always the case for all dogs and unsocialised dogs are more lightly to be rehome because they will prove to be tricky.

juneybean · 30/05/2020 15:03

We knew lockdown was coming and we seriously thought about getting a puppy (wife doesn't work so wasnt an issue about leaving after lockdown) and had wanted another pup for a while but we decided against it and now they're going for ridiculous prices!

Alsohuman · 30/05/2020 15:05

I don’t think we were lucky. We were both at home all day (old) and she was played with a lot when she was awake, ie about four hours a day. I completely agree about leaving them alone but we wouldn’t have taken her on when we were both working. My husband’s Scottish terrier went to work with him.

Kittenlicker · 30/05/2020 15:09

Whatever you think or not think, it is definitely a problem (or will be). I work closely with rescue centres and they have been primed for this happening, there will undoubtedly an influx of unsocialised/problem dogs. You are supposed to try and give your puppy all sorts of experiences when they are little to prevent (hopefully) anxieties and stresses rearing their nasty head later on. Some breeds aren’t as prone to this but sadly many are. I’m happy to keep debating it but I have to go walk my dog.

Doesn't help when the dogs come from puppy farms. The one near us churns our cross breed puppies who are nervous wrecks. I know where they are from before I'm told as they are all scared of the world Angry
