The idiots now getting rid of their “lockdown” puppies are utterly abhorrent

I’m absolutely disgusted by the number of adverts for puppies 4-6 months old that have popped up in the last few days because people have remembered they work full time.

“No fault of their own, just work commitments”

It’s blowing my mind how people can be so fucking selfish to take an 8 week old puppy, raise it for a few months to keep them entertained through lockdown and throw it aside because it’s served it’s purpose.

I knew this would happen but to actually see it is heartbreaking.

Yanbu
Dogs and cats.
Those rescues that are open are absolutely inundated with applications. Those applicants are then getting pissed off because they are being asked to consider what they'll do on their return to work.
Waiting now for the influx of adolescents...

Alsohuman · 28/05/2020 21:03

@Crossfitwidow

The inflation in price has been crazy, my friend had her labrador from a breeder last year for £500. The same breeder is now selling pups for £2500.
Same here. We bought our JRT for £365 last year, puppies are being advertised for £1500 now.

I feel so sorry for those poor little dogs.

Mummyoflittledragon · 28/05/2020 21:03

Omg. Horrible people. Sad

At least labs are easy to train and good family dogs. The Labrador Rescue Trust is very helpful for rehoming dogs when the wheels fall off. My dog is now six, and I would consider a rescue as long as it was under seven months old. But I share the anger for anyone who's had a dog as a diversion for the children during lockdown.
Kittenlicker · 28/05/2020 21:06

Worse is that fact these puppies could not be socialised at a crucial stage in their lives, which will lead to anxious, badly trained, reactive dogs that no one will want to rehome because of their issues.

Dumbie · 28/05/2020 21:06

@VeryQuaintIrene bad, worse than usual. It will be a lot worse in a few weeks I think.
Vets haven't been neutering, so it will be bad in about a month I reckon
No shortage of people wanting kittens but my rescue are very very cautious on who they are allowing to adopt

lazyarse123 · 28/05/2020 21:06

My dd got a dog for my ds who lives alone and he has a few issues so doesn't work but is perfectly capable of caring for the dog. They found her on gumtree and the advert was as previously stated "need to rehome due to work" she was about 2year old. These people also had a husky and my dd asked if they were also rehoming that one and they said no because she could be left all day. Very odd. We think they wanted rid of the staffy because she is very clingy and will not be ignored, perfect for son. Some people shouldn't be allowed animals.

backinaminute · 28/05/2020 21:10

We've been planning on a dog for a long time. Dc are 7 and 9 so good ages, know which breed we want and how we would manage leaving them, dog day care/walker etc. We'd agreed that we would wait until we moved house, and we were about to put our house on the market just before lockdown.

We've decided to hold off moving until we know what will happen house/recession wise so now is as good a time as any. I rang the kennel club's puppy coordinator to start to put the feelers out about potential breeders etc. She told me she is getting 10/15 calls a day from people after puppies!! We've shelved our plans for now, I'm so sad that people are doing this on a whim. It's a shame, as we are so ready to get a dog and the flexibility now means that we are around more to settle them but my DP works part time anyway.

My puppy lady said that she thought the rescues would be full in 3/4 months time and it sounds like it's happening already. How sad.

Muffinbutton · 28/05/2020 21:10

I'm look for a puppy (I lost my lovely boy in Dec so not a lockdown buy!). I've seen lots of rehoming adverts. I'm sure some are genuine, but others I think are just to cash in on the inflated prices.
I've seen people that have had a 'change of circumstances' with a 9/10 week old puppy. Seriously!

The sad thing is that people will pay the inflated prices amid their desperation to get a puppy.

I also saw a Facebook post earlier about someone who met the breeder in Asda carpark. A few days later and puppy is at the vets seriously ill. Very sad situation that people can fall into that trap.

HeyBlaby · 28/05/2020 21:10

When you couple this with a massive economic recession, animal shelters are going to be packed to the rafters, whilst also struggling along on reduced donations.

It happened with horses during the last recession, value of them plummeted as less people buying, horses neglected and abandoned left, right and centre.

Muffinbutton · 28/05/2020 21:14

I think they'll also be an issue with dog walkers/ doggy day care. A lot of people justify their puppy with 'when I go back to work....' but how many places actually have capacity to take on new dogs?

thereinmadnesslies · 28/05/2020 21:16

We were planning a second dog pre-lockdown - our dog is 2.5yrs so it seemed a good point to get him a friend. We are set up for a dog with part time work and we use daycare for our first dog. The prices are madness just now, and I can’t bring myself to pay 3x the price. It would be a really good time for us as well, we both know that we are at home until at least sept.
Has anyone previously rehomed a puppy at around 6 - 12 months - I’m not sure if a puppy would be messed up by 3 homes in less than a year?

HeatherIV · 28/05/2020 21:20

I thought this might be an exaggeration but I found 5 just in my local area on pets 4 homes. All designer breeds, all young, all state haven't got the time for them. All still want a lot of money for a second hand dog.

When we got our dog we saw "2nd hand" puppies going for less but figured not worth the risk. They may be getting rid because the dog is a knighmare. I doubt I'm the only one that thinks like that. Many of these puppies will end up in rescue centres and if still unwanted, possibly put down.

1forsorrow · 28/05/2020 21:26

Just had a look on Gumtree, can't believe the prices!

frumpety · 28/05/2020 21:26

@Crossfitwidow It was a genuine question as I am looking to rehome a dog and haven't seen loads of ads for lockdown puppies ( yet !) maybe geographical ? Love puppies but don't want one Smile

MrsBobDylan · 28/05/2020 21:35

The people selling on their young dog are callous idiots.

Dogs are expensive - food, insurance, vets, flea treatment. If you work then dog walkers and doggy daycare is expensive. If you go abroad for 2 weeks every summer, kennels will push your holiday costs up by 100s.

I am also incandescent at those breeding pugs who can't fucking breathe. Their noses aren't just flat, they recess into their face by a cm ffs. Cruelty beyond belief.

Bastards.

frumpety · 28/05/2020 21:39

Sorry rehome as in offer a dog a home as opposed to give up a dog Smile

Casschops · 28/05/2020 21:42

We are waiting patiently for the trend to die down to offer a four legged friend a permanent home. People are horrible and selfish we had our last dogs till they were 19 and 17. ADOPT DON'T SHOP.

JacobReesMogadishu · 28/05/2020 21:45

Cavapoo type puppies are going for over 3k now! Crazy!

Crossfitwidow · 28/05/2020 21:45

I really wish I was exaggerating the situation but I just feel like every other Facebook post has been a picture of a new puppy or breeders saying they can’t add any more names to the waiting lists. I’d suggest anyone thinking of getting a puppy should hold off a few weeks and give a forever home to a lockdown puppy.

ThighThighofthigh · 28/05/2020 21:51

I can slightly understand (not condone) people realising fairly early on that they have made a mistake and are not suitable dog owners. But I really can't understand how people can SELL their 2, 4, 6 year old dog. I look at my 10 and 5 year old Jacks and I know that they just wouldn't settle. The 10 year old especially would completely ignore a new owner.

I knew this would happen after lockdown, people who don't give a shit about animals make me sick.

IHateCoronavirus · 28/05/2020 21:52

I thought they had recently changed the law on selling puppies to help get away from puppy farming or did I get it wrong?

IHateCoronavirus · 28/05/2020 21:53

I’d love, love, love a dog so much. But our lifestyle just wouldn’t be fair. So I just have to squeal at everyone else’s

Crossfitwidow · 28/05/2020 21:58

Reading between the lines with some of the older dogs being sold it seems like lockdown has made some couples realise they really don’t like each other very much, thus forcing them to move apart and re-home their pets (seems to be mostly French Bulldogs).

OP posts:
ThighThighofthigh · 28/05/2020 22:11

Why are they selling their family dogs though, why not rehome them through a rescue or with friends and family? Because they want cash and don't give a shit. They should sell their kids while they're at it.
