The idiots now getting rid of their “lockdown” puppies are utterly abhorrent

I’m absolutely disgusted by the number of adverts for puppies 4-6 months old that have popped up in the last few days because people have remembered they work full time.

“No fault of their own, just work commitments”

It’s blowing my mind how people can be so fucking selfish to take an 8 week old puppy, raise it for a few months to keep them entertained through lockdown and throw it aside because it’s served it’s purpose.

I knew this would happen but to actually see it is heartbreaking.

I’ve took in a ‘lockdown puppy’. My stepdads nephew got one, now has to go back to work and his gf can’t cope with the puppy and the babyHmm. So we adopted her. She’s amazing.

Aria20 · 30/05/2020 17:03

The cost of puppies is ridiculous at the moment. We've been talking about getting a puppy for the last 2 years so keep my eye out and the prices have tripled if not more! If it weren't for the lack of socialisation opportunities and training classes during lockdown this would have been an ideal time for us to finally get one... I am at home all the time anyway bar school runs so returning to work is not an issue for me but it would have been a bonus to have my husband at home for a couple of months to help settle a pup in and train them. However, I'm not prepared to risk getting one from a puppy farm who is trying to cash in on the situation with their crazy prices! I've looked into rescues but because our children are under 12 they won't consider us.

Wolfiefan · 30/05/2020 18:14

@Aria20 some will. Smaller rescues who foster dogs not put them in kennels for instance.

dontdisturbmenow · 30/05/2020 18:28

You shouldn't be socialising puppies before they've had vaccinations
Of course you can. We took our boy out twice a day in a pouch from 8 weeks. He got to meet other dogs if from high up, people, cows, sheep, horses, squirrels. By the time he had his second injection, and able to walk, he recognised the local park and the dogs. He loved playing with them right away and is very sociable.

Dieu · 30/05/2020 18:48

They're fuckwits of the highest order. Shame Covid didn't think similarly ...

Busybusybust · 31/05/2020 11:54

My daughter has a puppy which she collected during lockdown. But this was a long planned for pup. He had already been chosen by the time lockdown started. Long discussions as to whether they should still take him. Decided to in the end. He now lives the life of Reilly - except for one thing - it’s not possible to socialise him with other dogs.

I am appalled that people think so little of dogs that they can throw them away like an old tee shirt.

Clymene · 31/05/2020 11:54

I meant with other dogs. Obviously

Kittenlicker · 02/06/2020 13:35

It’s started already. Just seen this:

EvilPea · 02/06/2020 13:42

The separation anxiety in some of these puppies is going to be huge.
Having family there 24/7 then nothing.
It’s going to be hard for dogs used to it, let alone new ones

justasking111 · 02/06/2020 13:47

Vets in my area are doing innoculations so as a responsible dog owner she should have found one.

B1rdbra1n · 02/06/2020 13:53

These eye-wateringly expensive dogs are just a way of advertising your wealth:(

janet1267 · 02/06/2020 14:26

We've been thinking about getting a dog for a while (the complete opposite of an impulse purchase!). After looking at this thread I've been looking at ads in my local area - some crossbreed puppies being sold at prices between £2,500 up to £4,800. I'm truly shocked. I can't afford to pay that much, and wouldn't anyway. These are not from KC breeders.
I'll probably have to put my decision on hold for now, although I'd be happy to take an unwanted dog for a smaller fee. Or a rescue dog if I could get one.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 02/06/2020 15:36

There is one two posts above, janet.

This is heartbreaking. Those poor pups.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 02/06/2020 15:38

Sorry, that was just me being Shock at the irresponsive person in that ad. Didn't want to put anyone on the spot.

EmeraldShamrock · 02/06/2020 15:44

My cousin runs a rescue centre she works fulltime too, she refused to allow any adoptions during the pandemic. She said she couldn't carry out house checks, she also new many will adopt out of boredom.

HellloBambinos · 02/06/2020 15:45

@Kittenlicker that is fucking awful. Are people seriously that short sighted and dense? Honestly that’s made me fume. Poor pup.

Kittenlicker · 02/06/2020 16:39

@justasking111 they may be now but they weren’t allowed to in the early days of lockdown.

PotholeParadise · 02/06/2020 16:44

If people aren't capable of foreseeing that they're going to be going back to work eventually, and this will interfere with having a dog, how the hell do they even manage to hold down a job?!

dontdisturbmenow · 02/06/2020 16:50

That makes no sense as this is the case for any working person adopting a dog. If anything, these dogs will have had longer to adapt to their environment so it's actually getter than if they'd only had 1 week or 2 if little puppies.

My cousin runs a rescue centre she works fulltime too, she refused to allow any adoptions during the pandemic
I think it is sad that she's just made assumptions that anyone interested was a poor candidate for adoption.

Visits could have been carried out via zoom. How many dogs will lose out on adoption with very good parents because of such a general assumption.

Our boy couldn't be luckier. He does have the life of Riley. It's sad to think that he and we could have missed out because of owners assuming we were bound to be crap parents for wanting to adopt now.

MaccaPacca81 · 02/06/2020 16:51

I knew this was going to happen...disgusting behaviour!

Kittenlicker · 02/06/2020 17:32

I think that rescue was extremely sensible, ours has done the same thing. The animals will still be there to be adopted after lockdown hopefully to folks just not looking for a dog ‘on a whim’.

ImInYourMindFuzz · 02/06/2020 17:42

We got a dog during lockdown. But we had the dog picked out during rescue. All placements stopped during lockdown, and only a few weeks ago we we're able to get him as the charity had confirmation it could start rehoming due to the increased need to take in more dogs. We fully know the commitment we have, we have money set aside for day care when we start back at work and had planned to do this all along.
We work on separation anxiety slowly anyway as planned, and we can socialise him in our local park, he's met a few dogs now and even showed interest in playing with them this morning, massive difference to 3 weeks ago when he could barely walk on the opposite side of the road to another dog without stopping / staring / becoming submissive.

ElsieMc · 02/06/2020 18:12

I have two working cocker spaniels that were rehomes who came to me four years ago. The owner rehomed due to work commitments but she had divorced and had to go back full time. They are certainly not a breed to leave alone all day so I do think she did the right thing for the dogs and had turned down another couple before us. I have never regretted getting them, they are huge fun but hard work. I sometimes think people expect dogs to act like people and whilst ours try their best, they have accidents, do ludicrous things, eat everyone's slippers, tea towels etc and take a dump in the middle of the lawn. Its really hard work getting a puppy and I think people underestimate the work involved.

I have noticed ludicrous prices for working cockers on Preloved. Things like £2,500 and they are a fairly common breed. I paid £500 for two.

This idiot was on my local gumtree. I despair.

littledaisy85 · 02/02/2021 15:17

A dog is for life, not just for lockdown. I think everyone should really think long and hard before making this long-term commitment.

I was chatting with a friend the other day and she told me about the shocking boom to bust story of Tibetan mastiffs in China which resulted in catastrophic numbers of homeless dogs. I would encourage everyone to read this cautionary tale before taking in a lockdown puppy.
