The idiots now getting rid of their “lockdown” puppies are utterly abhorrent

I’m absolutely disgusted by the number of adverts for puppies 4-6 months old that have popped up in the last few days because people have remembered they work full time.

“No fault of their own, just work commitments”

It’s blowing my mind how people can be so fucking selfish to take an 8 week old puppy, raise it for a few months to keep them entertained through lockdown and throw it aside because it’s served it’s purpose.

I knew this would happen but to actually see it is heartbreaking.

I'm not sure the dogs would have gone to better owners anyway. The decent breeders that I know of have a waiting list and wouldn't have pups readily available for these people who made a snap decision to buy.

LegallyBrunet · 28/05/2020 23:19

A friend has been fostering a dog during lockdown whilst she’s been furloughed. She’s been asked by the rescue if they can keep her on their books as a foster owner once the current foster dog has been adopted as they are expecting an influx of rescues

earthyfire · 28/05/2020 23:56

That's shocking. I have been looking to buy a pup for the last two years and I noticed that the price of puppies have almost doubled during the lockdown.

Poppinjay · 28/05/2020 23:56

@thereinmadnesslies

We were planning a second dog pre-lockdown - our dog is 2.5yrs so it seemed a good point to get him a friend. We are set up for a dog with part time work and we use daycare for our first dog. The prices are madness just now, and I can’t bring myself to pay 3x the price. It would be a really good time for us as well, we both know that we are at home until at least sept. Has anyone previously rehomed a puppy at around 6 - 12 months - I’m not sure if a puppy would be messed up by 3 homes in less than a year?
We have four dogs, all of whom had three homes in their first year or 18 months and all of them are wonderful and absolutely not messed up in any way. It takes time for them to settle but it's two months since the latest arrival and she's nearly there.

I think recall has been harder to establish than it would be if you had one from a tiny puppy but, other than that, I can't see any issues although, TBH, the last puppy I had was 35 years ago so I may be wrong about the recall.

saveeno · 29/05/2020 00:21

To the dog lovers out there, I hope your pups are silent and do not and never will disturb your neighbours.

I suffered endless noise, and I was very annoyed with it. The owners of these barking noisy dogs/puppies never cared about those around them.

Anyway, just speaking from experience.

Timinfuckingruislip · 29/05/2020 00:24

@saveeno thanks for a totally relevant post Hmm

saveeno · 29/05/2020 00:32

Ah you are welcome Timinfuckingruislip. My point still stands.

Have a dog or two or three, but think of those next door too when they bark forever. The owner/master never seems to hear it do they?

DamnYankee · 29/05/2020 00:35

And I've been holding off on getting a dog because our yard is large, but xeriscaped (lots of rocks, poky plants). Sad

So despicable...

Forever?

JohnRokesmith · 29/05/2020 00:48

Haven't read the full thread, so not sure if this has been mentioned yet; There are a lot of scammers out there purportedly selling puppies. It's a global scam popping up in a lot of places. The puppies aren't real; you are asked to deposit the money to get the puppy.

Avelosa · 29/05/2020 02:41

@thereinmadnesslies we rescued one of ours at 7 months old (won’t say what breed as mumsnet HATES themGrin). He’d had 4 homes already from people thinking they wanted this breed and then not being able to cope. He’s very nervous and always looks extremely concerned that he’s done something wrong, so we think he may have been abused in one of the homes. But apart from that he’s fine and it doesn’t seem to have affected him

thereinmadnesslies · 29/05/2020 17:40

@avelosa thank you that’s helpful. Our current dog is nervous and we’ve worked with a behaviourist so it’s good to know its workable.

Truthpact · 29/05/2020 18:15

I am sure some horrible people will be wanting a return on their £4K investment in a French bulldog/Cockapoo.

A fool and their money are easily parted..

EmbarrassedUser · 29/05/2020 18:30

My DS saw a German Shepard puppy for £2.5k the other day! I know nothing about dogs and their prices but even I know that’s ridiculous (I hope!!)

What state are these poor things going to be in?

Are they vaccinated or chipped ? Have they been socialised and if so how? What is their health status as surely so many people struggled financially on no work/waiting for the self employment package or on 80 percent of their wages.

How are they actually going to end up anywhere they will be properly taken care of? AngrySad

CayrolBaaaskin · 29/05/2020 18:48

I’ve been looking for a dog for ages but there is so little available around here on Gumtree/pets at home/ etc hence the high prices.uou have to respond to an ad in an hour or under or the dogs are gone. No lockdown puppies available here op - I’m sure you will be pleased at that.

We were turned down for a rescue dog (young kids) but I did finally get a pup that I’m due to pick up soon. I responded to the ad within 5 minutes tho or I wouldn’t have got him.

After this thread, I looked at my local. A 6 month old American bull dog x going for 2k, excuse, he needs more attention.

I was shocked at how many dogs there were and only two or three were neutered.

IrmaFayLear · 30/05/2020 12:25

I just had a look a Gumtree and there was a litter of golden retrievers for £3k each! They were described as "teddy bears" and it said nowt about their origins.

Does anyone think the prices will calm down when things (hopefully) return to normal? At the moment the prices for puppies have, in some cases, quadrupled.

RozHuntleysStump · 30/05/2020 12:35

Dogs are so expensive. None in my area under 1k and I live in a really poor and shit city. My own dog was £450 and I thought that was expensive but cheap compared to others. I wish I could take a rescue dog but I would just be taking more on than I can cope with.

Someone round here dumped a german shepherd at the side of the road and drove off laughing. I am so upset about it.

Alsohuman · 30/05/2020 12:39

Prices will drop again once all the dogs bought for lockdown start hitting the shelters as people return to work. Poor little buggers, they’ll be well bonded and very distressed when they’re turfed out.

dontdisturbmenow · 30/05/2020 13:24

I bought my boy during early during the lockdown. It was indeed the perfect time and I'm so grateful we had this chance. My boy is going nowhere, I'd rather quit my job than giving him away! Thankfully, we had made plans before!

However, I've continued to look at ads on pets4homes and gumtree for his breed every day since and I've only seen two such ads, and both times it wasn't for work reasons and the dogs although young were older so not bought during lockdown.

I'm questioning whether this thread is exagerating the true picture to make a point.

Kittenlicker · 30/05/2020 13:30

How is it possible to properly socialise a puppy during lockdown? Plus would be so worried about separation anxiety too. My friend got a collie recently and they can’t leave it for a minute.

Easy. If it’s vaccinated you take it for walks and allow it to interact with other dogs. Most people understand that Covid isn’t communicable on animal fur and dog lovers will love the opportunity to make a fuss of a puppy.
