So another killing of a black man Ahmaud Arbery by 2 white men (Father and son) in US. They nearly got away with it calling it a citizen arrest and self defence. Father was a retired policeman.

They followed him, armed with guns and shot him.

Prosecutors tried to cover it up until the video emerged.
Ahmaud’s crime? He was going for a jog.

I'm appalled that over 1/3 of the poll responders think the OP is being unreasonable. Some of the responses on here are unbelievable.

OP YANBU. As others have said, the institutional and cultural racism in the US, especially the Southern States, is what underpins this horrendous murder but also the non-prosecution of the protagonists. It is not coincidental that the elder man was an ex-cop.

@hollybon1 got some examples of the white people killed in racist murders by black police, or covered up by police departments?

? All slaves are humans, it’s in the definition of a slave.
However, you can be human AND stolen, but not a slave. Eg. Press ganged into the Navy, kidnapped and held for ransom, etc. Your “correction” is no correction at all. It erases the fact that these Africans were slaves, their suffering exceeded that of being merely a stolen human.

Perhaps those justifying the retired police officers actions need to watch this. How anyone can say this isn’t race related is beyond me. It’s only now that the men have been charged with murder. I’m bringing my son up so that he is not racist. He was absolutely horrified when at school they were taught about racism at school, because the idea of any of his classmates being racist was so abhorrent.

However, we suffer from White Privilege and although I’d welcome anyone to correct me, I don’t think our outrage from the UK is going to make much difference to racism victims in America.

I think every voice that is raised to say 'that is not okay, that is unacceptable, we will not accept that' makes a difference. We live, even in Pandemic Earth, in a global world.

I find it amazing and at the same time not that nobody has responded to my posts about how awful America is. Because there really is no counter argument. Also in other threads I've tried to highlight the amazing work Senegal has been doing in this covid fight. It will never be reported in white media because they want to push the narrative that we are savages who will be annihalated by covid..

Being black/mixed/non white in England is no joke either. When we start doing up "OMG look at how bad it is over there" the rampant racism on our very own doorstep is minimised and we end up with the type of shit that's happening on this and many other posts on MN re race.

Racism is seen as minimal in places outside of the US because black people aren't violently lynched or executed the way they are in USA. While this is true, the UK is still extremely racist.

I've got stories for DAYS on racism here & while I lived in Denmark. Stories from this year even.

My dads (1/2 eng
1/2 danish) family are racist but they don't see themselves as such, lol. Embarrassingly enough, my dad has made some iffy comments while claiming he can't be racist "cos my wife & kids are black"... you wouldn't believe how many of my cousins and friends have similar situations within their families.

People in the work place get very comfortable with the fact I have 1 white parent and if you hear some of the shit they say, often without even giving it a 2nd thought. All of it reported to HR and even then it's still not always taken seriously...

"I'm just going to the [Insert racist word here] shop do you want anything" is just 1 example before anyone reads this thinking that I'm probably being a sensitive snowflake (ugh)

I live in the UK and I don't think the racism here is anywhere near the same scale as in the USA.

Depends on what parts you go and live in in the US and U.K. ..

In my experience, it is more overt in the US and I have been lucky enough not to have a lot of experiences of racism despite growing up there. In the U.K., it has been more covert and I find that harder to deal with because too many people assume if you say it in a nice, polite manner or without being angry or blatant it isn’t the same or it’s less racist. It’s not... not by a long shot.

They murdered him in FEBRUARY and were only arrested YESTERDAY! The DA blocked their arrest, she's white too, they were friends of hers and the father had at some point worked with her.

The guy that filmed it is also going to be arrested it seems. He's friends with them. I'm guessing they set it up to be filmed.

This was a premeditated, cold blooded murder. Filmed. No one can argue that.

This beautiful young man had his whole life ahead of him, only to have it snuffed out by two thick,revolting ,racist losers, that escaped justice for MONTHS!

They should be sentenced to death for this. I really hope they are.
