Clapping for the NHS

This makes me cringe. The U.K. shrugged its shoulders and voted for a government which they knew decimated the NHS a few months ago.

And now people are standing on their doorsteps clapping. I think it's beyond insulting. I know we didn't all vote conservative but how patronising when NHS staff are putting their lives at risk.

Last week almost everyone was out on my street, tonight there was hardly anybody.

Saving my applause now for when this horrendous time is over, not going to be anytime soon.

Badtasteflump · 02/04/2020 20:07

I didn't clap last week. This week my DC had heard about it and wanted to join in, dragging me out with them. But actually it felt really nice. Most of my street were in their front gardens clapping and it was lovely ☺

NemophilistRebel · 02/04/2020 20:07

It was as big if not bigger here

Air horns
Banging saucepans
Blowing whistles
And all the bloody fireworks

Wolfiefan · 02/04/2020 20:07

We didn’t have any last week but we did this week.
The same people who post “share if you hate cancer” shite on FB. #bekind and it’s all about how wonderful they are.

Stet · 02/04/2020 20:09

Lots doing it here, with a piper playing too. Was nice actually and I'm as cynical as they come.

voiceofsanitary · 02/04/2020 20:10

The same people who post “share if you hate cancer” shite on FB

YES! And if you don't share it, it means you fuckin love cancer, obvs.... Grin

islandislandisland · 02/04/2020 20:10

@NemophilistRebel fireworks here too, cat is shitting herself. Pretty sure no one working at the local hospital can hear them from there either Hmm

MadameBee · 02/04/2020 20:10

Omg - there are lots of things that can wake and disturb NHS workers and their babies.

Wolfiefan · 02/04/2020 20:11

Of course @voiceofsanitary don’t most people fucking love it.
Or it’s to raise awareness. As if nobody has heard of cancer or dementia or whatever it is.
Virtue signalling bollocks.

PerditaMacleod · 02/04/2020 20:11

The arseholes in my street are setting off fireworks too and woke the baby Angry

I find the whole thing horribly cringe.

voiceofsanitary · 02/04/2020 20:11

Omg - there are lots of things that can wake and disturb NHS workers and their babies

Most of them aren't completely unnecessary virtue signalling bollocks though, are they?

squid4 · 02/04/2020 20:11

I’m an a&e doctor and I really appreciated it just now, really kind
but no one around here votes Tory I’d be furious to hear Tory voters applauding
Take it to the ballot instead , please

Samcro · 02/04/2020 20:14

It was really noisy round here, have to say i have bee on the not clapping side, but was really nice to see and hear people after it being so quiet.
So even if its an empty gesture, it made me smile, and i bet a lot other people too.

sleepingpup · 02/04/2020 20:14

They're doing fuck all except banging their hands together though.

Yes that's the 'clapping'

Everyone out here and you could hear it from streets away. Nice to see the neighbours. All done now. pleased to have been part of it.

NemophilistRebel · 02/04/2020 20:15

@islandislandisland oh shit the cat! I forgot he’s outside. Hope he comes back in soon and isn’t too shaken up

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 02/04/2020 20:16

Just clapping this time. Fizzled out quick though. Now people posting next time they'll bang pots and let off fireworks..just clap!

CoolCarrie · 02/04/2020 20:19

I am a total cynic but watching it on tv in South Africa I found it quite moving. My dh is a doctor and he thinks it’s a good thing.

NemophilistRebel · 02/04/2020 20:20

Well if doctors like it let’s just keep this going

Let’s do a Friday for the workers of supermarkets

Saturday for delivery drivers

Sunday for the bin collectors

Monday for the teachers

Etc etc

BrooHaHa · 02/04/2020 20:21

I was told today's was for retail workers.

sleepingpup · 02/04/2020 20:22

Just don't worry about it @NemophilistRebel .

Stay inside and turn the volume up.

NemophilistRebel · 02/04/2020 20:22

Thanks for the suggestion Grin

Stet · 02/04/2020 20:23

If you don't like it, just turn up the TV and stay inside surely? We forgot about it last week and didn't notice as we had the TV on and were chatting. It's not exactly two hours of pounding noise.

NemophilistRebel · 02/04/2020 20:23

Unfortunately not broohaha.
It would be nice if others were considered but all online is just saying thanks to NHS

NemophilistRebel · 02/04/2020 20:23

As the other thread went - the NHS workers would rather get thanked in fair wage increases and PPE and better conditions

Lex234 · 02/04/2020 20:24

I'm a nurse in social care, I am in awe of NHS staff and don't mind the clapping-none of us covered "Global Pandemic" during training and it must be bloody hard work at the furnace, so to speak.

I don't like it when the people clapping are the same ones completely disregarding lockdown, social distancing etc. I am looking at you, next door neighbour.
