Clapping for the NHS

Moomin8 · 02/04/2020 09:32

This makes me cringe. The U.K. shrugged its shoulders and voted for a government which they knew decimated the NHS a few months ago.

And now people are standing on their doorsteps clapping. I think it's beyond insulting. I know we didn't all vote conservative but how patronising when NHS staff are putting their lives at risk.

If you want to change the vote next time around, engage others in an intelligent debate, don't just throw insults.

Well personally for me politics isn't about debating - it affects real peoples lives. If people only care about themselves there isn't anything I can do about it. That's on them.

I think this elevation of NHS staff (and there are many thousands NOT in the front line) to the status of Gods is somewhat dangerous and I am getting tired of having it rammed down my throat. A close friend of mine was verbally assaulted in the streeet by her neighbour last week - a nurse - for looking after her two grandchildren while her daughter went for a midwife appointment; she was sceamed and shouted at to the point that she is now afraid to leave her house - she is 56 with no underlying conditions. There are as many unpleasant folk inside the NHS as there are out and besides that these people are doing the job that they chose to do and are paid to do. Why be a nurse or a doctor if you don't want to come into contact with sick and infectious people? Why are our armed forces not shown the same appreciation when they are fighting battles that keep us all safe and free? Their suffering becomes invisible

@Moomin8 it's not on them though, it's on wider society.

A lot of people give a great deal of thought to their vote beyond the campaign slogans. Discussion and debate is a massive part of that. Perhaps you are one of the enlightened. Go forth and enlighten people.

Moomin8 · 03/04/2020 12:07

@CHIRIBAYA

yes this is another problem where people all turn on each other. Competitive isolation I believe. Suddenly everyone can judge why someone else is out.

A lot do but a lot don't. Many people don't read the manifestos.

@Moomin8 all the more reason to debate and discuss rather than throw your hands in the air and throw insults.

Every vote counts!

notchickenagain · 03/04/2020 12:21

What a horrible post CHIRIBAYA. Elevated to gods? They know what they're letting themselves in for? You sound like an attention-seeker who realises it not all about you for once.

Moomin8 · 03/04/2020 12:25

I'm not throwing insults. I'm merely pointing out the hypocrisy of a collective narrative which says 'sod the NHS and public services because Brexit needs to get done' then suddenly its 'lets all be thankful for the NHS'

People were terrified of Jeremy Corbyn and his communist regime but ironically what we have at this moment is more Big State than anyone would ever have predicted. And after this is all over there are going to be many more people who are dependent on the state and things will never completely be rolled back to how they were.

Iorderedyouapancake · 03/04/2020 12:42

@LagunaBubbles a majority of people in England didn’t vote conservative either

derxa · 03/04/2020 12:49

People were terrified of Jeremy Corbyn and his communist regime Thankfully Labour will have a new leader very soon. Keir Starmer hopefully.

koshkatt · 03/04/2020 12:57

So more of the same then...he hasn't got the balls to kick out Momentum and have his Neil Kinnock moment. I wish he did though.

sleepingpup · 03/04/2020 13:45

I'm not throwing insults

you totally are.

most people can't see past the end of their noses
they're hypocrites
they're gullible
they don't do anything useful
they're not willing to put themselves out
they have short memories
the tory working class are the worst

and all judged on whether they clap or not. Hmm

you have a very political agenda to all this, fine. But why this judgemental shite.

sleepingpup · 03/04/2020 13:48

Competitive isolation I believe. Suddenly everyone can judge why someone else is out.

the irony of you saying this?

I've been delivering parcels all day, the amount of people who didn't thank me! Three in a row on one street. I bet the ignorant sods were out last night clapping their little hearts out.
I always thank everyone when they offer me a service I don't need to put on a show to my neighours.

noworklifebalance · 04/04/2020 08:04

That article entirely misses the point of the clapping.

CalmerViolet · 04/04/2020 18:19

Yes, the Spiked article, sour mouthed as ever, misses the point.

Stupid people are stupid, whether they clap or not.

Plenty of people who clap will be:
Grateful to individual workers and wanting via a simple gesture to say ‘what you food appreciated: thank you’
Thankful that we have free at point of delivery healthcare available to all
Suspicious of it’s safety in the hands of a R Wing Gvt
Critical of aspects of management of the NHS.

And still want to clap for our NHS.

Because actually many people clapping are not as stupid as the Spiked writer seems to think.

CalmerViolet · 04/04/2020 18:20

‘Do is’ not ‘food’

crosstalk · 04/04/2020 22:18

We're not clapping for whatever government. We're clapping for all frontline workers. Whether it's the guys (mostly) still removing our bins, hospital cleaners, porters, scientists doing checks, supermarket workers and the drivers/sorters supplying us, people staffing chemists, the poor sodding care staff and care home workers, the doctors and nurses. Sorry to anyone I've left out.

We are not clapping the government which needs to get its act together, nor PHE which seems to have fallen down badly.

nicknamehelp · 04/04/2020 22:22

nurses I know think its a lovely gesture

Elara2 · 11/04/2020 02:44

In Spain clapping was a spontaneous one off event. 😊 Here it is just wrong because.....

1.TRUE GRATITUDE IS SPONTANEOUS NOT TIMETABLED 😘

  1. CLAPPING GATHERINGS BREAK RULES "no more than 2 gathering & more than 2m apart"- Police are gathering in big groups less than 2m apart👥👥👥👥👥👥👥👥

3.Nhs clapping themselves looks like a display of self gratification. Who is caring for the patients while they do this? To family working in nhs etc this timetabled events just wrong.

  1. HUGE CLAPPING GATHERINGS ALLOWED BUT PUBLIC NOT ALLOWED IN LARGE OPEN PARKS GARDENS COUNTRYSIDE FOR FRESH AIR & EXERCISE!!!
Obvs easy for public to be 2m apart.. easily a mile apart!! Constantly on news 3or4 police terrify (dunt help our mental health) 1or2 people trying to have little fresh air in isolated location parks/beach/countryside, there are often more police than public! The rules say we can go out daily, most like me are so scared in this DYSTOPIAN police state likened to 1984 big brother😳 that i go out less than each week & as a result am in pain as muscles arent getting used so i now limp (disability worse if dont do gentle walk).

ANSWERS
TEST TRACE test trace to save lives.
My sister (hosp chaplain/nurse now has covid19 & her hubby does) says we should have been testing.

EXTENSIVE TESTING like in s korea works & is cheaper to the economy than a lockdown.

BIBLE IS SO RIGHT WHEN IT STATES LIVE BY EXAMPLE eg social distancing.

NEED PROTECTIVE GEAR & TESTING not clapping. Clapping dunt protect from covid19. Clapping in groups spreads it.

BIBLE SAYS SEEK TO DO GOOD IN SECRET with no desire for a reward. (Then God will reward you). (Bible says DONT publically say how good you are in hope you receive praise publically... if you do, youve had your reward.

CLOSE BORDER Note uk border is open i know of people who walked in no checks, not even tested. Singapore Hongkong near China did this, only 4 deaths!!!

USE OPEN SPACES FOR FRESH AIR, EXERCISE & MENTAL WELLBEING & police deal with crime not ppl having isolated exercise. Many more accidents happen in home, not in countryside or in a car.

IF WE ARE GOING TO CLAP WE CANT FORGET TO CLAP FOR :-
ARMED FORCES... army and navy who go to war knowing they could die for us, amazing self sacrifice, to made people free.
RETAIL STAFF - retail staff like my daughter who work all night doing backbreaking work filling the shelves for minimum wage.
MANY OTHERS.....
(Sorry long)

God bless. Keep safe.

I noticed the above on videos people were posting of the police turning up outside hospitals. They then all stand together clapping!
