Clapping for the NHS

Moomin8 · 02/04/2020 09:32

This makes me cringe. The U.K. shrugged its shoulders and voted for a government which they knew decimated the NHS a few months ago.

And now people are standing on their doorsteps clapping. I think it's beyond insulting. I know we didn't all vote conservative but how patronising when NHS staff are putting their lives at risk.

When you clap, you are clapping for the NHS, not for the Tory govt. There is a political issue at hand, but don't make appreciating the hard work of our doctors and nurses political. In my view.

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 02/04/2020 10:35

You realise the NHS was in just as much trouble under Labour don't you......or that the worst run clinical group happens to be the Labour run one in Wales..... Labour voters tend to be pretty short sited when it comes to that

If you are one of the worried well that runs to the GP for any small ailment which could be dealt with by a pharmacist or if you are obese or you've had a sex change or boob job on the NHS then you only have yourselves to blame that we are in the state we are in when it comes to the NHS - we've all taken it for granted if we take a good long hard look at ourselves

itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 02/04/2020 10:36

And I worked for t he NHS for 13 years under Labour as I recall it was Tony Blair et al that started the cuts ......

An inconvenient truth that the Labour voters don't want to acknowledge

Tory in blaming Labour shock.

No doubt Corbyn is responsible for covid 19 as well.

HerMajBishop · 02/04/2020 10:39

It was a very touching event on my street last week. I didn’t see ‘virtue signalling’. I saw isolated and quite frightened neighbours, many of them old, coming out to smile and wave at each other and show their massive respect and gratitude for our NHS workers.

I don’t know how it will go tonight. But I think those who don’t want to do it should stay indoors and shut up. It’s not a time to be a miserable critic.

I’m a lifelong Labour voter, btw.

DaveMinion · 02/04/2020 10:44

I find this clapping thing really cringe and I work for the NHS. It’s not political I just don’t like it.

Don't do it. It's not compulsory.

For me, if it lifts the spirits of just one NHS worker, well then it's worth the 120 seconds of my time.

tiggertogger · 02/04/2020 10:49

The NHS is better funded under the Tories than it ever was under Labour. Maybe it's not at levels where Labour may have planned to fund it (easy to promise and not have to deliver).

HarryElephante · 02/04/2020 10:51

The NHS is better funded under the Tories than it ever was under Labour

This is incorrect.

I clapped. But I also wrote a email to my MP asking for them to increase the wages for NHS staff.
Maybe people will actually stop to think before voting in the next election!

I didn’t vote for the government that decimating our NHS and I know many, many people who work in the NHS who will be both working their arses off in the upcoming months and putting themselves at much higher risk than I am. It’s an above and beyond situation.
So if you don’t want to clap don’t, and if you do then go for it.

AlexaCrowe · 02/04/2020 12:26

Imagine if your boss/clients told you they weren’t going to pay you what you’re worth or show you any respect but every Friday as you leave work they’d give you a round of applause... I think it’s patronising and insulting. Especially because of low wages, poor conditions, people voting in parties who want to destroy the NHS, the amount of people who waste their time, the amount of people who abuse them and disrespect them. However I’m not an NHS worker, maybe they appreciate it.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 02/04/2020 12:28

Oh not this again. Okay, I promise not to clap.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 02/04/2020 12:28

@Ihopeyourcakeisshithope
Correct. There isnt a health service on earth that can do this pandemic

koshkatt · 02/04/2020 12:29

I voted Conservative, mainly because anyone who seriously wants to live somewhere with Corbyn, Abbott and their henchmen governing must be on glue

Neither of those things means I don’t think the current shower have totally fucked us over in relation to this pandemic

I agree although I did not vote Tory. I spoiled my ballot.

Moomin8 · 02/04/2020 12:56

@tiggertogger - hilarious listening to Tories like you trying to say that the health service is now better funded than it ever was. If you're going to talk rubbish, check your sources first.

Just because no health service is prepared for a pandemic, the fact of the matter is still that more people will die from this coronavirus because of 10 years of cuts to the NHS.

OP posts:
tiggertogger · 02/04/2020 13:03

Your graph shows increases so while the increases are getting smaller they are added onto a base which means the number is higher. Tories like me know how to read graphs 🤣

DaisyDreaming · 02/04/2020 13:11

I would of preferred last weeks clap and then another one right at the end rather than weekly but at least it isn’t daily and with pots and pans like some countries! Last week my friend was coming out of a clients house at 8 and felt very touched by the clapping after a long hard day. I thought of all keyworkers while clapping. Yes it doesn’t fix what the government has done but it’s one minute of showing appreciation

queenqueenqueen · 02/04/2020 13:13

Totally agree OP, it made me cringe too

Moomin8 · 02/04/2020 13:15

Can you not read? It says 'how spending has slowed down'

It's plainly obvious to anyone who uses the NHS and doctors who work within it that the service is on its knees.

I assume you are neither of those?

And where is your actual evidence that the NHS is better funded than it ever was?

OP posts:
Moomin8 · 02/04/2020 13:17

Well 'showing gratitude' is about as useful as those 'be kind' platitudes which were often spouted by people on social media platforms last month.

Funny how quickly that changed when people started the selfish stockpiling.

Sorry but I think gratitude is doing something useful

OP posts:
hibbledobble · 02/04/2020 13:18

I am frontline NHS: a junior doctor now working on the covid-19 wards.

To offer a different perspective here, last week so many of my colleagues talked about how touched they were by the clapping, and how it had lifted their moods in a time of anxiety, with a lot of trauma at work.

Yes, we all want decent working conditions, and a fairly funded NHS. I am personally provided with sufficient PPE at work.
