Clapping for the NHS

This makes me cringe. The U.K. shrugged its shoulders and voted for a government which they knew decimated the NHS a few months ago.

And now people are standing on their doorsteps clapping. I think it's beyond insulting. I know we didn't all vote conservative but how patronising when NHS staff are putting their lives at risk.

I’m a nurse and I don’t like the clapping.

What exactly is a clap going to do?

We all know the public are thankful for what we are doing, we don’t want this big show of gratitude.

We want correct PPE and testing for staff.

IVflytrap · 02/04/2020 13:24

I don't see why it can't be both.

It's entirely possible to clap for the NHS and also campaign to either get the Tories out, or try to somehow force their hand so that they start prioritising and funding the NHS again, long-term.

As for the posts saying "well Labour did it too!" That doesn't make it OK. As my nan would have said, if Labour jumped off a cliff, would you follow? If the Tories are incapable of having minds of their own, instead blaming a government that hasn't been in power for a decade for their decisions and mistakes, then they shouldn't be in power either.

I mean every graph and chart and spending report that you can find will show you the same thing...This one is from the HoC library but every source shows the same.

That's quite a catch all though isnt it, about giving "those in the NHS" a pay rise. Who do you mean exactly? The nurses,, the general assistants, the doctors or every Tom, Dick or Harry who has any link to the NHS whatsoever?

Moomin8 · 02/04/2020 18:00

@tiggertogger so the care worn doctors and nurses who work for the NHS are lying are they?

Do you use the NHS yourself?

I had a baby in December abs what the hospital care has come to is absolutely shocking when I compare it to when I had my now nearly 11 year old.

Public sector workers had pay freezes for years after the coalition. Please stop with the churlish approach Hmm

It’s just not very British is it?

StoneofDestiny · 02/04/2020 18:20

Weekly thing is beyond stupid - better it was a one off on 'a high' and maybe a day of celebration at the end of it all.

Letting it die out through disinterest or lack of regular participation is a bad idea.

Moomin8 · 02/04/2020 18:26

It's not that I don't think we should show appreciation. I just think it's rude if that's how people think appreciation should be shown by bloody clapping.

And yes I do think that all NHS staff should have a pay rise.

I don’t want to do it, neither does DH but we are the pariahs of the close if we don’t Confused

MadameBee · 02/04/2020 19:27

My 87 year old neighbour loved it, I phoned her today to tell her it’s on again tonight, she was thrilled.

We need stuff to look forward to as everything else is cancelled!

Who is it actually harming?

Pulppixies · 02/04/2020 19:29

Labour voters really do have short memories when it comes to labour and the NHS. Also, look at Wales which is Labour run. It’s horrendous.

Labour voters really need to stop living in the past

ChilliMayo · 02/04/2020 19:38

We are doing it along my rural lane but I think we all just need to reassure each other that there is life outside our gates. We are all able to exercise our dogs/selves on our own land, as far as I know I am the only one leaving the Lane for work, many are having food deliveries from farm stores etc so we haven't seen each other for days and days...we just need to hear other for a couple of minutes.

firstimemamma · 02/04/2020 19:40

@MadameBee "Who is it actually harming?" I don't think the interrupted babies of nhs workers (or any workers for that matter) appreciate it much. I wish it wasn't at 8pm.

MadameBee · 02/04/2020 19:44

What time would you like it to be?

voiceofsanitary · 02/04/2020 19:49

Virtue signalling bollocks - as is most of the virtue signalling about self-isolation.
People care for them and theirs and not much else, it was ever thus and ever will be. We wouldn't have a Tory government if not.
Clapping is easy - true sacrifice is hard.

FfsCorona · 02/04/2020 19:56

God just let people clap, we can’t do much else at the moment, it makes people think they are doing something there is no harm

voiceofsanitary · 02/04/2020 19:59

it makes people think they are doing something there is no harm

They're doing fuck all except banging their hands together though.

NemophilistRebel · 02/04/2020 20:00

The fireworks are going off Blush

voiceofsanitary · 02/04/2020 20:00

And waking the babies of NHS workers.... Hmm

CarlottaValdez · 02/04/2020 20:02

I wish it was earlier. Load of idiots banging pans together and blowing whistles and stuff on my street. Hope there aren’t any NHS workers trying to sleep before their night shift starts.

MarshaBradyo · 02/04/2020 20:03

Ah I was sceptical again but it was nice

EasyTarget · 02/04/2020 20:03

Absolutely no one is doing it round here. Didn't last time either.

NemophilistRebel · 02/04/2020 20:04

It’s not going to go on every week?

What NHS worker actually appreciates this?

And surly fireworks are dangerous and could cause someone to need an ambulance in this situation it’s irresponsible , not to mention non-essential

FaFoutis · 02/04/2020 20:05

It fizzled out almost immediately here.
