Acquitted but still impeached ... Trump thread 99

I’ll tell you a funny story. I’m a member of a very right-wing US politics online discussion group for kicks. The moderator of the group controls - and gets involved in - every discussion. (I should say the membership of this group is over 50K and the number of posts a day is generally 30 or so.) She’s also a typical Trumpian in that she reels off the standard “lamestream mass media” etc lines” and she mutes anyone who disagrees with her.

Anyway, I took her on eventually. She said that the Democratic candidates wanted to get rid of the Constitution. To this, I replied Trump flouts the Constitution on a regular basis. “What? Provide examples!” she replies. “Emoluments clause,” I replied. “That’s just one.”

GUYS. SHE HAD NOT HEARD OF THE EMOLUMENTS CLAUSE.

She then just spat something about she doesn’t read mass media lies and that’s why she didn’t know and muted me.

I've watched Andrew Cuomo and he makes sense.

I've only just found out his brother is Chris Cuomo from CNN Blush. Seeing them side by side in this clip, why didn't I realise this? They're the spit of each other, and same surname. Embarrassing.

The clip is funny.. despite all that's going on, they banter like brothers at the end.

Roussette · 25/03/2020 07:04

Also why is Trump having a go at Andrew Cuomo about the fact he didn't buy ventilator masks 2 years ago?
No one knew this was coming..

ludothedog · 25/03/2020 08:59

Well, they kind of did know that a pandemic would happen sooner rather than later and that this would be a matter of national security. Netflix did a series on it. That's why Obama set up a department to deal with it. It was always a possibility.

AcrossthePond55 · 25/03/2020 12:29

He's having a go because A Cuomo is calling Trump out on the lack of Federal preparedness and that he's saying that Federal supplies are not being parceled out in the correct way. And he's putting the blame exactly where it belongs, on Scrotus. Naturally the Bloviator cannot stand this criticism.

I can see where A Cuomo is coming from. He's arguing that NY's need for respirator units is greater and they should be getting more than places where the need is not as great. The units are needed by all affected states, yes, but NYC at this point appears to have the greatest need and is not getting the greatest share. NYC has an absolute crisis on its hands and is begging for respirator units. My own state of California (pop 39.5 mil) has 2200 cases statewide (although our testing has not been great). The CITY of New York alone (pop 8.6 mil) has 15,600. That's the CITY, not the state. The STATE of New York (pop 19.5mil) has 26,348 total cases. I guess A Cuomo is figuring "The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few".

I think that front and centre in Trump's mind is the impact that all of this will have on the Trump brand and the Trump hotels etc, he is unable to control his selfish impulses and it leaks out of him all the time, he's just a blinkered old man, he refuses to deviate from his own agenda no matter what the cost, even if he appears to be accepting other viewpoints he spins them round so that they serve his agenda.
He will be his own executioner

I was impressed with Cuomo the other day.
Straight facts, proactive.
I saw that he started producing NY city's own hand sanitizer to sell a couple of weeks ago.
This might make his political career to the top.

ludothedog · 25/03/2020 13:51

Who the fuck thinks that Trump is doing a good job?

Roussette · 25/03/2020 13:53

NY seems to be an epicentre doesn't it... so surely needs more equipment. I listened to Cuomo last night, he is very eloquent in putting across that this is NY but tomorrow it will be another city

Mockerswithnoknockers · 25/03/2020 13:57

Who the fuck thinks that Trump is doing a good job?

Half the population. More than enough to re-elect him.

I understand why many people still think he is.
It hasn't had a major effect yet in his core supporters, and outside NY.

Give it a couple of months.
Although he may greatly benefit from individual actions by Governors and Mayors.

www.washingtonpost.com/business/2020/03/25/trump-senate-coronavirus-economic-stimulus-2-trillion/

"The legislation ensures that these taxpayer-backed loans cannot go to firms owned by President Trump, other White House officials or members of Congress. This would suggest that Trump-owned properties, including hotels that have been impacted, cannot seek taxpayer assistance."

lionheart · 25/03/2020 15:07

Lots of questions will be asked, aside from the obvious ones about the human cost.

i thought it was why Trump was against Andrew Cuomo even before this emergency made him disagree with Trump. CNN has been The Enemy for ages because they have always failed to genuflect properly, and if Trump will sack someone's brother for the crime of having a brother who gave evidence at an enquiry, he is capable of any amount of stupid.

Regarding the poll (I think that may be the highest approval rating he has ever had in any poll, and it is still under 50%?) I suspect that during a crisis quite a lot of people would say that a blue-arsed baboon was doing a good job as leader if said baboon looked unruffled (which is another word for uncaring) and appeared every day saying "it will all be fine".

DetroitLake · 25/03/2020 15:23

Who on earth is stupid enough to actually approve of him! 49 percent! Doomed. We are doomed.

AcrossthePond55 · 25/03/2020 15:25

What I heard about the stimulus package is that it says that no money can go to a business controlled by Members of Congress, POTUS, VP (and I believe, their families). Not 'owned by', controlled by. So exactly what does that mean? If it's in a blind trust, then it's not 'controlled by' the exempted persons, it's controlled by trustees. Of course, Scrotus refused the blind trust so maybe that's pointed right at him.

Obvs this will need clarification and I'm sure we'll get that once the major news sources have had their experts dissect it.

HoldMyLobster · 25/03/2020 16:23

Wouldn't it be ironic if his businesses go under because he refused to divest from them and therefore can't receive bailout money.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/03/2020 16:24

I found this interesting: www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-52012049

Roussette · 25/03/2020 16:26

Oh my, that's an irony I would like Lobster.

All those files piled up with blank paper inside when he gave a speech as he won the election. He never divested anything

Overunder3 · 25/03/2020 17:37

Does anyone else think that the US deaths are suspiciously low for such a big country? I can't imagine they genuinely reflecting the situation

lionheart · 25/03/2020 18:00

Thanks Asking.

I think this is just the start Overunder3.

Look at those beaches packed with young party goers just recently.

DetroitLake · 25/03/2020 18:01

Big but very spread out outside of major urban centers. I think some deaths are probably being hidden in flu figures and it is about to take off in the next week or so.

AcrossthePond55 · 25/03/2020 18:07

Over I think the numbers are accurate as far as it goes. I don't think anyone is intentionally underreporting.

One of the things to remember is how big the US is and that there are HUGE areas across the nation that have very sparse population per square mile. This helps slow down spread. I also think by and large there are not a huge amount of people living right on top of each other except in a some of the major cities. There are a lot more single houses and 1-3 floor apt buildings across the nation than there are NY style high rises with 100s of flats.

But I also think we're just entering our 'spike' phase. I think we're going to start to see spikes in many US cities any day now due to both new cases and increased testing.
