Acquitted but still impeached ... Trump thread 99

I’ll tell you a funny story. I’m a member of a very right-wing US politics online discussion group for kicks. The moderator of the group controls - and gets involved in - every discussion. (I should say the membership of this group is over 50K and the number of posts a day is generally 30 or so.) She’s also a typical Trumpian in that she reels off the standard “lamestream mass media” etc lines” and she mutes anyone who disagrees with her.

Anyway, I took her on eventually. She said that the Democratic candidates wanted to get rid of the Constitution. To this, I replied Trump flouts the Constitution on a regular basis. “What? Provide examples!” she replies. “Emoluments clause,” I replied. “That’s just one.”

GUYS. SHE HAD NOT HEARD OF THE EMOLUMENTS CLAUSE.

She then just spat something about she doesn’t read mass media lies and that’s why she didn’t know and muted me.

AIBU?

Newest Shortage in New York: The City Is Running Out of Dogs to Adopt

(Hopefully all these adoptions will turn out to be forever and not just for Covid-19mas.)

Overunder3 · 25/03/2020 18:38

Yes that's true, all good points. At the moment they are showing a similar number of cases as Italy but so few deaths, however true that it would be much more spread out.

I don't know if it's been posted but this is a good article. It looks like it's been spreading a while!

Gosh, that's a scary article Overunder.

lionheart · 25/03/2020 21:37

Yes.

Lweji · 25/03/2020 21:40

Compared to Spain and Italy the US still has a much lower number of cases per million.
The actual exponential curve has only started at the beginning of March, as did the deaths.
There will be ups and downs, but the number of dead are likely to increase soon.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 25/03/2020 21:49

We simply do not know how many cases per million the USA actually has, though, Lweji; a very small percentage of the population has been tested we know this because we know that the tests were not available and there is no saying how many of the people left untested in February and so far in March had or have it and are therefore cases really.

Deaths will go up, certainly. Whether it will be admitted that they are deaths from covid-19 is anyone's guess.

(I get a 404 for your link.)

Lweji · 25/03/2020 22:16

Yes, tests were very late, and I've noticed a few states with unusually high death rates, which is an indication that they're still not testing enough.
New York seems to be fairly efficient, and it accounts for the vast majority of cases so far.

Lweji · 25/03/2020 22:17

The numbers in Italy are also underestimated.

Thanks!

Not a very cheerful link, but straight-talking...

I have a sneaking suspicion Dr Fauci may get a giggle out of that image if he sees it. Just a wee suspicion Grin

HoldMyLobster · 26/03/2020 00:48

My state has a backlog of a week for tests to be processed. Absolutely no idea how many people have Covid-19 here.

'In short, the Trump administration forced a catastrophic strategic surprise onto the American people. But unlike past strategic surprises—Pearl Harbor, the Iranian revolution of 1979, or especially 9/11—the current one was brought about by unprecedented indifference, even willful negligence. Whereas, for example, the 9/11 Commission Report assigned blame for the al Qaeda attacks on the administrations of presidents Ronald Reagan through George W. Bush, the unfolding coronavirus crisis is overwhelmingly the sole responsibility of the current White House.'

I am not sure you can compare them - the US is massive country where as the others are more compact.

Look at the cases in the cities - and the proportion there. That's what people should be thinking about.

Just like the mortality rate is low overall - but changes significantly as you focus in on certain age groups.

lionheart · 26/03/2020 09:44

Trump does not like to lose.

'According to Der Spiegel, the G7 foreign ministers haven't been able to agree on a joint statement because of Pompeo's insistence it refer to #coronavirus as the "Wuhan virus". Pompeo did not deny that this morning - said G7 don't agree on everything.'

Lweji · 26/03/2020 11:09

I've done a few calculations, and even assuming that 1.4% of cases die, which is more a case when there's underreporting, it suggests that the true number of cases in relation to those reported are:

Washington: 3.5x (that's 6800 compared to 2600)
Louisiana and Georgia: 2.5x

California could be at least 50% more cases

With much fewer deaths, so it could be a statistical bug:
Vermont: 4,5x
Indiana, Oregon, Oklahoma, Kentucky: 2x

So, instead of:
New York 32966
New Jersey 4402
California 2998
Washington 2588
Michigan 2295
Florida 1977
Illinois 1865
Massachusetts 1838
Louisiana 1795

It can well be more like (1% deaths to 1,4% deaths in relation to total cases):
New York 36600 to 26143
Washington 13200 to 9429
California 6500 to 4643
Louisiana 6500 to 4643
New Jersey 6200 to 4429
Georgia 4700 to 3357
Michigan 4300 to 3071
Florida 2300 to 1643
Illinois 1900 to 1357

I haven't taken into account the population for each state. And numbers could be skewed by many different factors.

lionheart · 26/03/2020 13:16

That's a lot of calculations, Lweji. Smile

None of the answers are good.

Roussette · 26/03/2020 13:39

Such an interesting article linked by Obama. It's long but well worth reading.

Barack Obama
@BarackObama
Here’s a useful overview of the likely scenarios that the world will be facing in the coming months while managing this pandemic. So much depends on our ability to make good decisions going forward along with our ability to remain resilient.

That is really excellent (but bad obviously).

Here is another;

lionheart · 26/03/2020 19:33

m.jacksonfreepress.com/news/2020/mar/24/gov-tate-reeves-orders-limited-gatherings-today-ex/

'Gov. Tate Reeves signed an executive order early this evening superseding a patchwork of local bans on public gatherings in Mississippi and other heightened restrictions that several municipalities across the state have ordered or considered in the wake of COVID-19’s spread inside Mississippi. The state reached 320 official cases today, up 300 percent since 80 known cases on Friday.

The order seems to declare that most types of businesses in Mississippi are "essential" and thus exempt from social-distancing requirements suggested in the order. "The uninterrupted delivery of essential services and functions is vital to infrastructure viability, critical to maintain continuity of functions critical to public health and safety, as well as economic and national security, and is crucial to community resilience, continuity of essential functions and to promote the security and safety of Mississippi residents even as the nation limits human interaction and engages in social distancing," the order stated.'

lionheart · 26/03/2020 19:35

Nancy Pelosi is 80 today.

"It won't happen unless we respect science, science, science. And for those who say we choose prayer over science, I say science is an answer to our prayers."

Lweji · 26/03/2020 20:23

THE, I'd say.

I hope this is, if not the nail, at least many nails in the coffin of alternative facts and opinions counting more than data and scientific analyses.
