Acquitted but still impeached ... Trump thread 99

I’ll tell you a funny story. I’m a member of a very right-wing US politics online discussion group for kicks. The moderator of the group controls - and gets involved in - every discussion. (I should say the membership of this group is over 50K and the number of posts a day is generally 30 or so.) She’s also a typical Trumpian in that she reels off the standard “lamestream mass media” etc lines” and she mutes anyone who disagrees with her.

Anyway, I took her on eventually. She said that the Democratic candidates wanted to get rid of the Constitution. To this, I replied Trump flouts the Constitution on a regular basis. “What? Provide examples!” she replies. “Emoluments clause,” I replied. “That’s just one.”

GUYS. SHE HAD NOT HEARD OF THE EMOLUMENTS CLAUSE.

She then just spat something about she doesn’t read mass media lies and that’s why she didn’t know and muted me.

AIBU?

My husband and I were both dual military and when we retired

If you're retired military why aren't you covered by Tricare for Life or Champus/Champva?

HoldMyLobster · 12/03/2020 01:41

Or you know, UK is an island and viruses can't swim?

I had forgotten that Grin

Regarding the ACA, Leonard French put up an interesting video on his YouTube channel today about how it's about to found unconstitutional by SCOTUS. A lot of info about the reasons why, and what happens when it's gone. Not just his opinion as a lawyer, he reads from the SCOTUS determination as I understand it.

Title: The Supreme Court is about to find Obamacare Unconstitutional Summary: The stage is set for the US Supreme Court to rule on whether the Affordable Care Act, aka Obamacare, can survive without the "individual mandate" that was removed in the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. Without a basis in the Constitution, the Federal Gov't can't regulate state insurance markets.

It has English subtitles also.

PerkingFaintly · 12/03/2020 08:30

Mirador's link makes clear right from the start that it is Trumpcare which is likely to be found unconstitutional.

Obamacare was constitutional.

Part of the ACA (Obamacare as was) was founded on tax laws. In 2017 Trump passed new tax legislation which – surprise surprise – gave large tax cuts to the wealthy and large businesses, and also removed the ACA's involvement with tax law.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_Cuts_and_Jobs_Act_of_2017

The effect of this – again surprise surprise – is to (probably) invalidate the ACA via this backdoor. This method allows the Trump administration to destroy the ACA without it being obvious to the general public what he's doing; while Trumpies can get the public repeating soundbites like "Obamacare was unconstitutional".

Win win win win win!

Well, as long as you're not a less-well-off American in need of healthcare. But who cares about them?

Lweji · 12/03/2020 09:27

But who cares about them?

Not many, until they start dying or staying at home sick with coronavirus and transmitting it to the more wealthy without anyone being able to control it.

lionheart · 12/03/2020 15:57

Exactly. Walls won't do.

Lweji · 12/03/2020 17:50

At times like this even W. seems like a genius. He was smart enough to acknowledge when he was out of his depth and let people do their work (Cheney as well, unfortunately).

Lweji · 12/03/2020 18:36

Yes, ban travel from China and Europe but meet infected Brazilian.

Pelosi may still have a chance before the 8th November.

www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/03/12/who-could-have-predicted-trump-would-be-such-bad-crisis-manager-everyone-actually/

'Who could have predicted that Trump would be such an incompetent crisis manager? Pretty much everyone, actually. Yet nearly 63 million Americans voted for him anyway — and the Republican-controlled Senate refused to convict and remove him in January for his impeachable conduct. The entire country is now paying for those colossally irresponsible decisions as we face the worst crisis since 9/11 under the bungling leadership of the worst president in modern times.'

TheClaws · 12/03/2020 23:29

This is apparently not occurring, and if so, it is disingenuous for Trump to make a claim that is so easily disproved. Why does he do this?

Josh Marshall @joshtpm

Trump claims (falsely) all Americans returning to country are being tested:"We have heavily tested. If an American coming back or anybody coming back, we have a tremendous testing set up where people coming in have to be tested ... if it shows positive ... We have to quarantine."

Why does he do this?

Because he's a pathological liar who lives in a bubble of his own reality. And will say whatever he needs to say to 'soothe' his fanbase.

TheClaws · 13/03/2020 05:24

I’ve come to the conclusion - and I was ashamed of it for some time, but not now - that a great deal of adults are truly stupid. They don’t think. If they do, it’s in tiny, comforting soundbites from the social media they know. I detest memes as they are often used as an alternative to an actual response. Trump can lie brashly like that and they will never know - but if someone says to them that Trump didn’t tell the truth, you just know they’ll defend him. They would attack that person first before Trump.

Reading that Daily Beast article lion... it's shocking but unsurprising. Whilst officials could be tackling this huge problem, they are instead mopping up and trying to clarify all the wrong information Trump gave out in his recent speech.
If it was crafted by Miller and Kushner, surely that means they haven't got a clue either...
Worrying times.

lionheart · 13/03/2020 08:17

The suggestion is that Trump resisted increased testing because the figures would make him look bad and shed doubt on his more ludicrous claims...

www.npr.org/2020/03/12/814881355/white-house-knew-coronavirus-would-be-a-major-threat-but-response-fell-short

Roussette · 13/03/2020 10:49

I've also read (but NO idea if it's true) that the Trump org are trying to get a patent on some COVID test equipment which is why he delayed.

This is probably bollocks but the trouble is... everything we hear in relation to him is believable.

There is a parody Trump twitter account and there is very little difference between the two sometimes...

Lweji · 13/03/2020 10:58

Most people don't have the time or inclination to research a subject or even have the training to be able to understand it.

COVID-19 is hard because there are no experts. Everyone is learning about it and constant new evidence changes the advice.
It's confusing for everyone.

Most adults, with their limitations will be happy with reassuring messages from those they trust (God knows why in some cases).

AcrossthePond55 · 13/03/2020 12:26

As far as segments of the population, I don't know if I'd say it was stupidity as much as naïveté in some people and fear in others when it comes to Corona. Some still feel that people in authority have their best interests at heart and would never lie to them. Others are so afraid they'll cling on to anything that abates that fear. Maybe that's the same being stupid, idk?

But what IS stupid is this:

lionheart · 13/03/2020 13:55

Ah yes, I saw that.

Do you think the healing works if you record it and play it back later?

AcrossthePond55 · 13/03/2020 15:10

Nah. But that's only because it probably doesn't work until you 'make a donation'.

Lweji · 13/03/2020 15:35

Just like Jesus. I'll multiply bread and fish for a fee.

Anyway...
The Administration will find someone to blame. I hope it doesn't go to state of emergency, which could end up with serious consequences for Democracy. Confused

lionheart · 13/03/2020 16:04

They will exploit it, no question.

I forgot about the donation part.
