Acquitted but still impeached ... Trump thread 99

I’ll tell you a funny story. I’m a member of a very right-wing US politics online discussion group for kicks. The moderator of the group controls - and gets involved in - every discussion. (I should say the membership of this group is over 50K and the number of posts a day is generally 30 or so.) She’s also a typical Trumpian in that she reels off the standard “lamestream mass media” etc lines” and she mutes anyone who disagrees with her.

Anyway, I took her on eventually. She said that the Democratic candidates wanted to get rid of the Constitution. To this, I replied Trump flouts the Constitution on a regular basis. “What? Provide examples!” she replies. “Emoluments clause,” I replied. “That’s just one.”

GUYS. SHE HAD NOT HEARD OF THE EMOLUMENTS CLAUSE.

She then just spat something about she doesn’t read mass media lies and that’s why she didn’t know and muted me.

AIBU?

@lionheart No she didn't. There is no muddying of the waters on this. Jill will have no impact on the outcome of the democratic nomination or the election in general. She was nothing more than a joke. At the end of the day its going to be between Biden and Trump and Biden won't win

Leaannb · 11/03/2020 22:31

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime because Trump has better support and Biden is having issues with the Vet vote. Don't screw with the Vet vote. After Biden's handling of a vet at a Michigan rally......Lots and Lots of Vets are going to vote Trump. Along with all the conservatives. We will have Trump as President for another 4 years

Leaannb · 11/03/2020 22:48

@Holdmylobster....I don't watch tv so that would be a hard no. I know this about talking to my friends,my neighbors, by seeing the ungodly support Trump still has across America. Biden screwed himself when he told people after the Detroit Rally that he was just holding the place until the other nominees could get their stuff together in 2024 and win the Presidency then. People are furious over that statement and its pushed even more people to Trump's side. You guys are reading whats in the major newspapers or international news syndicates. You guys aren't reading the small time papers, listening to people in local diners,in line at the gas station etc......I travel a lot for my job. To the point I have been to 49 out of 50 states and its the same everywhere. Unending support for Trump and the more Biden fucks up with the way he handles things the more support Trump gets. The very sad reality is that Trump is incredibly popular and will stay that way. Do I wish it was different? Of course. I voted for Sanders in my state's primary and donated heavily to his campaign but alas he is out. Most of his voters will not vote for Biden (including me) leaving us no choice but to either sit at home in November or vote for Trump. Democrats fucked themselves majorly by wasting time on impeachment when they knew it was going to fail. Instead it just divided our country even more

So now I've provoked you into actually replying to posts Leaannb - tell me why Obamacare is worthless? Why does someone like me not deserve healthcare just because I'm self-employed?

HoldMyLobster · 11/03/2020 23:02

Really? When's the last time you stood in a diner line in Maine and chatted to the locals about Biden?

TheClaws · 11/03/2020 23:12

Leaannb TheClaws Qhy are you so worried about North Korea when earlier this week you guys had Russian fighters trying to get into your airspace and had to be chased away. 4 days later the US and Canadian fighter jets were chasing Russian fighters away from Alaska. But thats ok. They just decided to buzz the Shetland Islands. So whats the worry about North Korea

  1. Because I hadn’t heard about the Russian fighters before I posted. 2. I like to post about a range of things that are occurring, and that includes North Korea. 3. The worry about North Korea is they are highly unpredictable, as is Trump, and the two countries were threatening nuclear war just a few months ago. 4. I can post what I want.

It's interesting that you say Trump is very popular: he lost the popular vote last time by 2,868,686. I'd say that indicated that he wasn't all that popular: the only president to have had a larger majority of individual voters against him was George W Bush, of the five who've had that distinction.

And his approval rating in all the polls, even the Fox ones, is low: see projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/

At this date of their presidencies, only George HW Bush and Harry S Truman were less approved than Trump is now.

I think maybe your anecdotal evidence isn't quite borne out by the numbers elsewhere.

Lweji · 11/03/2020 23:41

Russian fighters coming very close to air space is not new. It happens in Europe.
The US will send spy planes.

Leaannb · 12/03/2020 00:09

@holdmylobster.....Having health care should be at the minimum a very basic right. The ACA was extremely flawed though. It didn't go far UC enough ( UC) and it depended on the individual states to expand Medicaid. Not to mention the horrific fine it created . Thankfully,Trump did get rid of the fine. However, it caused millions of people who had always had health insurance to be priced out of healthcare and millioms more left hanging. Over 27 million middle class Americans are still without healthcare and every year 500,000 people lose their healthcare due to not being able to afford the ridiculous amounts for health insurance offered on the Marketplaces and the very simple fact that the premiums, deductibles and copays are extremely cost prohibitive. My husband and I were both dual military and when we retired and deciding about health insurance it cost us 4000 a month to insure our family. We could afford it. Millions can't and still go without. Our elderly still has to decide between medication and food. Our young families still can't afford the most basic of health insurance. UC should come from the Federal Goverment. Not dependent on what states can afford to make Medicaid for everyone

Leaannb · 12/03/2020 00:18

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime First off the polls aren't asking middle America what they think. They are asking a small number of people and using sampling data. Secondly, you don't have to win the popular vote to be elected for President. If that was the case we wouldn't be here right now because Clinton would have been elected in 2016 and Gore would have beat Bush in 2000 Its the electoral count that actually counts in our Presidential election. Unfortunately Trump has the numbers in the red states and unfortunately because of our disenfranchised youth he will keep the numbers.

HoldMyLobster · 12/03/2020 00:25

@Leaannb none of that makes the ACA 'worthless'. Just because it didn't fix everything doesn't mean it was worthless.

But TBH if you're the kind of Sanders supporter who'd refuse to vote for Biden, thus enabling Trump to get back into power, you obviously don't really give that much of a shit about things like fixing healthcare.

Leaannb · 12/03/2020 00:27

@Lweji Tell me about it. 22 year Vet of the USAF....But we aren't talking about spy planes. We are talking about Russian fighter jets being chased from your Airspace and the US and Canadian Airspace within a couple of days. My biggest question about that situation......Why weren't the F-15 Eagle squadrons dispatched from Lakenheath to jelp. Why were they left grounded? Where was the 492,493 squadrons at? Thats why we are there. Its a part of the SOFA agreements between our two countries. I can understand why the 494 wasn't dispatched they just got back from the sandbox on the first. So what the hell?

Leaannb · 12/03/2020 00:33

@Holdmylobster All of that does make it worthless. It hurt the people that it needed to help the most. Biden has been very vocal about protecting the ACA and even expanding on it. It needs to be scrapped and a real effort for Universal Care to be implemented. We are the only nation out of all First World Nations who doesn't have UC. Why? So why would I vote for someone who I disagree with so vehemently with? Ill keep my vote at home

HoldMyLobster · 12/03/2020 01:04

OK Leaannb. If Trump stays in power, millions of Americans will probably lose their pre-existing conditions coverage, if not their health insurance entirely. As I said before clearly you just don't really give a shit about fixing healthcare.

TheClaws · 12/03/2020 01:04

Leaannb Your fatalism is astonishing. Why would you waste your vote on Trump? You say “why would I vote for someone who I disagree with so vehemently?” Don’t you disagree with Trump’s policies? He won’t do universal healthcare - that’s a given.

Travel into the US from Europe will be banned for the next 30 days.

Exceptions are US citizens returning from abroad who meet 'requirements' (not specified). Travel from the UK is also excepted.

This is from Scrotus' speech just now.

AcrossthePond55 · 12/03/2020 01:18

Correction: To and from Europe.
This is cut/paste from the 'live updates' string on CNN.com

^Trump will suspend all US travel to and from Europe for next 30 days
President Trump announced tonight that all travel from Europe to the United States will be suspended for the next 30 days, except for the UK.^

Trump made the decision in order to "keep new cases from entering our shores." He said the new rule will go into effect beginning Friday at midnight.

"We will be suspending all travel from Europe to the United States for the next 30 days. The new rules will go into effect Friday at midnight. These restrictions will are be adjusted subject to conditions on the ground," the President said from the Oval Office. Trump said there will be certain exemptions made for certain Americans "who have undergone appropriate screenings."

"These prohibitions will not only apply to the tremendous amount of trade and cargo, but various other things as we get approval. Anything coming from Europe to the United States is what we are discussing. These restrictions will also not apply to the United Kingdom," Trump added.

AcrossthePond55 · 12/03/2020 01:21

Well, now I'm confused. Some sources are saying to and from Europe, some are saying only 'from'.

At any rate, anyone who has travel planned to the US should check on things. Nothing has been said about people flying from the UK with flights originating or stopping elsewhere before landing in the US.

HoldMyLobster · 12/03/2020 01:22

I wonder why the UK is excluded from the ban?

ludothedog · 12/03/2020 01:25

Oh dear. Its starting to get very scary.
Not sure why UK is exempt - corona virus here too!

AcrossthePond55 · 12/03/2020 01:25

Our 'special relationship' I'm sure.

Or you know, UK is an island and viruses can't swim?

AcrossthePond55 · 12/03/2020 01:31

Anyone who is not voting for whoever the Dem nominee is is casting a vote for Trump. If you feel it's right to punish the Country because your candidate didn't get enough delegates then you are not a patriot.

Besides....Claig, is that you?
