One Micro Rice Should Feed Two Adults

One packet of microwave rice, when served as a side to, say, chilli or curry, should serve two adults.

Your votes, please.

One between 2 if there's sides
One each if basic rice and curry

MintySpud · 06/02/2020 14:13

It would feel no adults in this house as we all loathe microwave rice.

Cooking rice takes about 15-20 mins and you just pour water, season and leave it. No bother. So much more appetitising, though.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 06/02/2020 15:28

Rice is extremely bland. Mostly it just takes the flavour of whatever you eat it with. The consistency is pretty much the same if you cook it the right amount of time for whatever device you're using

It really isn't - try brown basmati rice. Lovely nutty texture and taste. The highly processed white rice though is hard to get right. It goes from hard to mush in a millisecond.

I always thought I didn't like rice until I found the brown basmati. It takes a bit longer to cook than the white but it's worth it

Oh I've tried it. Rice is part of my national dish.

I prefer the bland stuff! Nothing wrong with rice that takes the flavour of the meal you're eating it with!

JRUIN · 06/02/2020 15:48

I don't know because I've never used microwaveable rice, but I doubt it.

Jellybeansincognito · 06/02/2020 17:27

Have you tried jasmine rice @WitchQueenofDarkness? It’s even better!

WalkingDeadTrainee · 06/02/2020 17:40

I am surprised at how many people eat rice AND naanShock
I can't. It's one or the otherShock

Yeahnah2020 · 06/02/2020 17:44

One packet between two people is a very small serving

MyNewBearTotoro · 06/02/2020 17:45

1 pack between 2 adults is not enough unless it’s a meal with another carb (Eg: naan bread, nachos) as well. I would usually use 2 packs between 3 adults.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 06/02/2020 17:52

@Jellybeansincognito - yes I liked that one too Grin . I also like the Japanese sticky rices.

It's really just the white long grain Uncle Ben's style that I find tasteless. I assume that the sort in the microwave rice?

gingersausage · 07/02/2020 08:32

@WitchQueenofDarkness, there’s about 20 different varieties and flavours of microwave rice. It’s not just plain white long grain Confused.

I do 2 packs between 3 adults. One likes plain white rice, one like yellow or egg fried rice depending what it’s going with, and one will eat anything so it’s easiest to buy microwave rice so everyone gets what they like. I don’t eat it at all so it’s no skin off my nose.

JillAmanda · 07/02/2020 08:36

We’re all quite greedy in this house but we share 2 packs between 4.

However if we have curry we have naan, poppadums, bhajis etc too.

SW16 · 07/02/2020 08:36

Don’t understand your question.
Do you mean ‘should but doesn’t’ or does and is easily enough’?

Oysterbabe · 07/02/2020 08:44

We split it between 2 but usually have a mini naan too.

thecatsthecats · 07/02/2020 09:16

Half a pack is fine for me, and I don't have naan, but then I do have a super-loaded curry with loads of chunky veg, beans, chickpeas and chicken thigh, which is more filling and tastier than chicken breast IMO.

I've come to prefer my carb portion smaller as my diet has progressed. Even heavy weight lifting days, I don't bulk my carbs - just the fat and protein.

GimmeTheSnacks · 07/02/2020 19:00

For me half a packet is perfect. I prefer more of the "main" part of the meal such s chilli or curry. However for DP it's got to be a whole packet with enough chicken (4 breasts), potato and vegetable curry for 4 adults Grin

QuixoticQuokka · 07/02/2020 19:06

For me half a packet is perfect. I prefer more of the "main" part of the meal such as chilli or curry. Same here.

I think it's about right for an average adult, but of course not everyone is average, and some just prefer more rice and less of the main dish, and vice versa according to personal taste.

MonnaLIza · 07/02/2020 19:07

It does in my house! Smile

user1471449295 · 07/02/2020 19:07

It should feed two adults, but it doesn’t. 1.5 packs needed

maddiemookins16mum · 07/02/2020 21:39

2 adults and a 15 year old here, we use two packs of pilau rice and it’s plenty.
One pouch between two is slightly meagre but certainly manageable depending how much curry/chilli goes with it.
There are so many variables.
