One Micro Rice Should Feed Two Adults

One packet of microwave rice, when served as a side to, say, chilli or curry, should serve two adults.

Your votes, please.

I split mine into three and freeze the other two portions. Don't have a microwave so add it to some water in a pot. The wild rice one is nice.

Sugarfreejelly · 06/02/2020 10:12

Surely it depends on what/how much you are having with it????

ElloBrian · 06/02/2020 10:13

No idea as I’ve never used pre cooked rice. But one normal sized mug of dried rice is enough for two people in my opinion.

Tombliwho · 06/02/2020 10:13

What???? Really??? That's a lot for a toddler...

Half a pack is absolutely enough for me and other family members feel the same. I only tend to have the brown rice as it’s much quicker than boiling it. However, I am very health conscious and adhere to recommended portion sizes, especially those given by my Cardiologist. It’s often quite an eye opener to see exactly what portion sizes are recommended by the NHS, BHF etc.

NemophilistRebel · 06/02/2020 10:14

We share 1 between 2 here and there’s usually some left on the plate

MercedesDeMonteChristo · 06/02/2020 10:16

My DH would probably have 2 packs, but he is South Asian and it appears the norm amongst his family/friends to eat huge portions of rice (comparatively to what I consider a portion, not sure who is right). I am calorie counting and I measured 200g of rice for my chilli the other day and he was mortified by how small it was.

OhSoOuting · 06/02/2020 10:16

Lord no - my DS can eat a whole one and he’s 2. Although to be fair, he has a curry obsession

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 06/02/2020 10:16

We split one between the two of us for chilli, but would have tortilla chips, and dips along with it. Similarly with curry we would have naan breads.

MotherWol · 06/02/2020 10:17

We keep some in the cupboard to make fried rice/nasi goreng, it doesn't look like one packet would be enough between two, but when you add in veg it's actually plenty. If we're having rice with curry etc then I'd cook fresh as it's nicer.

icannotremember · 06/02/2020 10:18

Half a packet? My god, I am full after a mere forkful , no wonder we have an obesity crisis if people are out there eating half a packet of rice at a time /s

Jellybeansincognito · 06/02/2020 10:20

Are you kidding or do you really let your toddler eat that much @Tombliwho?

RB68 · 06/02/2020 10:21

If you are watching portion sizes or lower carb 2 adults one pack is fine.

Dragonembroidery · 06/02/2020 10:22

Too little. If you're economising buy rice to boil in a pan on the hob. It takes 5 mins.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 06/02/2020 10:22

Didn't know there was even such a thing! Doesn't it go soft and mushy?

lazylinguist · 06/02/2020 10:25

Doesn't it go soft and mushy?

Why would it? No, if anything the opposite - perfectly separate, perfect textured every time.

SproutMuncher · 06/02/2020 10:26

I’m assuming tombliwho was joking

Sunnydaysrock · 06/02/2020 10:28

It's almost as though adults have differing appetites, isn't it?

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 06/02/2020 10:28

What is the issue with TAATs? Can anyone explain..

Tombliwho · 06/02/2020 10:29

No my toddler really genuinely downs packets of micro rice and chicken breasts. He is an infant body builder.

WalkingDeadTrainee · 06/02/2020 10:30

I find them infuriating.
Too much for 1, too little for 2.

BustedDreams · 06/02/2020 10:31

The secret is put in a pan and to bulk a packet out with chopped peppers, spring onion and a handful of frozen peas. Enough for a side for 2.

Or chuck in a pan with a nob of butter, splash of soy and a couple of whisked eggs, stir over moderate/high heat. Egg fried rice for 2.

Pollaidh · 06/02/2020 10:32

1 pack shared between me and DH usually. If the 2 DC are there too, then usually it's 1.5 packs. It would be rare for us to each 2 whole packs even as a family of four.

We'd eat it typically with either curry or chilli, or with some kind of protein. The rest of the plate would be vegetables - like those single 80g packs of broccoli you can steam in the microwave. We'd have 1 of those, another vegetable, half a pack of rice and steak or veg sausage.

Blimeyoreilly2020 · 06/02/2020 10:33

tenlittlecygnets the chicken breasts reference another current thread - a dh came home and ate a meal containing 4 chicken breasts and a packet of rice for 2 which was intended for the whole family.....apparently some think this is reasonable (I wouldn’t!). It’s in the most active section....

motherofawhirlwind · 06/02/2020 10:34

2 packs between 3 here....
