One Micro Rice Should Feed Two Adults

One packet of microwave rice, when served as a side to, say, chilli or curry, should serve two adults.

Your votes, please.

Ooh, the vote's close. It's Brexit all over again! Grin

We had some uncle Ben's microwave rice. One packet was fine for 2 children but not for my husband and I. So needed 3 packets for 2 adults and 2 children.

TwoleftUggs · 06/02/2020 11:30

Now, one pack between 2 adults is not quite enough in our house, but 2 packs between 2 adults and 2 dc is just right. Once the youngest dc starts to get a bigger appetite we’re goosed Grin

This is a very complex question that requires some mathematics. Luckily I have a degree in the subject!

There is some vital information missing from the OP, such as how big the packet of rice is and how much the two adults like to eat, so I'll give some example calculations. If any of it is too hard to understand, let me know and I'll try to word it a bit more simply.

Example 1:
The bag of rice weighs 200g and both adults like to eat 100g.
Answer: One micro rice DOES feed two adults!

Example 2:
The bag of rice weighs 100g, one of the adults likes to eat 20g and the other likes to eat 60g.
Answer: One micro rice DOES feed two adults!

Example 3:
The bag of rice weighs 150g, one of the adults likes to eat 70g and the other likes to eat 100g.
Answer: One micro rice DOES NOT feed two adults!

Example 4:
The bag of rice weighs 500g, one of the adults likes to eat 200g and the other likes to eat 400g.
Answer: One micro rice DOES NOT feed two adults!

Hope that helps!

My diabetic nurse says that two tablespoons (flat, not heaped) is the right size serving of rice, potato, pasta etc.

It was a bit of a lightbulb moment for this carb hungry veggie who would sit and eat a whole plate of pasta with a veg based sauce thinking it was healthy Blush

lengthenmylutealphase · 06/02/2020 11:47

Depends on size of rice, how much chilli or curry is with it, how hungry the person is, what else they've eaten that day, how big they are, how much exercise they've done that day.

EmmiJay · 06/02/2020 11:51

I lift weights. I get hungry. I can eat one of those (the spicy mexican rice by uncle ben - drool!) on its own!

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 06/02/2020 11:54

I don’t use microwave rice at home but In holiday cottages when doing extra lazy dinners, we do use the pouches but 1 each for me and dh, dc have 1/2 a pouch each.

I am not a borrower In size so would actually like a good portion of dinner. I don’t snack really so it’s 3 meals a day and I want my food!

I don’t think I’m greedy and no I’m not fat due to my rice habit

Ponoka7 · 06/02/2020 11:55

It's 400 calories and around 90g of carbs. So like everything else, it depends on what you have/are eating for the rest of the day.

I like Naan, so would have less rice. Portion size has given me weight issues. Even without the weight issues, the over consumption of carbs is killing us.

So it's how you balance it all out.

madcatsforever · 06/02/2020 11:57

1/2 a pack is plenty for me but my DH eats a full one so I always end up with half a pack going to waste.... Still better than boiling my own though when I always end up with enough to feed everyone in Hong Kong and waste a LOT 😂

EvilPea · 06/02/2020 11:58

I love those pouches, no more rice stuck at the bottom of saucepans. No steamy kitchen plus all the lovely flavours etc. If your a big family it’s not cost effective. Small I think it can be (if your getting the ones with chickpeas, pumpkin seeds, quinoa etc).

But I agree it’s not 2 portions.
2/3’s is just enough. 1/2 too little, 1 too much.

oldfashionedtastingtea · 06/02/2020 12:02

Both DH and I would eat half a portion of rice each... at most! We don't do big dinners. Instead we do gigantic lunches so not so hungry at dinner time.

Surely the "normal" portion of rice can only be measured when you know what someone eats and exercises throughout theday?

CameFromAway · 06/02/2020 12:17

It's OK for two people as long as there's plenty of curry and dhal.

TheSoapyFrog · 06/02/2020 12:21

I can share a pack of micro rice with my 5 year old son. My partner is a bottomless pit and needs a full pack to himself.

Gertrudesgarden · 06/02/2020 12:23

One cup of basmatic rice with one and a half cups of water, steamed for 20 mins, make enough rice for dinner for two adults here, with another portion left to use the next day. If turned into egg fried rice with loads of veggies, it'll feed two of us happily.

LaurieFairyCake · 06/02/2020 12:23

We share one but with a MOUNTAIN of whatever veggie sauce it is - curry/chilli/Thai- a huge heap of veg

No sides either. No bloody parathas near me in the shops (drives me spare)

LuluBellaBlue · 06/02/2020 12:23

1 packet each as half is never enough

Gertrudesgarden · 06/02/2020 12:24

Lol at basmatic rice!

ALHanes2 · 06/02/2020 12:25

Half a packet? My god, I am full after a mere forkful

I usually take a single grain from a packet of micro rice, season it and that’s me done for dinner - stuffed! Grin

MadeleineMaxwell · 06/02/2020 12:26

1 between 2 adults here, but we're watching portion sizes. If making fresh, I weigh out 70-80g dry each and that's a fair bit more. If you've got plenty of protein and veg, maybe some pulses in the curry or whatever, then it's perfectly fine.

SunshineAngel · 06/02/2020 12:30

I do sometimes get UB's microwave rice packets, as there's times when I just cannot be bothered cooking properly, and I feel it's a much better option than getting takeout! And I've always got frozen curries/chillies in the freezer as I make extra portions, so ping one of them and a rice and we're sorted.

It does say on the back that one pack provides 2 portions, but to be perfectly honest me and DP can happily eat a full portion of sauce and chicken, full bag of rice, 4 poppadoms and a naan bread .. and still have another snack with a brew later.

That MIGHT explain why we're both gaining a little weight though.

But honestly, I just don't feel like half a bag is enough, and I shouldn't be getting to the end of the meal and literally still feeling hungry!

SaskiaRembrandt · 06/02/2020 12:31

Seasoning? That's incredibly fattening. No wonder there's an obesity crisis with people like you guzzling black pepper.

I only have half a grain with no seasoning, but I always leave some because it's so filling.

Saisong · 06/02/2020 12:41

I'm going against the grain here (see what I did there), but when I have used micro rice then I would use 1 packet between 2 adults and 2 preteens. I'm assuming I must serve more of the main part of the meal to make this adequate for 4 normally proportioned people? I do recall making 2 packs once and it was too much. I don't use the micro packs any more because of the waste, and I've got used to doing it on the hob (20 mins and leave to absorb with the lid on). I use one regular mug of rice between us + double the quantity of water.

goodwinter · 06/02/2020 12:44

@LisbethSalander07 I can't even visualise what 2 flat tablespoons of potato would look like as a serving. Maybe one small new potato?

Branleuse · 06/02/2020 12:48

yes one pack between 2 people as a side dish
