One Micro Rice Should Feed Two Adults

One packet of microwave rice, when served as a side to, say, chilli or curry, should serve two adults.

Your votes, please.

Bloody expensive way to buy rice!

I don’t know what the portion size is, but I allow roughly 100g each for me and dh, for our one cooked meal of the day.

For some I dare say 75g would be enough, but we rarely have more than one course, or puddings, cakes or biscuits.

Rhubarbncustard4 · 06/02/2020 12:54

I share 1 with 2 tween sons - they also have naan bread / prawn crackers

Grembolina · 06/02/2020 12:59

I agree with the 2 packs between 3 people. It's horrible anyway, has a funny taste.

MorganKitten · 06/02/2020 13:00

They feed two but are gross

lynsey91 · 06/02/2020 13:02

Rarely use microwave rice but when we do one pack is enough between me and DH.

Mind you I am not keen on rice at all so am not bothered if the portion is small. When we eat out at an indian restaurant I never have rice just bread which always seems to horrify the waiters!

MummytoCSJH · 06/02/2020 13:03

As a side with curry/chicken/whatever it'll serve two. If you're eating the whole thing from the pack in your short lunch break or as a snack however... Grin

Dozer · 06/02/2020 13:04

50p or so a pack: not that expensive.

Depends how many calories you want to consume! 200 cals or so in a half pack.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/02/2020 13:12

But it's expensive compared with cooking normal rice.

We usually only buy the flavoured or multigrain versions to have instead of rice from the takeaway or meal deal from M&S - means we can get more interesting sides than pilau rice such as bhajis, samosas or a garlic naan - things that cost more and take more effort to make at home.

MrsToothyBitch · 06/02/2020 13:17

I use the vee-tee 100g pots if I'm having rice for lunch at work with a small cup of home made veggie curry. They're a 1 person helping and I think they're quite a generous lunch. Whole thing clocks in at around 240 calories for lunch on MFP and I think they taste quite nice. I would give one to an adult or mostly grown teen as standard unless they had a very dainty appetite! Probably would split it between DC depending on ages and appetite.

I cook 100g loose rice for 2 meals when I put it in (eggless) kedgeree though, there's lots of veg & fish there to bulk it out so don't need loads.

squeekums · 06/02/2020 13:17

I can't even visualise what 2 flat tablespoons of potato would look like as a serving. Maybe one small new potato?

It would look like sadness

Stravapalava · 06/02/2020 13:19

When we use them, the packet will serve two - DH has about 2/3 and I have about 1/3.

safariboot · 06/02/2020 13:20

I wouldn't know. I boil our rice. And always basmati rather than long-grain.

onionface · 06/02/2020 13:22

Microwave rice has a strange taste and texture.

I do 75g rice per person for a reasonable sized but not huge portion. That's the portion size on a packet of rice and is apparently 180g when cooked. Which is 3/4 of a pack of microwave rice.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/02/2020 13:28

So I suppose the big question that this thread has failed to answer is that why do rice packets come in a size that doesn't match recommended portion size and most people agree is too much for one but not quite enough for two?

Uncle Ben, I want answers.

Branleuse · 06/02/2020 13:31

I have never had an issue with the texture of microwave rice, but then i think im just terrible at cooking rice the normal way

NameChange84 · 06/02/2020 13:31

My diabetic nurse says that two tablespoons (flat, not heaped) is the right size serving of rice, potato, pasta etc.

That’s certainly what I go for in terms of servings and the advice I’ve been recommended. There’s a strong family history of Diabetes, Heart Disease and Hypothyroidism so it’s made me more cautious to stick to portion sizes.

I tend to have one to one and a half potatoes halved (so two or three halves). 50g dry weight of rice. 65g dry weight pasta. I often spiralise some vegetables to put in with spaghetti to bulk it out. Eat brown rice and chickpea or lentil pastas as I have Coeliac Disease. I honestly find that filling enough. And promise it’s not competitive undereating or “sad”.

Hobbesmanc · 06/02/2020 13:31

Gosh rice snobs. I have never been able to cook decent rice so the Micro options are a total godsend- and I really like some of the mixed grain or quinoa versions- One packet between two though is ample as a side

Thymelord · 06/02/2020 13:32

Packet each here. Often 3 packs between 2 of us.

NameChange84 · 06/02/2020 13:32

With the microwave rice you need to factor in the use of oil too in the ingredients which automatically puts the calories and fat up significantly. That comes into play with the recommended healthy serving size.

DiegoSaber · 06/02/2020 13:35

Gosh rice snobs

Rice snobbiness is the weirdest thing too. Rice is extremely bland. Mostly it just takes the flavour of whatever you eat it with. The consistency is pretty much the same if you cook it the right amount of time for whatever device you're using. So who gives a shit?

It's bizarre the things people will get snobby about.

Stravapalava · 06/02/2020 13:38

@BarbaraofSeville so you have to buy more than 1 packet so the company make more money!

MrsSiriusBlack1 · 06/02/2020 13:41

Is this a thread about a thread? 🙄

moolady1977 · 06/02/2020 13:46

We use 2 packets for 3 of us ,2 adults both working and a 15 yr old dsd who has a bigger appetite than both of us. We try to only use them during week for quickness though to go with a quick curry/chilli ,my ds21 could eat a full pack with a double serving of what we were having then go looking for sweet stuff but he is 6'3 and works a manual job and won't eat at dinner time (midday)

MAFIL · 06/02/2020 13:48

Two packets do four in our house, though they don't get split equally 4 way.DH will probably have about 3/4 I will have just over 1/4 and my teenage boys have just under a half each.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 06/02/2020 13:54

Personally I value my time more than the cost of a microwaveable packet of rice 😂
