To not get the panic about Corona Virus?

speakout · 24/01/2020 21:52

I am not getting it- can someone explain?

Less than 1000- people infected, 26 dead. Why the hype?
I understand a few pharma companies making anti virals have made a stack of money in the past week.
In global health terms these stats are insignificant surely.
Why all the headlines?
I suspect we have many pathogens jumping species barriers on a regular basis, most probably fade away and don' t make headlines.

Can someone explain.

Secrecy and lack of proper facts is just what you expect from China

TheGlaikitRambler · 27/01/2020 13:45

China health authorities in Wuhan as of 4.30pm, Bangkok time released figures showing the death toll is now 91, with one new death in the province of Hainan (an 80 year old woman) and the rest in Hubei. The number of infected has risen to 2874 with many new cases emerging in Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing. The authorities said that 426 individuals were in critical condition while more than 32,175 people were under observations.

Anti vaxxers are a serious problem.

Skyejuly · 27/01/2020 16:51

Oh blimey.

Aridane · 27/01/2020 17:00

Wonder how those presenting can be treated. ABs won't work. Does anyone know?

Yes

WHO recommend to treat as for cold - paracetamol and ibuprofen for fever, plenty of fluids and rest.

There is also advice on how to reduce the risk of getting it and if you have it, how to reduce the risk of it spreading (Plus additional protocols for carers / medical staff)

We were planning to travel to Japan for two weeks in April. We are now hesitating because we don’t know how bad this is going to get. Is anyone else rethinking travel to S.E. Asia?

Aridane · 27/01/2020 17:23

I am travelling to the Philippines, China, Korea and Japan for a 2 month period, starting beginning April - all of which have confirmed cases.

What do people make of the doctors breaking down videos? Fake news? www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7934751/Shocking-footage-shows-medic-Wuhan-crying-screaming-anymore.html
-apologies for DF Link--

I'm not really worried but was bit freaked out with the Swine flue as I was pregnant at the time. But the measure taken in China do seem very serious indeed. Not sure what to make of it tbh.

Borderline suicidal in China

The Mail twice caveats that it’s unverified

I have no idea

The Mail.

goose1964 · 28/01/2020 00:59

It makes me wonder what's not getting into the news.

abbekusum · 28/01/2020 06:58

"Less than 1000- people infected, 26 dead."
These numbers slightly out of date

"Why the hype?"
Particular news headlines worded to sell papers/tv adverts.

"I understand a few pharma companies making anti virals have made a stack of money in the past week."
Unlikely, given there's no effective antivirals for coronavirus and none on the horizon.

"In global health terms these stats are insignificant surely."
At the moment: possibly.

"Why all the headlines?"
See above.

"I suspect we have many pathogens jumping species barriers on a regular basis, most probably fade away and don' t make headlines."
Yes, but don't have the ability to transmit efficiently between humans.

Aridane · 28/01/2020 12:25

@Iggity - are you booked and paid for?

Iggity · 28/01/2020 12:43

@Aridane no haven’t booked anything yet.

Suspected case in Birmingham now (obviously could be nothing, but shows how seriously the authorities are taking this)

Early study on the R0 of Wuhan coronavirus

meredithgrey1 · 28/01/2020 17:38

That article from the sun about the man in birmingham says he returned from China on dec 31st. Given the incubation period I'm surprised (but reassured) they're taking it so seriously, it seems pretty unlikely he has it unless he's been ill for two weeks and didn't think to mention it to anyone.

justdeckingthehalls1 · 28/01/2020 18:19

I think he had been ill but has now recovered. My reading of it is that he went to the GP concerned he may have been infected and that contact tracing might be needed, rather than because he was still unwell. I'm not sure what there would be to gain by quarantining him now, but that appears to be what they've decided to do.

Harpingon · 28/01/2020 18:26

I don't think anyone who's fit and healthy needs to worry too much but the elderly and sick probably do have grounds to be concerned. My daughter is immune suppressed due to medication and upper respiratory tract infections could be deadly.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 28/01/2020 18:36

The suspect case in birmingham is so close to my childrens school it has panicked me a bit.

3 reasons...

  1. if we were to go into isolation due to being ill would we all be separated, my children would not cope. Particularly my 3 year old who has a phobia of drs.
  1. My Dp has really bad asthma, he has been hospitalised when a cold started a 3 day asthma attack, the drs and nurses could barely control it!
  1. My eldest dds dad has kidney failure and a rejected kidney. He is so poorly now every day is a blessing...this would most certainly kill him.
letmeinthroughyourwindow · 28/01/2020 22:29

The foreign office has now warned Britons against travel to anywhere in mainland China, not just Hubei province as previously.

PopcornAcademic · 29/01/2020 07:29

BA suspends flights to and from mainland China.

@mumsnet It would be good to have a designated forum where to find all coronavirus threads.

Aridane · 29/01/2020 07:40

Bugger - there go my booked and paid for BA flights!
