To not get the panic about Corona Virus?

speakout · 24/01/2020 21:52

I am not getting it- can someone explain?

Less than 1000- people infected, 26 dead. Why the hype?
I understand a few pharma companies making anti virals have made a stack of money in the past week.
In global health terms these stats are insignificant surely.
Why all the headlines?
I suspect we have many pathogens jumping species barriers on a regular basis, most probably fade away and don' t make headlines.

Can someone explain.

I watch the walking dead, I’m full prepared for when it comes

I'm prepared to go full Michonne.

UYScuti · 26/01/2020 22:13

Anyone voicing opposition to the regime are not treated very well in China. If you comply with the regime you can basically do what you like
you are owned and controlled by the state, you can only do whatever the state lets you do...is that how you define 'you can basically do what you like'?

SpecLosers · 26/01/2020 22:24

UYScuti

Yes. There are millions of Chinese tourists around the world now with endless funds it seems.

Take off the blinkers.

It will be another swine flu situation. Then we all became immune and have probably had a strain of swine flu at some point. I had it when it first came about and here I am. Just like when the common cold first came around, now we regularly suffer from colds. I think we should take precaution but I wouldnt let it stress you out to a point nobody will step outside.

Hadenoughofitall441 · 26/01/2020 22:29

@QueenOfOversharing 😂😂

Nah I’m more like Daryl, 😂😂

QueenOfOversharing · 26/01/2020 22:32

@Hadenoughofitall441 don't you get fucked off at your hair always in one eye? We can team up - have you seen me with a katana?

Hadenoughofitall441 · 26/01/2020 22:36

@QueenOfOversharing
😂 but have you seen me with a bow and arrow 😂 totally off topic 🤦🏼‍♀️😊

WatchingFriendsOnRepeat · 26/01/2020 22:37

I’m worried because I’m due to give birth in 7 weeks and have an auto-immune disease. The baby and I nearly died over Xmas/NYE because of flu. Now I hear about this virus, which is apparently worse than flu, and yes I am concerned for my health and my unborn baby’s health now but also when I go into hospital to have the baby I’m worried the hospital will be full of the virus and it won’t be safe for me or my newborn son. And of course my 4yr old son.

BunsyGirl · 26/01/2020 22:41

There are some videos on CNN which CNN is saying that they believe to be genuine as they have analysed the accents. They show tents being set up outside a hospital and a large queue of people waiting to be seen with a nurse shouting instructions at them. I think that a lot more than a 1000 people are infected. On a personal level I am worried about the number of Chinese children at my DS’ school. As more than two weeks have passed since term began and the boarders returned I am hoping that means we are in the clear.

Lulu49 · 26/01/2020 22:45

My friend lives in Shanghai and he says it’s a lot of fuss over what amounts to a bit of a cold

Ben Kavanagh is working as a teacher in Wuhan - the city under quarantine as the deadly coronavirus continues to spread across China He told us he was planning to venture out of his home one last time today to buy food and essential supplies before being stuck in his flat for the duration of the lockdown.
He took his phone along to film it all for us.
China's health minister has also warned that the virus is 'getting stronger'. 56 people have now died and more than 2,000 are infected - with many of those infected not yet displaying symptoms.

UYScuti · 26/01/2020 23:10

I can see how life would quickly be reduced to a constant and overriding preoccupation with where to find food and whether you've got enough to last

QueenOfOversharing · 27/01/2020 05:08

@Hadenoughofitall441 I love seeing you astride your motorbike. 🏍🥴 Your bow & arrow skills are incredible 🏹

QueenOfOversharing · 27/01/2020 05:10

@Hadenoughofitall441 we may need to start a TWD thread for this. 🤷🏼‍♀️😂 Oh & when does season re-start??? So far from topic I've forgotten what it was. 😬

missyoumuch · 27/01/2020 05:17

They show tents being set up outside a hospital and a large queue of people waiting to be seen with a nurse shouting instructions at them.

That doesn’t mean they’re all infected with the virus. If I had a relative especially if elderly who had symptoms I’d be rushing them to the clinic to be checked also.

abbekusum · 27/01/2020 05:30

May I point MN readers to an excellent post on ProMedmail; which puts the 2019-nCoV spread in perspective.
Basically the current analysis is that there’s a number of different transmission scenarios that make up the estimate of R0. As with SARS, there are super-spreader events and non-transmission events (the latter likely to be the severe cases). There is a suggestion that severe cases are age-related, with mild or asymptomatic infection in the youngest.

Here's what they are doing here in the US, if anyone is interested.

It looks like at this point they're restricting flights coming from Wuhan to the US to five airports, and the passengers are all being examined for symptoms.

GorkyMcPorky · 27/01/2020 06:56

@HelenBranswell was recommended on another thread for an informed perspective on Twitter. I'm also finding @DrDenaGrayson helpful too. It's alarming.

Ellamar · 27/01/2020 07:16

Sky news this morning are saying 80 have now passed away in china and 762 new cases confirmed. There was Chinese new year dragon parade going though the streets of Manchester yesterday. There was so many people attending events like these are worrying.

BuckingFrolics · 27/01/2020 07:17

I don't get the panic either. It's hysteria.

Plus there are far too many humans on the planet and a decimation would be a very positive thing for the world long term.

Aglet · 27/01/2020 07:31

Paraphrasing here. If you can keep your head while all around are losing theirs, you clearly have not understood the severity of the situation.

Skyejuly · 27/01/2020 07:32

That video is surreal seeing it so empty. Worrying.

cologne4711 · 27/01/2020 08:22

Plus there are far too many humans on the planet and a decimation would be a very positive thing for the world long term

Well that'ts true but only if it doesn't affect you and yours, right? "Decimation" only happens to other people - until it doesn't.

amispeakingenglish · 27/01/2020 08:34

Watch the footage coming out of China on line, not the official stuff. I don't believe the news at all. There are far far more dead etc. Chinese doctors and nurses are overwhelmed and are crying. One nurse said don't trust the government. One doc dead from EXHAUSTION
Dead lining the corridors, people keeling over in the streets...... This is how the end of the world starts.

amispeakingenglish · 27/01/2020 08:38

PS. All my lot can use a bow and arrow, and we have some, real ones not toys, also a machete found in my garden! So am totally with all the Michonne and Daryl's out there, also can ride a horse..... Carol is amazing
