To not get the panic about Corona Virus?

speakout · 24/01/2020 21:52

I am not getting it- can someone explain?

Less than 1000- people infected, 26 dead. Why the hype?
I understand a few pharma companies making anti virals have made a stack of money in the past week.
In global health terms these stats are insignificant surely.
Why all the headlines?
I suspect we have many pathogens jumping species barriers on a regular basis, most probably fade away and don' t make headlines.

Can someone explain.

I mean do you want me to lie about his profession or gender or marital status? You had a question. I asked DH. I literally typed out the answer as he spoke. I don’t see what the need for the sarcasm is!

speakout · 24/01/2020 22:18

I appreciate big pharma doesn't "care". But some companies have seen share prices skyrocket in he past week, making many millions in just a few days.
Worth the hype for those individuals surely.

Are we ignoring the consultant in infection diseases then, because he's married to a MNer? PMSL

I'm not panicking on a personal level - what's the point? I look at the state of our NHS and wonder how the hospitals/GP services would cope with a widespread epidemic of a slightly-nastier-than-usual flu, though.

Reallybadidea · 24/01/2020 22:21

Your Mathes are way out

Well maybe, I am tipsy to be fair. But the world population is 7.5 billion. 10% of that is 750 million and 2.6% of that is 19.5 million by my reckoning.

tobee · 24/01/2020 22:21

Yeah I'm absolutely fucking stupid to have any concerns at all when my Dh is highly immunosuppressed.

If he chances to contract it and dies I'm sure I'll just shrug my shoulders and say "oh well! Just one of those things!"

YungMAMA · 24/01/2020 22:21

Im no expert but, if the virus has arrived on 3 continents its likely that more than 800 people are infected.

Thelnebriati · 24/01/2020 22:21

It looks like you need someone to explain mansplaining to you as well as how pandemics work.

Normanpriceisnotarolemodel · 24/01/2020 22:22

Here is what the World Health Organisation have to say. www.who.int/news-room/detail/23-01-2020-statement-on-the-meeting-of-the-international-health-regulations-(2005)-emergency-committee-regarding-the-outbreak-of-novel-coronavirus-(2019-ncov)

They seem to be taking it fairly seriously, if not unanimous on declaring a pandemic on this day.

Two of my husband’s colleagues who attended a sales meeting with their Chinese colleagues in Barcelona last week are now in hospital.

But yeah, carry on with your Big Pharma conspiracy. If anyone, it’s those folks who sell those face masks who are caning it in.

TheFaerieQueene · 24/01/2020 22:24

There is some serious misunderstanding on this thread. Whilst no one can be sure how this will pan out, it would be a fool to think it is nothing. As for the big pharma tropes 😣

3luckystars · 24/01/2020 22:27

@ HuloBeraal
I am grateful for that information, thank you.

HuloBeraal · 24/01/2020 22:28

I’ll pass it on to DH. He’s grumpy because a grant application got rejected.

tobedtoMNandfart · 24/01/2020 22:30

Since you accuse me of ignorance I must assume your OP was feigned ignorance?
I'm out. Since you have been rude to at least 2 responders I can only guess you are in a combative mood?

Babynamechangerr · 24/01/2020 22:38

hulo thanks to your husband for the information.

I am concerned because based on actual footage of what seems to be going on in Wuhan on twitter this is a lot more serious than is being conveyed in MSM.

I have also got a newborn baby and it's usually the very young and very old who are most vulnerable.

I live in London, so if this does spread in the UK it will be the large metropolitan areas that are the worst affected.

BirdieFriendReturns · 24/01/2020 22:39

I’m looking forward to the time off work.

Wehttam · 24/01/2020 22:40

Let’s all reconvene here in one week and see just how this whole thing will play out. My money is on it becoming quite the global catastrophe if the news leaking out of China is anything to go by. It would be wise to keep eyes on the news and twitter as to how things could potentially spiral.

NotTerfNorCis · 24/01/2020 22:41

Have to admit I'm finding it hard to get worked up about it. I can remember all the fuss about swine flu and bird flu which both came to nowt. The media likes to hype these things.

DiegoSaber · 24/01/2020 22:45

My money is on it becoming quite the global catastrophe if the news leaking out of China is anything to go by

What news would that be?

Magicpaintbrush · 24/01/2020 22:47

According to google regular flu kills 56,000 people globally a year.

GoodDogBellaBoo · 24/01/2020 22:48

@HuloBeraal I also say thanks to your husband for the information, op is rude and obviously wanted a discussion and not real answers.

eurochick · 24/01/2020 22:49

I also heard something to suggest that an unusually high percentage of the infected required intensive care/respiratory care with this virus compared to others. So the survival rate for a small number of infected was relatively high. But if huge numbers are infected hospitals would be overwhelmed and unable to offer the same level of care to everyone. I find that concerning.

This was just from a news source so I can't confirm the veracity. Perhaps our expert mansplainerWink can comment?

Porta6 · 24/01/2020 22:49

Well maybe, I am tipsy to be fair.
Probably the best way to be, to be honest.

sage46 · 24/01/2020 22:50

Thanks for passing on your husband's information. Are men not allowed to be experts now?

Thelnebriati · 24/01/2020 22:51

I had swine flu. I hope I don't come into contact with coronavirus because this time round I'll be at a higher risk.

BellatrixLestat · 24/01/2020 22:51

I work with Chinese nationals on a daily basis (students). Many of whom have just flown back to the UK from visiting home over Christmas.

I'm a little concerned, on that basis. But those numbers, although seemingly high are a tiny tiny fraction of the population of Wuhan alone, so I think WHO is on alert, being a novel virus. but I don't think it's as bad as it is being portrayed in the media.
