To not get the panic about Corona Virus?

speakout · 24/01/2020 21:52

I am not getting it- can someone explain?

Less than 1000- people infected, 26 dead. Why the hype?
I understand a few pharma companies making anti virals have made a stack of money in the past week.
In global health terms these stats are insignificant surely.
Why all the headlines?
I suspect we have many pathogens jumping species barriers on a regular basis, most probably fade away and don' t make headlines.

Can someone explain.

How awful Pigsmightfly, I'm not surprised you'd be a bit panicky.

Hadenoughofitall441 · 30/01/2020 15:10

Although they like to scaremonger as soon as something like this happens, I feel like the Chinese have not declared everything. I’m not worried I’m the slightest, it’s a bit suspect how quickly they supposedly built a hospital. I feel like they’ve know about it longer. I’m worried for others with certain medical issues, my immunity is pretty good for someone with an underlying medical condition ( she says as she’s sitting here dealing with a virus of some kind) the problem is a lot of people won’t take it too seriously because of all the media attention other diseases have received and have turned out not that bad. Someone asked me today if I was okay, I said I haven’t got the chinese plague so I’ll be fine. And we joke about it. I’ve seen the countless memes already, I’ve no issues with dying, only how my kids will manage after I’m gone but if we all get it together it won’t be a problem.

mansviewpoint · 30/01/2020 15:19

There is no real need to be worried about the Corona virus, unless you live in impoverished conditions and in a major city, then you should be slightly concerned about meeting people who are ill and have just come back from a non hotspot (basically 1 city in China) apart from that it's just media blowing it out of the water. of course in the longer term then this will be the same as swine flu, where there is a non antibody to help, but people still die because of other pre-existing conditions.

FredaFrogspawn · 30/01/2020 15:54

Manspoint - that was awesome mansplaining because you give no explanation really just tell us this is what this is. Your tone was perfectimundo. Go on, dig deeper, and get some evidence for your opinion-given-as-fact.

helpagirloutplease · 30/01/2020 15:55

I think most people are concerned

ChardonnaysDistantCousin · 30/01/2020 16:10

Of course no one should be concerned, it’s not like whole cities are in quarantine and borders closed and flights suspended.

No, the reason to be concerned whatsoever, says the man.

Shall we close the thread now? All sorted.

SueEllenMishke · 30/01/2020 16:12

I'm quite concerned as both me and DH work at universities which have large Chinese student population many of which have been returning to the UK for the new term...not to mention the number of my colleagues who spent time in china at the start of the month teaching ( some in or near to Wuhan Province)
This will be replicated at universities across the uk.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 30/01/2020 16:26

It’s the long incubation period that concerns me the most. The risk of bringing it into your home or infecting your loved ones is greater, because of that. I must be talking to very different people than some of the posters on here, because most people I talk to are concerned about it. No one is panicking but a lot of people are watching to see how this plays out. The fact that non residents are still not being permitted to leave, is very concerning. Can anyone tell me if that happened when the other viruses mentioned, were spreading?

agonyauntie2020 · 30/01/2020 16:44

Love how you know better than the CDC, WHO and entire governments of countries.

Thanks for the mansplain but are you on the right forum?

BellatrixLestat · 30/01/2020 16:45

I'm in a similar situation to @SueEllenMishke. This week I have been face to face with several people who have returned to the UK from Wuhan and the Hubei region in the last few weeks.

AmelieTaylor · 30/01/2020 16:54

My friend lives in Shanghai and he says it’s a lot of fuss over what amounts to a bit of a cold

Oh well, between him & mans irwpojnt, we can tell the international specialists to have a bit of a rest, their work isn’t required 🙄

PotholeParadise · 30/01/2020 17:29

Two teams of researchers have put the typical incubation period at roughly five days, but it can be as long as 14.

If they returned around two weeks ago, or more, you're safe.

Thescrewinthetuna · 30/01/2020 20:25

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-51318246 it is now a global health emergency according to WHO

corythatwas · 30/01/2020 21:13

SIL got out on the last flight from Shanghai. On arrival (other European country) drove straight to isolated cottage in the countryside where she is planning to quarantine herself until incubation period is over (local shop delivers to the door). Very relieved to know she is home.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 30/01/2020 21:32

You’re sil sounds wonderfully sensible and considerate. I hope she’s keeping in Daley young with friends or relatives, just in case she does take ill?

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 30/01/2020 21:32

daily contact*

corythatwas · 30/01/2020 22:00

Thank you T0tally, I am sure she will be. Her husband and teen sons are within a couple of hours travel to her, but there is a village and a lifeboat (she's on an island) as well as a shop. No doubt she will be skyping the family daily. She is indeed a lovely person and I am so sorry for all the stress she's had: she only went to Shanghai to see her dad who was seriously ill in hospital (nothing infectious).

yolofish · 30/01/2020 22:14

Hmm. I hadnt really thought much about it, given that we live very rurally. However, DD2 is currently commuting daily from home into London (train & tube) while on her uni placement year. DH is immuno compromised as on chemo. She has said if/when it hits the UK she will not do the commute and will have to work from home. Actually, I think she's right.

DD1 and I had both had swine flu at the same time, which involved spending 10 days in bed together literally feeling as if we wanted to die while DH looked after DD2 and the animals. And then it took us a good 4 weeks afterwards to be 'normal'.

I would prefer to avoid any of that for DH on chemo, post life-changing surgery.
DD1

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 30/01/2020 22:14

Oh, that sounds really tough and with her dad being ill, she must miss and need her family more than ever. I hope her dad has improved, but being in hospital there must be scary at the minute.

yolofish · 30/01/2020 22:32

thank you TOtally he's actually on a tablet regime so not in hospital, but she's anxious - understandably.

Cory I hope your SIL is ok.

I heard that there is a cruise ship in quarantine in Rhodes - no one allowed off, one (or poss two) Chinese passengers unwell.

Ellamar · 31/01/2020 09:44

Two people have tested positive in the uk I dread to think of all of the people they came in to contact with.

letmeinthroughyourwindow · 21/03/2020 13:40

Well this seems a long time ago now.

EmeraldShamrock · 21/03/2020 14:07

Interesting zombie threads are like time capsules.
I wonder how things will be in 6 week's time.
