To not get the panic about Corona Virus?

speakout · 24/01/2020 21:52

I am not getting it- can someone explain?

Less than 1000- people infected, 26 dead. Why the hype?
I understand a few pharma companies making anti virals have made a stack of money in the past week.
In global health terms these stats are insignificant surely.
Why all the headlines?
I suspect we have many pathogens jumping species barriers on a regular basis, most probably fade away and don' t make headlines.

Can someone explain.

@amispeakingenglish horse rider here too. I'm going to learn that making fire by rubbing sticks together thing. My brother is a keen fisherman, so I'm hoping that just runs in the family. Also, my 2 dogs are *a fierce pack.

*total fucking wusses 🤷🏼‍♀️

TheGlaikitRambler · 27/01/2020 09:07

So far, it is pretty much following this chart, so I would say things are going to get a whole lot worse unless something changes!

To not get the panic about Corona Virus?
TheGlaikitRambler · 27/01/2020 09:08

And that is just with confirmed figures, which I think are massively under reported just now.

^My friend lives in Shanghai and he says it’s a lot of fuss over what amounts to a bit of a cold*

Apart from living in Shanghai, what other relevant qualifications does your friend have?

bellinisurge · 27/01/2020 09:20

Please find a way to calm yourself . I'm a general prepper and this is just another thing for me.
I have MS and am more worried about the stupid tossers in my area who have undermined measles herd immunity with their anti-vax bollocks. I have never had measles and it could kill me.
In the unlikely event this turns into something scarier to me than measles or the norovirus, I will hunker down with my family at home using my normal stuff I have as a general prepper.

Other than that? Business as usual.

speakout · 27/01/2020 09:23

Can't you have the measles vaccine?

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 27/01/2020 09:24

No. I checked. For reasons of my health, I can't.

So the vaccine is not without impact?

I didn't have my children get their MMR until they were 14.

Anti vaxxers piss me off too.

I’d be interested if @HuloBeraal husband did an AMA as it would give me more information to use, whenever I have to speak to one.

bellinisurge · 27/01/2020 09:38

It is not without impact if, like me, you are immuno compromised or have other genuine physical health problems. Otherwise you are an anti vaxxer fucking herd immunity up for people like me who rely on it.

TheGlaikitRambler · 27/01/2020 09:58

You can track the spread of the virus here ... so far our closest confirmed case is France

abbekusum · 27/01/2020 10:10

@Glaikit: where is that chart from and what are the calculations behind it?

BananaRepublic2019 · 27/01/2020 10:11

@speakout
So the vaccine is not without impact?

My DD has an autoimmune condition, so is on immune-suppressant drugs. She cannot have any live vaccines as she would develop the condition and potentially die. If you have a healthy immune system, the vaccine will protect you. If you have a suppressed immune system, the bugs could kill you.

speakout · 27/01/2020 10:21

BananaRepublic2019

But this it what I mean.
And your DDs condition is not the only one that can be impacted by the vaccine.

Vaccines do cause problems in some people.

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 27/01/2020 10:46

The vaccine causes problems for people who already have challenging health conditions - it does not "cause problems " if you don't.

That's just not true.

The UK government has a Vaccine Damage Payment fund.

No pharmaceutical product is 100% safe. And that includes vaccines.

@TheGlaikitRambler

The scariest thing about that map is that out of 2794 cases only 54 people have fully recovered so far Shock.

off to panic buy loo roll and baked beans

HuloBeraal · 27/01/2020 11:01

Women’s Hour did an hour long programme answering questions on vaccinations led by people more senior than DH. It was really informative. Have a listen!

LittleRen · 27/01/2020 11:03

But to recover from flu or even a bad cold can sometimes take 10 days or more so it’s not surprising.

bellinisurge · 27/01/2020 11:27

Op, if you are an anti vaxxer, I have no idea how you can have any sensible response to anything to do with viruses.

speakout · 27/01/2020 11:36

I am not an "anti vaccer".

Yes my children didn't have their mMR until they were 14, but I am not anti vaccine.
I am simply saying that vaccines are not without risks.

Dude, I'm getting a bingo card out over here, from the speed you leapt on bellini's post.

Vaccine Damage Payment Fund - check

HuloBeraal · 27/01/2020 12:53

Everything has risks. Paracetamol has some really serious risks. As does ibuprofen. You can have a really serious allergic reaction that sends you to intensive care.
Many many antibiotics have some serious side effects.
It is unclear to me why people fixate on vaccines.

(I know why. It’s because it’s needle administered. If it was administered by mouth I am willing to bet there would be much less panic. In the US where we lived for a bit all kids get the flu jabs and it’s a school requirement. I asked them why they didn’t get the spray and they told me it was because it was much much less effective. But I am pretty sure that the NHS uses the spray because there is so much fear mongering over injected vaccines that flu vaccination rates for kids would fall if they did).

Skyejuly · 27/01/2020 13:18

I don't usually freak out but the secrecy, and knowing we don't have proper facts is worrying me.
