To not get the panic about Corona Virus?

speakout · 24/01/2020 21:52

I am not getting it- can someone explain?

Less than 1000- people infected, 26 dead. Why the hype?
I understand a few pharma companies making anti virals have made a stack of money in the past week.
In global health terms these stats are insignificant surely.
Why all the headlines?
I suspect we have many pathogens jumping species barriers on a regular basis, most probably fade away and don' t make headlines.

Can someone explain.

With the two videos on reddit this morning of nurses in the area begging people to stay indoors at all costs, asking for supplies, in tears over the number of dead they have dealt with alone and voicing how not to trust the government... Yea I'm scared. They shut down cities. They have been trying to silence journalists far too long about this.

Husband is travelling via plane tomorrow to a place that has had a possible case and he's not leaving Europe... I am scared for him as his immune system hasn't been great recently. I have a team month old and a three year old girl with not great lungs so has an inhaler each night. Trying to not panic yes but I am worried

UYScuti · 26/01/2020 18:39

massively downplayed by the Chinese government. They are now panicking
the totalitarian Chinese govt is....making like a totalitarian govt
of course!

letmeinthroughyourwindow · 26/01/2020 18:46

I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned, but BBC now reporting that victims are infectious for up to 14 days before symptoms appear. Compared to outbreaks of, for example, SARS, that was only infectious once symptoms appeared. Clearly, very difficult to identify and control. Now a reported 2000 sick and 56 dead. If statistics are to be believed, a far higher mortality rate than typical flu.

I hope they keep their jobs and are not sent to the Gulags. Anyone voicing opposition to the regime are not treated very well in China. If you comply with the regime you can basically do what you like.

But maybe this issue transcends all that.

Gotaprettypup · 26/01/2020 18:47

I wondered what we are not being told, the news say a hospital is being built and expected to be built in a week...in a population as big as China the official infection reports dont justify a hospital being rapidly built...I would guess the problem is far larger than reported...or reports are inaccurate..

Aridane · 26/01/2020 18:51

OP - I tend to agree with you.

At such time as WHO declares it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) I may think differently.

Or at such time as the FCO advises against travel to swathes of Asia / elsewhere instead of just, as present, Hubei Province

Aridane · 26/01/2020 18:57

To be honest, I'm more concerned about the thousands of people who die each year of pneumonia in the UK and that until relatively recently the only European countries with higher death rates from pneumonia than the UK are Slovakia and Romania.

Or that 80 people die each day in the UK from flu and pneumonia (2014 stats

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 26/01/2020 18:58

I’m beginning to suspect they’re building a morgue at this rate! Confused

letmeinthroughyourwindow · 26/01/2020 19:12

"To be honest, I'm more concerned about the thousands of people who die each year of pneumonia in the UK and that until relatively recently the only European countries with higher death rates from pneumonia than the UK are Slovakia and Romania."

Is it the case for other chronic conditions or just pneumonia? Genuinely curious whether it's medical care or, say, lifestyle.

Aridane · 26/01/2020 19:23

I don't know - I just know we're an outlier for high deaths from pneumonia compared with other European countries. (I don't think our survival rates for other illnesses are right at the bottom of the European league tables - but then I only now about pneumonia! (and flu). But domestic deaths don't grab the headlines. So no '80 people died in the UK yesterday from pneumonia and flu'

Namechangerextraordinaire1 · 26/01/2020 19:45

I'm a little wary...I'm currently pregnant and someone I went to school with died just after her baby was born, due to complications resulting from swine flu. We live in a pretty small town, nowhere near a big city where you'd expect infection rates to be higher. Not panicking by any means, but definitely wary

cherryblossomgin · 26/01/2020 19:57

There is 2000 confirmed cases and the death toll is 56. Dundee University has a student programme with Wuhan. I'm not panicking but I am concerned.

Packingsoapandwater · 26/01/2020 20:11

The "hospital in a week" is apparently a field hospital, so a temporary structure.

This suggests they are expecting a significant number of serious cases and that the only way they can see to treat them would be in a structure that, by default, has issues in terms of bathroom and sanitation facilities.

In short, they are expecting all permanent medical facilities to be swamped.

I am concerned about it. I have a toddler that goes to preschool and the place is a vector for viruses. I will seriously consider keeping her at home if we start to see wuhan virus cases in our area.

Honeybee85 · 26/01/2020 20:16

YANBU

Many die of influenza each year and I think the number of deaths from this is significantly higher!
And I don’t worry at all about influenza.

LittleRen · 26/01/2020 20:18

I wasn’t worried but now I am since the news that people are infection during incubation. Someone in my son’s class returns from China next week so naturally I am concerned as symptoms don’t show for 14 days in some cases.

SpecLosers · 26/01/2020 20:20

Wonder how those presenting can be treated. ABs won't work. Does anyone know?

I suppose it will be intravenous fluids and nutrition or something.

Bless them all. It must be so frightening.

MrsKCastle · 26/01/2020 20:21

I am not panicking by any means, but I have been watching the news. It's interesting that the OP posted 2 days ago, mentioning 1000 infected and 56 deaths. We're now at around 2000 confirmed infections, 56 deaths and around 13? countries. The news about people possibly being infectious before they get symptoms means that it could spread very far.

I'm not worried at the moment, but I think we'll have a much better idea of the impact in a week or 10 days.

Forestwitch · 26/01/2020 20:25

Isn't this what the world wanted? Reduce the populations of the Earth?
Welcome to the life lottery!
Plenty die everyday from sepsis and other things. But no one bats an eyelid, unless it touches them or people they care for.

Shit just got real!

BengalGal · 26/01/2020 20:26

I’m concerned for the following reasons:
It’s new — no immunity, no vaccines
China is probably downplaying it but shutting down a city the size of London suggests it’s pretty bad.
Incubation period of 1 to 14 days and being contagious at that time is unusual for flu and makes it hard to contain.
We don’t really know how virulent it is yet. We need to see it in action longer. But whether it’s 1 to 2 or 1 to 1.4 the Chinese say it has become more virulent lately. Usually it’s the opposite.

I’m not personally panicking but am following it closely in the news. I would not go to China. If it gets bad I would not even fly on a long haul flight.

TheABC · 26/01/2020 20:42

I had the swine flu: it was definitely one of the more horrible illnesses I experienced.

I do think China is underplaying it, but I am not going to buy into conspiracy theories as the authorities are dealing with a new illness and have limited knowledge about it. Given the 1 billion people living there, panic could end up being much more deadly than the disease.

This virus is going to do the rounds (it's already out of China), but even at three times the levels of standard flu mortality, it's not going to demolish society like the Black Plague did (for example).

MidsomerBurgers · 26/01/2020 20:59

Three more confirmed cases in America now. Two in California and one in Arizona according to the NY Times.

Twinkled · 26/01/2020 21:00

Anyone that believes the bigoted nonsense in the Daily Fail, Express and Sun needs to read wider resources when looking for facts.

SpecLosers · 26/01/2020 21:28

Give it a week or so and it will hopefully die down. Just like the hysteria around Harry and Meghan.

GorkyMcPorky · 26/01/2020 21:41

@SpecLosers that's very flippant but o hope you're right.

SpecLosers · 26/01/2020 21:57

Going a bit off topic, but is this a wake up call for a post Brexit trade deal with China now? Just wondered.

Not that it will happen anytime soon anyway.
