to think that what Piers Morgan is doing on twitter to Meghan is harassment / stalking and he should be reported?

Fellow twitter users - I don't follow Piers Morgan on twitter but I've seen a lot of his tweets about Harry and particularly Meghan retweeted by others. I can't believe the vitriol he has for her. I've reported many of them to twitter as "targeted harassment" (one of the twitter report categories) but of course twitter has done nothing.
Surely his abusive behaviour is something that no woman should have to put up with? (but of course Meghan's hands are tied - she can't say or do anything). Why don't the police have a word? (because if someone was running that sort of campaign against me, I would be asking them to). Or at least twitter do something about him - shut him down for a couple of weeks maybe?

ITV must have rules or at least a CSR team? Maybe advertisers should consider whether they want their brands to be connected to a prime time bullying campaign?

You'd think.

The problem is that viewing figures remain high.

The law should be tightened up to ensure this kind of thing isn't allowed. Having free reign to whip up hate like this is a dreadful influence on society.

LaurieMarlow · 20/01/2020 10:20

I was struck by this in the Guardian article.

But there are clues. Mirror Group (now Reach) had by July 2018 set aside more than £70m to settle phone-hacking claims without risking any of them getting to court. The BBC reported last year that the Murdoch titles had paid out an astonishing £400m in damages and calculated that the total bill for the two companies could eventually reach £1bn.

The press are behaving appallingly and illegally. They're throwing money at it to make it go away. It's not being reported widely because its not in their interests to do so. And they're getting away with it.

MummyJasmin · 20/01/2020 10:23

I agree. He has an unhealthy obsession with her!

derxa · 20/01/2020 10:26

I hope in a few years time the whole furore about them stepping away from the traditional royal ‘industry’ will be forgotten and they will be accepted as the modern face of a new style royalty. Absolutely right. It all needs to calm down and Harry and Meghan need to be left alone to live in peace. However that doesn't mean I approve of their behaviour. Meghan's treatment of people in her past has been quite shocking.

TatianaLarina · 20/01/2020 10:29

Meghan's treatment of people in her past has been quite shocking.

Oh I see you know her. You and Piers eh?

timetest · 20/01/2020 10:31

PM does seem obsessed but if M andH just withdrew from public life there would be nothing for him to bang on about.

GoBackHome · 20/01/2020 10:33

Have not rift, apart from page 1, but to add to Spudlet et al....

There are 2 Chancery Lane judges, whose main purpose is to preside of the settlement of case after case against the red top press for phone hacking. None of these cases is getting near a court hearing and the newspapers (Mail, Sun and Mirror) have set aside up to £1 billion in settlement monies to make sure they don't. Piers Morgan's name apparently comes up time and time again.

If I was his wife, I'd be quite concerned about his obsession with MM

derxa · 20/01/2020 10:34

Oh I see you know her. You and Piers eh? Absolutely Grin

fascicle · 20/01/2020 10:35

I am sad that people are so eager to pass up their freedom of speech, forgetting that next time it might be you that wants the right to say something , even if it is unpopular.

Unpopular is fine, as long as it can be justified and as long as it does not malign an individual. Perhaps you could explain the evidence and justification for this comment from Morgan (I can see none):

Only surprised it took her so long to get Harry to ditch his family, the Monarchy, the military and his country. What a piece of work.

TatianaLarina · 20/01/2020 10:37

Absolutely

Deluded as each other.

TatianaLarina · 20/01/2020 10:38

That Leveson 2 is being shelved is pretty grim.

Mrsjayy · 20/01/2020 10:40

If I was his wife, I'd be quite concerned about his obsession with MM

His wife is just as obsessed their conversations must be dull "I hate her" no I hate her more"

CarpeSocolatum · 20/01/2020 10:43

Piers Morgan just wants headlines and to be talked about. The irony is how much he used to have a go at Stephen Fry for being on twitter before he went to the States and realised he had to use it for his CNN show that was cancelled after three years. He has shown us who he is on many an occasion, not least when he slated Ariana Grande after the terrorist attack.

Mrsjayy · 20/01/2020 10:54

He was revolting about Ariana Grande the things he said but yet here he still is on Tv and twitter spouting bile, dressed up as "saying it as it is"

NameNumber5634521 · 20/01/2020 10:58

I accidentally turned on ITV the other day and caught the end of his rant. He is verging on lunacy over the subject.

CoolCarrie · 20/01/2020 10:59

Surely his wife must be pissed off at his behaviour, it’s weird and disturbing, he is a total arse

longwayoff · 20/01/2020 11:00

Thank you mrsjayy, conjured up worrying vision of Piers and Celia grumbling away to each other of an evening whilst watching MM on tv gogglebox-style. Like Giles and NuttyGrin only more vicious, obviously.

SirChing · 20/01/2020 11:01

Only surprised it took her so long to get Harry to ditch his family, the Monarchy, the military and his country. What a piece of work

Yep, horrible comment. Repellant though it is, people are allowed to make horrible comments.

If he can be prosecuted for harassment, sued for slander/libel, then that's brilliant - the bloke is an arsehole. But if he can't, then I don't see what grounds there are to demand he stops tweeting.

I am not totally clear on the law around what is allowed to be described as opinion and what has to legally be evidenced in order to avoid prosecution.

As I am not the person making the comment, clearly it's inappropriate to ask me for the evidence and justification. What I do know is that people spout unsubstantiated shite all the time, and whilst it's bloody horrible, that doesn't make it a crime necessarily.

Mrsjayy · 20/01/2020 11:02

I don't watch Mon-frid because he is on ranting I can imagine he comes across as a total turd

Equanimitas · 20/01/2020 11:02

And he’s only ever met her once!! Can we please let the “they were friends and she dropped him” myth go now?”

It would be a myth if we weren't talking about Piers Morgan. He is absolutely desperate to be able to claim that hordes of famous people are his friends, witness the way he is constantly dropping their names and letting us know if they so much as say "Hallo" to him. So he's furious that he can't make out that he has some sort of private hotline to the Duchess of Sussex, and that combined with his inherent misogyny, racism and general inadequacy has resulted in his current obsession.

Kazzyhoward · 20/01/2020 11:02

Trouble is that M&H have provided so much material for the likes of PM to take them to task for. The double standards and hypocracy in particular.

Whiskeylover45 · 20/01/2020 11:03

Piers Morgan is an odious little man. Block and ignore. I do feel sorry for her, but like all bullies if you ignore them they'll find someone else or thing to target

Equanimitas · 20/01/2020 11:03

SirChing, have a look at The Secret Barrister's twitter feed. They've set out why Morgan's current conduct is likely to be in breach of the protection from harassment legislation.

GoBackHome · 20/01/2020 11:06

He's like the pub bore/abusive ex-husband, obsessively banging on about the terrible bitch who broke up with him.

However, don't ban him from Twitter or anything else. Let his words speak for themselves. If you are on Twitter, remind him about the phone hacking cases and that perhaps Megan had no choice but to stand by her husband against the bloke who allegedly authorised his phone to be hacked. Remind him he may have tried to re-invent himself in the US as a talkshow host and friend to the stars, but over here, he will forever be the sad hack who helped to destroy a once great newspaper (actual news and investigative journalism from the likes of John Pilger), the Mirror.
