I am waiting with interest to find out what happens next, following on from this afternoon's talks at Sandringham.

Poor old Queen. She can't have finished the leftover turkey yet and here she is, embroiled in another crisis.

"Immigration problems" would appear to be an oxymoron for the likes of them. (Tax I suppose not so much.)

Oakenbeach · 13/01/2020 20:37

I am appalled if people think the whole of the UK are racist!

That’s the trope was being rolled out in some of the articles over the weekend, including an awful one in the New York Times.

I fully accept that black women continue to face racism, and that’s appalling. It doesn’t follow however that every time anything is said to a black or mixed-race women that isn’t reverential it is down to racism.

MrsBrentford · 13/01/2020 20:38

Dunno - my first husbands father was very high up in the military in NZ and sponsored me to live there?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 13/01/2020 20:40

Phillip leaving Sandringham today with Countess Mountbatten (aka Penny Romsey)

Won't Meghan still need a visa to live in Canada? Won't Harry need one

She probably still has her permanent resident card after living their for 7 years.
I doubt Harry will have a problem getting residency. Millionaire British Prince.

Lilybetsey · 13/01/2020 20:45

I hope Harry went to DoE’s place to say hello. I hope he didn’t leave without even seeing his ailing grandfather ...

diddl · 13/01/2020 20:46

Harry's pretty stuck if he decides he doesn't want this new life.

What about Archie?

Who would he live with?

Justmuddlingalong · 13/01/2020 20:48

Is Harry now staying in the UK until the rugby thing on Thursday, or does Elton have his shovel and gardening gloves on standby?

fallen121 · 13/01/2020 20:48

@OVienna Tax is going to be a very real problem.

An individual may also be deemed, under the “sojourning” rule in the Income Tax Act, to be a Canadian resident taxpayer for the entire calendar year in which the individual is physically present in Canada for 183 days or more in that year.

For UK individuals we are talking 90 days.

Individuals resident in Canada are subject to Canadian income tax on their worldwide income, regardless of where it is earned or where it is received.

There are 365 days in a year. If M&H can find somewhere else to live for the remaining 92 days each year that doesn't charge income tax they will be home free. Otherwise they will pay tax in both countries.

There are some clever accountants out there but Benjamin Franklin was right when he said there are only two certainties in life. Death and taxes.

MrsBrentford · 13/01/2020 20:50

It is pretty disgusting that all that money has been spent on Frogmore for it to stand empty for a lot of the year.

BillieEilish · 13/01/2020 20:51

I think, if Canada is part of the Hague Convention, as he was born here she needs his permission to take him out of and reside in the country.

I do, and I live in Spain and am not Royal Grin

I get sick of debating this on MN, along with others in the same situation that understand, but it is true and would apply to Archie (if Canada is part of the HG and if Harry wanted to enforce it, many, many divorcing parents do)

It's why I'm still in Spain.

BillieEilish · 13/01/2020 20:54

Nope, just checked, Canada is not part of the Hague Convention Sad

Bluntness100 · 13/01/2020 20:54

The fact that Meghan, and Archie, are not here supporting Harry, but he is alone dealing with this tells everyone everything,

This is not a joint decision, if it was she would be here with him, side by side, they'd be managing it together, but she's not, she's left him to go it alone.

she was never staying, the baby was left in Canada, she came back to give the erroneous impression they were in it together, quick press opportunity looking smiley and out.

Basically Meghan being away and Harry alone now tells us that this is a decision he's forced to make. She's out. And he either goes with her or he basically looses his wife and child.

And that's why the queen has supported it, and won't be punitive, she knows he has to pick his wife and child over his royal family. That that's the stark choice he had to make.

BillieEilish · 13/01/2020 20:55

Archie is wherever his mother takes him.

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 13/01/2020 20:56

I'm reminded of when I was young and silly and I left a pretty decent job, burning all my bridges behind me. Not a good word to say about the place and instead of working my notice I just didn't show up one day so I could go on holiday. A few years later my dream job came up with them but there was no way back as I had so spectacularly flounced on my way out. It was a good lesson though. I never did it again and there's been quite a few times over the years where I have breathed a sigh of relief at being able to get info or assistance from a previous colleague because I'd learned my lesson about not burning bridges. I think they'll live to regret this I really do.

BillieEilish · 13/01/2020 20:58

Bluntness is right I think.

Also sure (having faced visa battles in Canada), that the visit to Canada house, was to get visas for all. Even for Royals, there will be a lot of hoops to jump through and papers to sign.

'Thanks for the hospitality'? My arse, more like, sort us all out with visas and we'll give you some good press.

Tellmetruth4 · 13/01/2020 20:59

Pissing myself at how personally some of you are taking this. ‘How dare she leave, after all we have done for her and now she’s shown us up to the rest of the world. She should’ve taken the constant criticism with a stiff upper lip and quietly but she’s shown us up to the world!!’

This country has too many nutters. No wonder they shot through. Seriously some of you sound like proper cranks. This carry on about a family emigrating is not a good look for the UK. I’m actually embarrassed by how hysterical some people are getting about two strangers moving.

The way some of you are going on, makes me wonder how you’d carry on if people you actually knew like your family members were on ‘Wanted Down Under’. You’d be making a right show of yourselves, wailing and nashing teeth and tearing at clothes!

I don’t know why I clicked on to this thread but it’s addictive due to how personally invested some of you are. It’s fascinating.

MrsBrentford · 13/01/2020 20:59

Agree with @Bluntness100

Alsohuman · 13/01/2020 20:59

thing is - the public funded their wedding

I think you’ll find we didn’t. We paid for the security.

WendyMoiraAngelaDarling · 13/01/2020 21:00

Agree @Bluntness100. She's done with it and I think she's probably half way to being done with Harry too.

colouringinpro · 13/01/2020 21:00

ok totally speculating now, but in a custody battle, who would win?

Tellmetruth4 · 13/01/2020 21:00

Gnashing

MrsBrentford · 13/01/2020 21:00

I am way too invested in this thread Grin

I had a crap weekend and it’s making me think about my own life less Grin

kinsss · 13/01/2020 21:00

Tax liabilities are covered under the UK/Canada, and potentially UK/US Double Taxation agreements.

They will be fine tax wise with good tax advisers. The end result is that they will pay the equivalent of the highest tax charge in ONE jurisdiction depending on where that is, not both. Credits are allowed for one tax against the other.

MrsBrentford · 13/01/2020 21:01

@Alsohuman

The security cost £32 million pounds.
