To hate all the ‘reflective’ 10 years ago Facebook posts

My newsfeed is dripping with so much self congratulating bs, it’s unbearable to look at! Photo of me 10 years ago.. blah blah... Been through highs and lows..blah blah...had children, discovered myself.... Ugh it’s relentless meaningless drivel! Whatever happened to wishing a happy new year and getting on with your day?! I wouldn’t dream of boring everybody with a heavily rose tinted synopsis of the last decade - who cares?!!

OP posts:
JacquesHammer · 01/01/2020 13:28

Why do you have so many people on your newsfeed you clearly don’t like?

NorthernBirdAtHeart · 01/01/2020 13:29

YABU bringing that drivel to MN!Grin

QueenViki · 01/01/2020 13:29

They’re normally alright but today they’ve all gone completely loopy and self indulgent!

OP posts:
JacquesHammer · 01/01/2020 13:30

So they’re using their own social media how they want?

Stone them Wink

Cherrygin · 01/01/2020 13:30

Eurgh no I hate it too. Someone on my feed literally wrote a self congratulatory Oscar speech, vom inducing Envy (not envy)

QueenViki · 01/01/2020 13:31

JacquesHammer clearly you’ve done one of these posts yourself! Grin They are Oscar speeches!

I have only seen a couple and 1 was about the last year not 10. the rest re just pictures. REally don,t like scross on. Think about the real rubbish on fb.

NotACleverName · 01/01/2020 13:33

I mean, you obviously care somewhat. Since you've taken the time to post a [look at me, aren't I superior for not being like them] thread on MN about it...

SproutMuncher · 01/01/2020 13:33

Depends what they put in it - a couple of pics from 10 years ago and a couple of lines of thought, I don’t see the issue (and no I haven’t done one, I never post on FB!) I agree some are ridiculously OTT though.

puds11 · 01/01/2020 13:34

I find it odd that people are genuinely that wetConfused My sister is the worst. Some drivel about living happily ever after Hmm

JacquesHammer · 01/01/2020 13:35

JacquesHammer clearly you’ve done one of these posts yourself! grin They are Oscar speeches!

I haven’t posted on FB since 19th December sharing a post about a sport I’m into. Before that it was September Grin

I work in social media so rarely use it for myself any more. I absolutely love reading people’s posts though! Ive seen some fantastic memories shared this morning.

SproutMuncher · 01/01/2020 13:35

I agree - I prefer seeing people post about their lives do not particularly funny memes, or sharing videos of recipes or cute animals or something.

MumW · 01/01/2020 13:36

YANBU, I hate it too. Fortunately, I'm not a huge social media user so my feed has not been too bad. Maybe you could use the New Year to have a social media break and to spend some time doing a cull of all, those FB 'friends' whose lives you are no longer a part of/interested in.

WelcomeToShootingStars · 01/01/2020 13:37

Is the point of social media not to share your experiences and thoughts?

I like seeing people's happy memories.

Thelastlittledragon · 01/01/2020 13:39

I love seeing what my friends have been up to funnily enough. Hate the cat on skateboard video clips though

Honeyroar · 01/01/2020 13:40

I’m quite liking them actually, but most I’ve seen have just been pictures of the person/their family with ten years between them.

No I’ve not posted. I’m just as far and ugly, only my hair’s grey too now. Don’t want to depress myself by highlighting it!

PanicAndRun · 01/01/2020 13:41

Ohh aren't you special ,edgy and so above it all using FB only for world saving, philosophical posts .

I hadn't even noticed these were a thing as I haven't checked fb in the past few days and it was only the threads on here that drew my attention to it.

U2HasTheEdge · 01/01/2020 13:42

I don't get why so many MNers hate so much about FB but continue to use it or follow people who annoy them.

FB is not compulsory. I just scroll past the things I don't care to read or stop following people. If FB is annoying you enough to start yet another thread moaning about it maybe it isn't for you?

eveshopper · 01/01/2020 13:48

I'm actually really enjoying reading them but I'm a nosey bastard anyway

TheGinGenie · 01/01/2020 13:48

Reading people's thoughts and feelings is the reason I use social media. Long thoughtful posts are my favourite to read. What do you want from social media if not to find out about people's lives?

PanicAndRun · 01/01/2020 13:50

I don't get why so many MNers hate so much about FB but continue to use it or follow people who annoy them.

How else will they find content to sneer at and feel superior about?

TheGinGenie · 01/01/2020 13:51

I would argue that just wishing people happy new year and moving on is a lot more meaningless than reflecting on your year.

TheGinGenie · 01/01/2020 13:52

Spot on @PanicAndRun

alittleprivacy · 01/01/2020 13:56

I don't think it's that odd to reflect on the past decade when a new one (arguably) begins. Especially at the age most of my peers are at because the last decade was one where most of us became parents. I won't be facebooking it for two reasons, though. One, it's been 10 years, we've all been through life changing shit and we have absolutely no fucking idea what the next decade will bring regardless of where we are now. Two, I'm not willing to be publicly honest about many of the actual biggest parts of my life and I doubt that most of the public reflectors are either.

My life has changed massively in the last 10 years and absolutely for the better because my life was vile yet about to get so, so much worse, 10 years ago. Right now, it's got it's challenges but I'm so much happier. My son brings me constant joy. My life is full of respect and love. My job is far from perfect and absolutely not what I wanted at this point of my life, but it's often lovely too. My home is not what I thought I'd have a decade ago but it's kind of perfect. I have a hobby that is literally a fantasy come true. I feel a decade younger than I did a decade ago. I'm probably physically a decade younger because I was falling apart from stress back then.

But I could be hit by a bus in a few minutes. Who the fuck knows. I feel positive but could still be about to enter an even worse period of my life.

BanginChoons · 01/01/2020 14:03

I've struggled with it all year. There have been a lot of "10 year challenge" type posts throughout the year. My daughter was stillborn 10 years ago, so the first half of the year I was pregnant with her, and the second half of the year I was going through the darkest times I have experienced.
I am avoiding fb for a few days. People shouldn't have to restrict what they post to save my feelings.
