Too early to take the decorations down?

Ive just taken the tree down, as find the decorations depressing after Christmas is over, but my DD (24) thinks I have taken them down too soon. I know its unlucky having them up after 6th January but is there a date that is too soon to take them down.

I put them up in November as we were away for 3 weeks of December, so they have been up a while, I feel bad that I have upset my DD though.

Christmas isn't over though. It's still Christmas until the 6th Jan! That being said we always take the decorations down the day before the children go back to school. When I was a child I used to hate coming home from school in January and the decorations were still up.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 29/12/2019 03:43

Mine are down.

Gave my house a good scrub the day after Boxing Day and it all went away.

Christmas is only one day, really. The tree looks good with presents under it but once they're gone and the cats have pulled off the decorations it looks a bit sad.

Also don't want to start tye New Year with it up.

Oopsypoopsyloopsy · 29/12/2019 03:46

Mine are coming down tomorrow, I can’t wait. I love Christmas but I want to have a really good tidy up and clean!

Jenasaurus · 29/12/2019 04:10

that's how I felt, we had a party on Christmas Day, I went to bed at 1am leaving the younger ones to carry on, then I came down on Boxing Day, to the typical morning after mess, and got a bit carried away tidying up. I removed all decorations bar the tree on Boxing Day morning, and the tree has come down today now as well.

The room was lovely when the decorations were all up, but as PP have said it looks less pretty when the presents have been opened, I just wanted to declutter and clean up and get back to normal

I don't feel so bad now I know others have done the same.

If my DC were young then I would have left them up longer, but my youngest is 24 so I thought wouldn't be so disappointed.

Mine are down, have a section booked for tomorrow so needed to sort out the room for the baby and didn't want the hassle of doing it in pain x

StealthPussy · 29/12/2019 04:32

Taken Xmas cards away as they were annoying and in the way. Lights and tree still up but will take down by NYE as I don’t like to start the new year with them up.,

Emmelina · 29/12/2019 04:38

Not at all. Mine come down tomorrow as it’s DD’s birthday Tuesday and I want to keep the occasions separate for as long as I can get away with!

ManiacalLapwing · 29/12/2019 04:52

It's very much still Christmas. I think any time between New Year and Twelfth Night is fine though.

SunshineInMySprocket · 29/12/2019 05:03

I don’t think there is a set ‘too soon’ date. I usually wait until 6th but will be taking everything down before school starts again this time. We have guests, exams and mocks in that first week back so want to be as prepared as possible!

TinselTortoise · 29/12/2019 05:06

Mine came down on the 27th. The living room now looks nice and tidy. DH is back at work today so it feels like xmas is now over for me.

minesagin37 · 29/12/2019 05:06

Depressing. Can't you learn to chill?

Koalablue · 29/12/2019 05:29

I'm thinking of taking mine down today. We're having a cool change in the weather so it makes sense. I also like it down before the new year as we've got a few new year birthdays.

Charliescar · 29/12/2019 05:31

When did you put them up ?

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/12/2019 05:38

Christmas isn't one day though. If you're actually looking at Christmas, it's until twelfth night. If you understand the actual pagan traditions Christmas is based on, it's to brighten and lighten your house with green and light through the cold, dark, long nights. Neither of which are really over yet.

Same people who wash sheets all the days of their life, antibac everything and iron underwear I assume.

commoncoot · 29/12/2019 05:43

Ours are down already. But only because we needed the shave back for the kids to play in

surlycurly · 29/12/2019 05:49

There are lots of pagan traditions that I don't adhere to. There are lots of Christian traditions I don't adhere to. I flagrantly cherry pick the ones I like which includes celebrating Christmas but not actually doing any of the God stuff, and, shock horror, not being stuck with the decorations for an age. Mine will be down tomorrow and were down on the 29th last year. Do what you like OP. Your daughter will live. If that's the worst thing she can say to a therapist about you then you've done ok x

minesagin37 · 29/12/2019 05:52

You would hate to live in Sweden. The lights stay up well into January!

PlumsGalore · 29/12/2019 05:57

Usually take mine down the day after Boxing Day, I’m slacking this year....or maybe it’s because the 27th fell on a working day.

They will be gone today. They are never up on NYE. I like a clean slate and tidy house.

Ariadnepersephonecloud · 29/12/2019 06:32

Ours came down yesterday, I agree the tree looked a little sad, and I'm not religious so I don't care about how many days of Christmas... I love my lounge today, it looks so clean and big without the tree 😁

TheWinterCaillech · 29/12/2019 06:38

Mine are up from 13th until after NY, probably the 3rd or 4th this year.
Most of mine are Yule rather than Christmas; tree, lights, greenery and the like. It helps us kickstart the NY in the dark and gloom.

GinNotGym19 · 29/12/2019 06:46

I took mine down yesterday! I’ve had mine up since the 1st and like to take them down after Boxing Day I like them gone before nye. Also my front room is tiny and need the space back after new toys

MyHeartIsBrokeButIHaveSomeGlue · 29/12/2019 07:04

I find this taking down of decorations so depressing! It's still Christmas! If not until the 12th night, at least until after New Year's Eve! I think everyone just peaks too soon these days putting them up ridiculously early.

I'm also booked in for a section tomorrow but mine are still up and DH can deal with them before the 6th!

justdoityourself · 29/12/2019 07:19

Mine will be down New Year's Day! The DC will be going back to their respective cities that day so I intend to get the house back to normal and get the dog back in to normal routine.

YouOnlyLiveTwice · 29/12/2019 07:28

Ours came down last night. Wasn’t planned, I just got antsy whilst re-watching a film and did it. The room looks really spacious and clean now!
