Too early to take the decorations down?

Ive just taken the tree down, as find the decorations depressing after Christmas is over, but my DD (24) thinks I have taken them down too soon. I know its unlucky having them up after 6th January but is there a date that is too soon to take them down.

I put them up in November as we were away for 3 weeks of December, so they have been up a while, I feel bad that I have upset my DD though.

I never take mine down before new year, and often leave them up until the 5th.

DarwinLoves · 29/12/2019 09:02

We usually take ours down on the 4th. I think it's too early to take them down - it's still Christmas!

The thing that annoys me is the trend of people putting decorations up in November and then taking them all down on Boxing Day/27th because they are fed up of them - it's because they've been put up too early!

fessmess · 29/12/2019 09:02

It's a personal choice but I can't fathom decs down before the 2nd jan. The season is Advent to NY surely? Mine will come down next weekend.

Seren1979 · 29/12/2019 09:17

Mine were all kept on the 27th.

Charliescar · 29/12/2019 09:23

Please can everyone who has already taken their decs down day when they put them up ?

Charliescar · 29/12/2019 09:25

Why not wait to clean and tidy when the kids go back to school ? Surely it’s not really worth it til then anyway ?’

LEELULUMPKIN · 29/12/2019 09:34

My tree didn't go up till Christmas Eve and considering how much the bugger cost, I might keep it up til Easter. I like getting my money's worth! :)

BroomstickOfLove · 29/12/2019 09:35

We put our tree up just before the solstice, and take it down on Epiphany. I leave the wreath and the fireplace decorations until Candlemas, when I switch to seasonal early spring decorations.

surlycurly · 29/12/2019 09:36

Loving all the outrage about the solemnity of the twelve days of Christmas. I suspect that the Christian element to Christmas, and to the rest of the year, has not been observed in any other way than maybe a quick trip to church on either Christmas Eve or day. May be the only visit all year too. We culturally put up a tree and some decorations (admittedly some people put them up far too early) because that is a norm, not because of the advent or the 12 days. For the majority it's habit and superstition that makes us put them up or makes us take them down.

Take them down if you like, keep them up if you like, but don't be a hypocrite.

surlycurly · 29/12/2019 09:37

And I put my decorations up on the 15th

ExpletiveFairylighted · 29/12/2019 09:44

I wouldn't dream of taking them down before NY and normally wait till 12th Night. They go up mid December and are so beautiful, I can't imagine seeing in New Year with a bare, undecorated house.

Selene28 · 29/12/2019 09:44

Yes take everything down now! Christmas starts 1 Nov, right after Halloween in this country.

I saw some Easter chocolates in sainsburys a few days ago....

dementedpixie · 29/12/2019 09:47

I took my tree down yesterday but the window lights and icicles are still up as they don't take up space like the tree does

Isbii · 29/12/2019 09:48

I'd still take mine down on 26th/27th even if I put them up on the 24th! Grin prefer having the house back in order before NY.

FluffyEarMuffs · 29/12/2019 09:52

@rainbowslide I am SO pleased you added a location disclaimer there!!!

Stopped me irrationally stressing re spiders 😂

dontyouwishyour · 29/12/2019 09:53

Always take down 1st Jan

Charliescar · 29/12/2019 09:55

I like to decorate with natural decorations . Eg not lots of Santa , tinsel etc . I think you tire less quickly of this .
Christmas is really a pagan celebration of midwinter . It’s about bringing light and greenery into the home . I love this . I love candles and greenery .
I prefer a more Scandinavian Christmas, I hate a b & m Christmas 😱

surlycurly · 29/12/2019 09:58

@Charliescar I'm the same as you. I don't own tinsel. I love Scandinavia and try and keep things as natural as possible because I prefer it. Lots of candles though... the place could go up like an inferno!

SantasHairyBallsack · 29/12/2019 09:58

I put them up in November

Shock

Ours are coming down today. They go up Christmas Eve.

1forAll74 · 29/12/2019 09:59

Its fine to take them all down, they get on your nerves after a few days.
I have a couple of vases of flowers on the windowsill to cheer things up.and ready for Easter ha ha.

Sallycinnamum · 29/12/2019 10:00

Ours are coming down today.

Our new cat loves the tree and has pulled most of the decorations off so now seems a good a time as any.

I do have lots of fairy lights in the lounge and kitchen diner though and leave them up all year round so the house still looks lovely and twinkle.

bridgetreilly · 29/12/2019 10:01

Your main mistake was putting them up in November! Put them up at a sensible time (no more than a week before Christmas Day) and then enjoy them throughout Christmas. Don't take them down before the new year.

Charliescar · 29/12/2019 10:03

I think it’s sad- the next generation are going to have a very different view of Christmas than what we had growing up .
You can’t even enjoy the run up to Christmas as the kids are at school and work . I am lucky enough to to have this week of abs am engorging the Christmas break .
We are still laying around watching movies , eating Christmas food etc .

OneForMeToo · 29/12/2019 10:06

By the time Boxing Day has been and gone Christmas is done. My decorations are mostly still up bar some I had to remove because o work from home and need the space back. Can’t wait for the rest to go it’s now just a depressing reminder of the fact there is nothing to look forward to in this grey wet country till spring.

MistyCloud · 29/12/2019 10:12

@Jenasaurus Hmmm, yeah, ours have been up since 1st December, and I am starting to feel like I don't care if they're up anymore now, and I have felt like this since late on the 27th. (And it would be nice to get the house clear, and polished and dusted properly!) Grin But I won't take them down til 2nd Jan.

So I picked YABU, coz it's a bit too early (IMO.) Smile
