Too early to take the decorations down?

Ive just taken the tree down, as find the decorations depressing after Christmas is over, but my DD (24) thinks I have taken them down too soon. I know its unlucky having them up after 6th January but is there a date that is too soon to take them down.

I put them up in November as we were away for 3 weeks of December, so they have been up a while, I feel bad that I have upset my DD though.

...ours went up 2 weeks ago - early for us but we were having a party.

We3kingsoforientareandabump · 29/12/2019 14:15

Mine are down because it is DS3 birthday today and I like it to be all about his special day rather than Xmas

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 29/12/2019 14:18

Last of the Christmas visitors was yesterday and as I am fed up of the cats knocking it over, playing with the babbles, Trying to chew the lights and pushing the ornaments off the mantle I have taken it all down and boxed it up for another year.
I put them up the week before Christmas so two weeks is plenty especially as there are no young children in the house.

gottagetbetter7 · 29/12/2019 14:31

Not that I believe in superstitions but the old wives tale is that is unlucky to still have them up after Twelvth Night (whenever that is) not that it is unlucky to take them down before Twelvth Night (sorry can't spell it never mind know when it is).

DickDewy · 29/12/2019 14:39

Yes, unlucky after - not before. All a nonsense anyway.

IAmLEA · 29/12/2019 14:43

It's not unlucky.
Take them down whenever you want.

I took mine down on Friday reason being my livingroom is cluttered as it is (4yr olds toys).

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 29/12/2019 14:50

We are taking the playroom, conservatory, pub shed and kitchen decs down today

The children will do their trees in their bedrooms when they can be bothered

We’ll take down the hall and living room decorations on the 4th and 5th of January as i dont like the living room looking so bare on new years day

Chillax

By the time Boxing Day has been and gone Christmas is done.

Has it though? Who says?

Put them up in March & take them down on the Christmas Day if you like, your tree, your house.

itcamefrombeckyvardysaccount · 29/12/2019 15:04

Just finished and I went into the loft for the first time in my life.

The loft fucking terrifies me because I always think of the film arachnophobia and the end where all the spiders come out. Well that's what I have always thought would happen in the loft.

It didn't and I did t even see a web.

BonnyConnie · 29/12/2019 15:04

Before Jan 1st is too soon. I usually keep them until 6thof Jan and take them down that evening/not longer after.

BonnyConnie · 29/12/2019 15:06

Also worth pointing out that Christmas doesn’t actually end until 6th ofJan (I’m pretty sure that’s the proper date, certainly orthodox churches use the 6th anyway).

annonymousse · 29/12/2019 15:09

Just finished tucking mine away until next year. I'm back to work tomorrow and don't want to come home to them. My house looks bare and the room looks huge without them. Unfortunately this effect won't last

helpneedshoes · 29/12/2019 15:10

Have the holidays changed that much in terms of people being back at work or not? Kids are definitely still off school.

Also i'm intrigued as to what these decorations are that cause so much mess?

easythere · 29/12/2019 15:38

I was going to take mine down this morning but DHs sister and kids are coming tonight so I've left it up.

Going to take it down when my girls are in bed.

I don't like taking the decorations into the new year, I like to give it a good scrub before January.

Molly123456 · 29/12/2019 15:54

Took mine down today, cleaned the house and bought lovely flowers. House now looks less cluttered. Christmas has gone bring on the fresh New Year.

Lunafortheloveogod · 29/12/2019 16:02

Ours went down on Boxing Day.. christmas was done and with ds this year we needed to put his new stuff somewhere.. duct taped to the ceiling was about the only other option. Everything fits fine without the tree, preplanned growing out of x n going into y fairly well.

Considering a smaller or thinner tree for following years as the big 7ft bugger takes up a fair chunk of space.

Molly123456 · 29/12/2019 16:19

liberate yourself and take the tree down. Christmas has gone 4 days ago, clean the house for the new year.

Charliescar · 29/12/2019 16:25

How much decorations do you all have that you need to have a good clean ??? I can clean perfectly well with my decorations

OnGoldenPond · 29/12/2019 18:57

Nooooo!! Shock

If you take the decorations down before Twelfth Night all the nasty ghouls and ghosties will get ya.

True fact.

hiphiphoorayback · 29/12/2019 19:08

I love the lights in the evening. The decorations are my favourite part of Christmas. I like to keep them up at least until the 2nd bit usually the 5th Jan otherwise it just seems like a materialism fest.

My house is spick and span but with trees and lights aswell. Grin

WombleOfTheThighs · 29/12/2019 19:22

Our tree didn't go up till about a week and a half before Christmas, I'm a total slattern and I'm itching to take it down; it's nothing to do with being smuggly, obsessively clean and tidy, as some of you are asserting. Also, so what that Christmas doesn't end until January 6th? It does in our house and I'm fed up of Christmas by the early evening of Boxing Day, though DH insists that the decorations stay up at least into New Year's Day. Not that he's allowed to touch them, mind Grin

WombleOfTheThighs · 29/12/2019 19:24

As others have said, it's traditionally unlucky to leave decorations after Twelfth Night, not unlucky to take them down before.

Carpathian2 · 29/12/2019 20:21

What? You didn't have them down by 1pm on Christmas Day?? You're so disorganised Confused
