Happy Impeachment! Next step is removal. (Trump thread 98)

In the last thread, Trump was impeached by Congress. Now the question is when the articles will be sent to the Senate for Trial, as - at this stage - there is no guarantee from Mitch McConnell of a fair trial. Trump clings to his belief that his call to Zelensky was “perfect”.

Speaking of Nancy Pelosi (link), doesn't Trump have a habit of tearing up his own documents? She's just following his example.

Let's hope this is a pyrrhic victory.

I disagree with the psychoanalyst's suggestion (in the Huff Post article) that
"“He, more than anyone, ‘knows’ subconsciously that the acquittal is undeserved"

I don't think that it is subconscious at all: I think he knows at an absolutely conscious level that he deserved impeachment and removal, just as much as he knows that he got dressed in the morning.

It seems to me a mistake to assume that he must be mad to behave as he does; I think it is a great deal more likely that he is simply bad. (He may well be mad as well: the two are not incompatible.)

AcrossthePond55 · 07/02/2020 15:22

I think we're in for a whole lotta hell between now and November. All I can do is don my hardhat and work on inner calm.

And pray that this will unite the Dem Party and outrage the undecided voter. And motivate them both to VOTE.

Personally, I think the Iowa results were, well, 'fiddled with'. But that's (hopefully) straying into tin hat territory. We'll see what happens in New Hampshire.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/02/2020 15:38

I can't help wishing Bernie would bog off. He is eighty next year and has had a heart attack: how easy does that make it for Trump to attack him on health-and-age grounds? That worked against Clinton, and she is younger and fitter than Trump!

And if he doesn't do it soon he will split the vote against Trump, or rather, cause the people who wanted him to sulk and not be prepared to vote for whoever beats him, and mess things up just as he did last time.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 07/02/2020 18:12

Oh well, that's all right then. Hmm

Sen. Collins says retribution after impeachment acquittal would not be appropriate
Maine's Republican senator defended her vote not to impeach President Trump but said she'll continue to challenge him when appropriate.

As long as Collins is sure it's in keeping ...

I don't think it's subconscious either Asking. I hope he grasps it, however fleetingly and I also hope it keeps him up at night.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/02/2020 20:55

I may be being forgetful, but when exactly was it that Senator Collins challenged Trump? She says she will go on doing that when it is in keeping, but I am unsure how she can go on doing something that she hasn't started to do.

In several news bulletins overnight the BBC World Service mentioned the Iowa caucus with Pete Buttigieg coming first and Bernie Sanders second, and Joe Biden being driven back to fourth place, but didn't say who had been in third place. I had to wait until the following morning to find out -- though I did assume it must be Elizabeth Warren.

As expected:

www.cnn.com/2020/02/07/politics/alex-vindman-donald-trump-impeachment/index.html

Serves a double purpose. Revenge and instilling fear in those who might want to do the right thing and testify or whistleblow. Wonder who's next on the Scrotus hit list?

Vindman will return to duty at the Pentagon. Scrotus can 'fire' him from the Security Council but not drum him out of the military. What remains to be seen is what pressure is put on Pentagon officials to put him in some menial assignment as 'punishment'. Every workplace has its own known 'Siberia'.

AcrossthePond55 · 07/02/2020 21:17

I may be being forgetful, but when exactly was it that Senator Collins challenged Trump?

Well if you consider 'challenging Trump' to be talking shit about voting with the Dems 'based on principles and ethics' then backing down at the last minute and voting how Scrotus wants her to vote, then she's done that lots and lots. If by 'challenging' you mean standing tall and speaking truth to power, well then, I can't think of a single instance.

Gordon Sondlund now being recalled from his post. And Col Vindman's twin has also been fired. Vindman's brother was not involved in the impeachment.

Sondland said in a statement Friday that he is being recalled from his post. "I was advised today that the President intends to recall me effective immediately as United States Ambassador to the European Union," Sondland said.

All three serve 'at the pleasure of the President' so there's not a damned thing anyone can do.

See sees his acquittal as carte blanche and that his philosophy of 'Article 2 says I can do anything I want' is now the law of the Land.

On that point touched on earlier I don't think Trump has much of a conscience but he can be wounded like any narcissist and it will rankle him.

Are you watching the debate Across?

AcrossthePond55 · 08/02/2020 13:54

Shame on me, no, lion.

DH and I got involved in watching The Pharmacist on Netflix and totally forgot about it! It's really good and shows what the 'Power of One' can do if one is motivated and determined.

From what I'm reading Biden is suddenly losing momentum. I'm starting to veer into Tin Hat Territory about foreign influence/vote hacking so I need to 're-centre' myself.

My state's primary is early March. I need to start paying closer attention!
