Happy Impeachment! Next step is removal. (Trump thread 98)

In the last thread, Trump was impeached by Congress. Now the question is when the articles will be sent to the Senate for Trial, as - at this stage - there is no guarantee from Mitch McConnell of a fair trial. Trump clings to his belief that his call to Zelensky was “perfect”.

Pete, I'm not real surprised at. He's a 'midwestern boy' so many Iowans may identify with that, despite 'the gay'.

Sanders I am surprised at, but I have no idea how Sanders did in the midwest vs Hillary in 2016.

I'm surprised at Biden apparently scoring so low, too. I would have thought they'd go for a moderate before a more 'radical' candidate.

But Poli-Sci was never my bailiwick. Looking forward to Rachel to reassure myself that there's nothing 'nefarious' in these results.

SOTU to come ...

TheClaws · 04/02/2020 23:39

I’m still deciding if I’ll watch SOTU or not. That’s an awful long time to listen to his voice and watch him go through his routine. I’m not sure I can handle that and come out the other end undamaged ...

I can't watch him at all. Gin

I'll read the reviews.

cozietoesie · 05/02/2020 00:40

Claws and lion. Defend the slot. It might be worth watching if only for analytical purposes.

Ah. Assuming the final results aren't that different, it's a four horse race.
It looks like Iowa shares my (many people's?) lack of good impression of Biden, despite some popularity. Another midly incoherent old white man who lives in Obama's shadow.
A bit sad for Warren, and disappointed, but she may be too far left but not quite Bernie for the left in the Democrats. Still, she has a chance and I like her as a candidate. At least she's taller than Hillary and she she may benefit indirectly from Pelosi's successful shows of strength against Trump. She actually has plans too.
Bernie is still Bernie. He almost got nomination from Hillary and it seemed like he got robbed of it then. Too old for my liking, but so are Biden and Pelosi.
Pete can be quite impressive, IMO and I'm glad he did well. Not because he's gay, not only because he seems well informed and coherent, but because he looks like he can avoid and overcome the well know Trump traps. Not sure he'll last the long race either way, but I think it's a positive if the electorate has responded well at this stage. Positive for him but also that the electorate may be looking for more than soundbites, even if he falls through.
Maybe I'll allow myself some measured optimism here. But Democrats will have to be able to rally behind one candidate.

TheClaws · 05/02/2020 05:58

15 or 20 minutes was all I could manage. Smile He really is odious. The way he tips his head to the left and waits for applause after delivering a lie is particularly vile; but his Republican toadies just stand and clap, stand and clap, as one, like frightened robots. It’s a phenomenon. He’s programmed them somehow. I don’t see how otherwise rational people would behave this way.

Didn't watch SOTU. I actually cannot bear looking at his cat bum mouth - and that's even before any of the drivel comes out.

I don't get the love for Bernie - he's not a Democrat, pops up every 4 years to say 'elect me' and then seems to do nothing of any political import the rest of the time. Plus he's old, white and to quote Martin O'Malley:
“Here’s a guy who has been a kind of stalwart of the National Rifle Association, a man who said immigrants steal our jobs right up until he ran for president, a guy who said the sound of John Kennedy’s voice made him nauseous.”

lionheart · 05/02/2020 08:14

'Why did you rip the speech up, Madam Speaker?.'

'Because it was the courteous thing to do considering the alternatives.'

Nevertheless.

Lweji · 05/02/2020 09:37

On a previous post, by Pelosi I meant Warren was also too old. I always get them mixed up. Shock
I wonder if a fair percentage of the electorate does too.

Before you even get to the faked surprise.

On Sunday, Trump said he will likely have a difficult time working with Democrats after his expected acquittal in the five-month impeachment saga on Wednesday.
"I'd like to, but it's pretty hard when you think about it, because it's been I use the word witch hunt, I use the word hoax. I see the hatred. I see the they don't care about fairness, they don't care about lying," Trump told Fox News.
"You look at the lies, you look at the reports that were done that were so false. The level of hypocrisy. I'm not sure that they can do it, to be honest. I think they just want to win, and it doesn't matter how they win."

Now let's just make that accurate:

Democrats will likely have a difficult time working with Trump after his expected acquittal in the five-month impeachment saga on Wednesday.

"We'd like to, but it's pretty hard when you think about it, because it's been we use the word witch hunt, we use the word hoax. We see the hatred. We see the he doesn't care about fairness, he doesn't care about lying," leading Democrats told Fox News.

I lasted about 10 minutes, on mute and reading the closed captions. It was all such bullshit I couldn't stand it one second longer.

Limbaugh getting the MoF for 'services to our Country' was just the icing on the cake. Un-fucking-believable.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 05/02/2020 14:26

For those that didn't/couldn't watch - here is Stephen Colbert to tell us all about the SOTU address.

Mitt Romney!!! He was tearful and unable to speak at one point. What a hero!

Emmelina · 05/02/2020 19:41

Legend. Even though Ttumo has probably threatened dire consequences to anyone voting against him, he still had the balls to stand up for what’s right. 🙌🏻

PerkingFaintly · 05/02/2020 20:30

ShockRomney!

The moment it's certain Trump is on his way out, there will be rush of rats. People still on the Trump ship are utterly terrified of any dissent – they know if they don't hang together, they'll hang separately. They can't be sure if this might signal the beginning of the end and the time has come to jump ship.

Romney on his own isn't enough, but if he emboldens someone else... and then someone else...

I'm not getting my hopes up for today. But... let's see.

Emmelina · 05/02/2020 20:40

That’s it. We need more people to be empowered by Romney! If it’s verbal votes like the others he’s quite far down the list, so let’s hope others before him are brave enough to vote to convict. We need more than Romney.

PerkingFaintly · 05/02/2020 21:09

Manchin & Sinema, the two Democrats who might have voted against in order to appease their marginal states, have now said they will vote for impeachment.
