Happy Impeachment! Next step is removal. (Trump thread 98)

In the last thread, Trump was impeached by Congress. Now the question is when the articles will be sent to the Senate for Trial, as - at this stage - there is no guarantee from Mitch McConnell of a fair trial. Trump clings to his belief that his call to Zelensky was “perfect”.

My DH says he's staying up to watch it tonight, he'll be fit for nothing tomorrow Shock

Thanks cozie.

For 12 minutes Kansas City relocated to Kansas thanks to a Trump tweet. Smile

AcrossthePond55 · 03/02/2020 12:39

To be fair ( not that Scrotus ever is) there is Kansas City Missouri and Kansas City Kansas, separated by the Missouri River.

cozietoesie · 03/02/2020 12:48

What's that word? Fair???

AcrossthePond55 · 03/02/2020 13:29

lol. Yeah, guess one should never use the words 'fair' and 'Scrotus' in the same sentence.

Today is Caucus Day in Iowa. It will be interesting to see, not just the Dem results, but if any of the local caucuses post results for anyone but Scrotus.

lionheart · 03/02/2020 18:30

The caucus thing is an interesting way to go about business. Smile

www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/feb/03/iowa-vote-latest-news-democratic-caucuses

'The Democratic presidential primary contest got off to a disastrous start on Monday after results from the highly anticipated Iowa Democratic caucuses were dramatically delayed due to “inconsistencies” in the reporting of the data.

The state’s Democratic party said it was performing “quality control” on the numbers “out of an abundance of caution” following reports of problems with a phone app used to relay vote tallies.'

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/02/2020 12:58

I do wish that they would just use a pencil and paper for voting with: I have lost count of the number of times that an election has been called in question because of the various machinery that was supposed to make voting easier.

How did they manage to have caucuses in (say) 1965? When there were no voting machines and no phone apps?

AcrossthePond55 · 04/02/2020 14:21

What. A. MESS!! We really, really didn't need this. The GOP is going to grab this and run with how 'disorganized' we are. They aren't going to mention that our worries about result-tampering may have been a big reason why things apparently went tits up. But I just woke up to the headlines so I haven't yet read about the problem in detail. Something went wrong with some reporting app??

DH, DS2, and I still do a paper ballot (fill in the bubble) since we vote 'permanent mail in'. DS1's county has opted for 100% mail in ballots. I think the rest of California still does the punchcard type ballot, but since it's county by county I may be wrong.

I agree. There needs to be a paper trail of some type.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/02/2020 14:45

Do they keep the paper votes after counting, though? They should.

Mailed in votes can be coerced, or stolen and filled in, or just fraudulent from the beginning; we discovered that in the UK recently. Which surprised precisely nobody, I suspect. One lot was caught because someone had applied for about thirty postal votes at a single two-up-two-down address.

AcrossthePond55 · 04/02/2020 15:00

Yes, they do keep them. But I don't know for how long.

Mailed in votes can be coerced
I agree. BFF's abusive husband filled hers in (for Trump) in the last presidential election.

or stolen and filled in, or just fraudulent from the beginning
There's a signature match required so hopefully stolen ballots would be caught. You're right about the fraudulent ones, though. I have to be honest I'm not sure of the cross matching they do with other data systems.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/02/2020 15:55

The problem with signature match has been that in some states, a surprising number of people whose ethnic origin is not White European don't seem to produce an identical signature every time they write it.

But I know of no way to deal with the problem of votes being withheld because people are deemed to be of the wrong ethnicity by those who have got control of the voting system, short of lining the people in charge who are caught doing this up against a wall and mowing them down with an Uzi...

AcrossthePond55 · 04/02/2020 17:23

I'm good with that Asking Grin

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/02/2020 17:37

I suppose the Democrats gerrymander too, but they don't seem quite so hot on simple vote-denial as the Republicans.

lionheart · 04/02/2020 18:03

Ooh ...

Senator Gary Peters
@SenGaryPeters

'As an officer in the U.S. Navy Reserve and as a U.S. Senator, I took an oath to support the U.S. Constitution. After solemn consideration of the facts, I will vote to hold the President accountable for his actions.'

Emmelina · 04/02/2020 18:42

It’s the Republicans we need to hold Trump accountable, I’m sure all the Democrats intend to do so but they’re not enough on their own. We need some republicans to switch sides.

It seems like it's a race between Buttigieg and Sanders.

Isn't Sanders too far to the left?
I like Pete but do you think the US is ready for him? Intelectualy Trump's no match for him but do you think he's tough enough? Trump will get the knock down sound bite and Pete will be trying to give a nuanced and coherent reply. Do you think that will be enough? Does he really have the experience?

I want to see the full tickets.
