Happy Impeachment! Next step is removal. (Trump thread 98)

In the last thread, Trump was impeached by Congress. Now the question is when the articles will be sent to the Senate for Trial, as - at this stage - there is no guarantee from Mitch McConnell of a fair trial. Trump clings to his belief that his call to Zelensky was “perfect”.

On the upside, a president can be impeached more than once. But I assume it has to be on different grounds. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Roussette · 31/01/2020 20:56

Thanks Across... impeachment no. 2 coming up then...

"The attorney for Lev Parnas has sent a letter to McConnell saying, "If Lev Parnas was called as a witness, he would provide testimony based upon personal knowledge, corroborated by physical evidence ... directly relevant to the President's impeachment inquiry."

Debate over. Not sure what's going on now. MSNBC is theorizing that there may be an 'open mike' period of 3 days for senators to debate/discuss/give interviews before a vote on Monday. Or it could just be a period of time for McConnell to be sure he has his votes. MSNBC musing that the vote may not be as 'sure' as was previously thought. (Hope springs eternal, I guess)

At any rate Chief Justice Roberts has left the podium and McConnell is milling about talking to various people, including Sen Schumer.

Roussette · 31/01/2020 22:15

Thanks Across. I've been confused and reading on Twitter the vote has been done, then the opposite.

AcrossthePond55 · 31/01/2020 22:44

Vote going on. Collins & Romney 'aye' but it won't be enough to carry the day. There will be no witnesses.

Senate in recess until 'the Leader calls them back into session'. This will presumably be Monday for the vote to convict/acquit.

TheClaws · 31/01/2020 23:35

Done. No witnesses.

OP posts:
TheClaws · 31/01/2020 23:39

I didn’t think they would vote for witnesses, but it is still disappointing. However, it does reflect badly on the GOP. It is clear they are covering up for Trump. They know having witnesses would have been a disaster. In election terms, this is a bad move for them.

So, closing arguments are propose for Monday, the vote on Wednesday. MSNBC says that the Senate will go back into session 'momentarily' to vote on final procedural questions & amendments.

Leaannb · 01/02/2020 00:51

@TheClaws. No it’s not. It’s perfect for them. Our re-election cycle is just heating up and they have better things to do. Like get re-elected. Honestly, Trump is really popular with voters. He will be re-elected. Democrats are going to be too busy trying to save their jobs to worry anymore about his. This was a complete and total waste of time that did nothing but divide our country even more. Instead of figuring out which Democrat would have the best chance of beating Trump they wasted months on this nonsense effectively guaranteeing Trumps re-election

TheClaws · 01/02/2020 01:53

Sure, Leaannb. You’re okay with open corruption? You must be, as you just called it “nonsense”. Get ready for more of the same, then.

They had to do this--it was the right thing to do, to put the country and the rule of law first.

On this vote... surely it is a short term advantage for the GOP, like a sticking plaster on a nasty wound?

Do they just want a few more months of doing what they want before election time...

I do hope this reflects so badly on them, election time that will show..

On another note, Trump is extending his travel ban to more countries...

They think people will forget. They can create distractions, fabricate a different story. He is persecuted. He was acquitted ... MAGA, MAGA, MAGA.

They won't escape the fall-out of Bolton, or further investigations and leaks but they won't care as long as they get that second term.

ludothedog · 01/02/2020 10:10

I disagree. Trump showed the world who he was and he was still voted in. His MAGA followers and the GOP like that he cheats and that he is corrupt. They know who he is and that's why they voted for him, this will just prove their point. As for independents, as long as the economy is fine they will hold their noses and vote for him again, like they did in 2016.

The only hope in this election is those that didn't vote in 2016 because they didn't like Clinton will be motivated to get out and vote against Trump or that the economy takes a nose dive.

Sorry, I don't feel very positive today, infact the opposite, quite despondent and hopeless Sad

This is pretty much the way we're feeling ludo. Right now we're feeling that we'd vote for a trained monkey if that was the nominee. From here on out, it's all about getting out the vote.

It's very rare that I want time to speed forward. But I wish that this year was all over. The electioneering from the Repugs is going to be unbearable. And the Dems running need to understand that, yes it's about getting yourself the nomination, but the bigger picture is that it's really about building a coalition to back the actual nominee AND about not giving the Repugs any more ammo than they already have. The divisiveness and mud-slinging is playing right into their hands. And IMO Bernie's failure to jump right up and tell his supporters to vote for Hillary was a major reason we lost the election.

Well, onwards and upwards. There are rallies to attend, pamphlets to pass out, and volunteering to do. The best way (IMO) to battle this depression is to get out and DO something!
