Happy Impeachment! Next step is removal. (Trump thread 98)

In the last thread, Trump was impeached by Congress. Now the question is when the articles will be sent to the Senate for Trial, as - at this stage - there is no guarantee from Mitch McConnell of a fair trial. Trump clings to his belief that his call to Zelensky was “perfect”.

Roussette, today is the last Q&A session. It sounds as if the vote will be tomorrow (Friday). But it also sounds as if the vote is (still) a foregone conclusion.

Thanks Across

AcrossthePond55 · 30/01/2020 18:51

Welcome.

What drives me crazy is that both sides pretty much agree (grudgingly on the GOP side) that if it was a secret vote, the motion to call witnesses would pass by a 'good sized' margin.

Hell, if it were to be a secret vote, 'common wisdom' has it that Scrotus would stand a very good chance of being removed.

Can you just imagine sitting in a criminal trial knowing that, despite the evidence, the accused was going to be acquitted because a hit man was sitting in the courtroom giving the stink eye to the jury? That this hit man was telling them secretly "If you know what's good for you...."? That's the exactly what's going on with the GOP senators. Anyone who wants to stray from Midnight Moscow Mitch's plan is being told "You'll never work in this town again". And not one single one of them has the courage to do what their conscience is telling them to do.

It's one of the main reasons why I have to turn it off at times. We can handle the truth. But those GOP coward-senators can't.

I just logged in for the first time in ooh umm I think I wasn't even born yet, or it certainly feels that long since Trump was elected. I've still followed all the threads, and thank you all for your endurance, persistence and the laughs with the cries too, and thanks even to the people who support Trump coming on, if only they'd stay and have a conversation and not just slag ppl off then disappear but hey ho.

What motivated me to actually log in was your latest post Across, your main para is the best way I've heard it described, and in a way that everybody can understand just what is going on, rather than the somewhat bellicose rhetoric of the politicians, and am hoping you post it everywhere you do social media. I don't have a Twitter acc, or insta or others and I deleted my FB acc a while back, but your post deserves to go viral imo.

Thanks Mirador! But I don't do SM, either. No FB, IG, etc so my post will have to be enshrined only on this MN thread.

And IMO there's no better place!

Watched Trump brag about his popularity among farmers.
I suppose that if you go bankrupt then you don't count as a farmer. Hmm

Well, today will be 'it'. It's widely believed that the GOP has the votes to vote down the calling of witnesses. Their 'rationale' seems to be that, yes, Scrotus did a quid pro quo but that it 'doesn't rise to the level of impeachment' and therefore no witnesses are needed as acquittal will follow. One senator has said that acquittal is 'for the good of the Country', sounding suspiciously like Dershowitz's 'if POTUS thinks it's good for the country, it's not impeachable' argument.

I know it was always a foregone conclusion, but still it is hard to take. Chances are we will NOT be watching the vote. It would feel like using local anesthesia in order to watch your own appendix being taken out. No thank you, I may know what's going to happen but I certainly don't need to watch. And I know this is really minor, but I'm just not going to be able to bear his gloating.

In other news, Happy Brexit Day (not). Looks like we're all in for a bit of a downer today. Lots of Gin and Cake and 🚬 for us all. (That last is as close to a spliff as I could find for those of us where it's legal)

mrsBtheparker · 31/01/2020 14:38

I've not read all of this thread but with a Senate held by the Republicans was there ever a chance that he would be found guilty? Has this given an impetus to another Republican victory in November?

I've been surprised in the US this year of the level of support for Trump among people who live away from the two coasts.

Roussette · 31/01/2020 14:57

Thank you Across. Yes today is a sad bad day AFAIC. I'm dreading the ridiculous reporting on the 11pm end of EU for us. I just hope it rains for Farage's pathetic jingoistic celebration in Parliament Square. Torrential rain... the sort that soaks you right through to your underpants!

So.... Romney and Collins have voted for witnesses, does that mean the vote will be tight?

Lordfrontpaw · 31/01/2020 15:14

I wonder if the locals will be happy at the caterwauling of ‘rule Britannia’ when it kicks off in parliament sq?

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 31/01/2020 15:41

How low is this?

"US commerce secretary Wilbur Ross has said the deadly coronavirus outbreak in China could be positive for the American economy."

TheNorthWestPawsage · 31/01/2020 18:36

Murkowski says she'll vote against going to witnesses - so GOP have the votes to acquit Angry

Lordfrontpaw · 31/01/2020 18:38

So American politicians have shown themselves for what they are. How can the American public trust them - the system sucks and ‘the swamp’ has really shown their true colours.

Emmelina · 31/01/2020 18:58

“Just because actions meet a standard of impeachment does not mean it is in the best interest of the country to remove a President from office,” Rubio said.

So, everyone agrees he’s guilty AF but removing a president isn’t in the best interests of the country, so he should stay and screw everyone over some more.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 31/01/2020 18:58

This with knobs on >>>>

He’s reckless. He’s incompetent. He’s lazy. He’s ignorant. He’s abusive. He’s anti-democratic. He’s cruel. He’s vengeful. He’s shameless. He’s a pathological liar.

This? This is the man Republicans want to give maximum power? This is the man they are making equal to the state.

Ffs. “President Donald Trump on Friday relaxed Obama-era restrictions on the U.S. military’s use of land mines” is he planning on bringing back (I can’t even say it).

AcrossthePond55 · 31/01/2020 19:44

No voting yet Roussette. They may have said that's the way they're going to vote but when it comes down to it, I'm not holding my breath.

Although with Murkowski voting nay, Mitch may permit them to vote aye as a token gesture ("See? We aren't partisan at all!!")

New revelation from Bolton's book. Scrotus told him directly to work with Rudy on pressuring Ukraine. Will it make a difference? Not one tiny bit.
