Happy Impeachment! Next step is removal. (Trump thread 98)

In the last thread, Trump was impeached by Congress. Now the question is when the articles will be sent to the Senate for Trial, as - at this stage - there is no guarantee from Mitch McConnell of a fair trial. Trump clings to his belief that his call to Zelensky was “perfect”.

TBF, members of both parties sometimes use their time to have their say rather than listen to the witness.

But I've noticed quite extreme "not in good faith" behaviour from some Republicans – can't remember exact examples, um, Jim Jordan and Doug Collins, perhaps?

So basically there will be folk using their hearing time as a broadcast platform for whatever evidence-free conspiracy theory they're pushing this week.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 15/01/2020 16:27

Thanks, Perking; that makes sense.

Presumably they can do that with any witness who is called, so calling Hunter Biden isn't essential for them? Or even all that necessary? Just something they can make a fuss about?

lionheart · 15/01/2020 17:02

They think that mud sticks.

PerkingFaintly · 15/01/2020 17:23

Well, they want the face on the TV to match the person they're trying to smear. All about the visuals, you know. But I'm sure they'll have a good go even if they don't get the matching faces.

Of course that's part of the reason Trump won't appear in person – he doesn't want to look like he's on trial, even though he is.

Well, that and his inability not to commit perjury, his word-salad problems, and the fact no one wants to deal with his temper tantrum at being questioned or embarrassed.

The Republicans are too scared to let their champion be seen in his full glory by the American people.Hmm

RhinoskinhaveI · 15/01/2020 17:34

Trump won't appear in person
it would be such a great big beautiful thing to watch, how I long to see him in the dock, he'd try and turn it into one of his rallies, sniffing and snorting and drawling away

Lweji · 15/01/2020 17:40

Only indirectly Trump, or not Wink, the Russian PM has resigned and Putin is preparing to change the Constitution for Parliament to choose the PM, plus stricter rules for Presidential candidates.
This is his last legal term, and who wants to bet he'll become the new PM after it?

Lweji · 15/01/2020 17:41

Sorry, no link. I read it in Portuguese news.

RhinoskinhaveI · 15/01/2020 17:48

urgh Putin, crouching over Russia like Smaug crouching over his hoard:(

Roussette · 15/01/2020 18:21

Here's a link explaining it.

It's big news I think, not that I'm up on what goes on in Russia

@Lordfrontpaw

Look at it like a criminal trial and replace the names. In the US, the evidence is presented to a Grand Jury (the House) and the GJ (the House) is the body that returns an indictment (decides to impeach and refer to the Senate for trial). The GJ (House) doesn't decide if the person is guilty, they say "Yes, there is enough evidence for a trial and for a jury (the Senate) to decide guilt/innocence". The case then moves to the proper court of jurisdiction (the Senate) for a trial.

I don't know enough about the UK system to draw equivalents. I guess in this case the House would be the equivalent of the Crown Prosecutor? The CP decides if a trial should be held, they don't render the actual verdict.

Lordfrontpaw · 15/01/2020 18:48

👩‍⚖️ I say guilty...

AcrossthePond55 · 15/01/2020 19:04

I agree!!!

Nothing to add here.

'As commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Soleimani was a big name. In the president’s mind, killing Soleimani could have seemed like an opportunity to make himself the commander-in-chief willing to do what no one else would risk. Again, it appears to have been more about Trump, and the potential for headlines, rather than the intelligence. It also seems that the president’s preference for Soleimani’s overtly targeted killing reflects the same resistance to Intelligence Community input as did his surprise and uncoordinated orders to withdraw the U.S. military from northern Syria and its resulting accommodation of Turkey’s destabilizing and bloody invasion. '

extra-terrestrial adversaries
this is a clue to trump's next attempt to deflect attention from the peach, he's going to disclose contact from aliens
(you heard it here first!!)

lionheart · 15/01/2020 21:57

That would not surprise me.

Doesn't he get access to all of those super secret service files (admittedly, I 'know' this because of The West Wing)?

He could blab about Area 51 ...

The Truth is out There. Smile

Of course, whatever he says about anything is a lie.

lionheart · 15/01/2020 22:01

Can you imagine the headline?

'President reads secret files and reveals truth about Roswell.'

Nobody would believe it because he doesn't read and can only lie.

Smile

I'm starting to see why he felt the need for a lawyer- big compliment to Rachel, though.
