Happy Impeachment! Next step is removal. (Trump thread 98)

In the last thread, Trump was impeached by Congress. Now the question is when the articles will be sent to the Senate for Trial, as - at this stage - there is no guarantee from Mitch McConnell of a fair trial. Trump clings to his belief that his call to Zelensky was “perfect”.

Susan Collins being slippery and evasive again:

Trump impeachment: House sends historic case to Senate
www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-51126431
"Ms Collins said: "My position is that there should be a vote on whether or not witnesses should be called."

So, dodging responsibility yet again. A vote along party lines would go against calling witnesses, but Collins gets out of having to justify the position. Nice.

She really, really reminds me of someone I know, can't quite remember who. Very big on "a soft answer turneth away wrath," while doing exactly what the heck they like.

Lev Parnas is spilling the beans on someone who has the modus operandi of an (albeit inept) mafia boss...does he want a concrete overcoat?
Who does Lev really work for??

surely trumpypumpy is toast now

Not as long as the GOP has the majority in the Senate. As long as Scrotus is in office the GOP can pretty much push its pro big money, anti-social care, anti-environment agenda to its heart's content. They're raking in the cash for themselves and their big bucks donors. That is Scrotus' real 'bombproof'.

It would take a wholesale uprising of the Conservative constituency becoming in favour of removal for the Senate GOP to vote to remove from office. And that constituency is being kept happy with Scrotus' rallies, 'lock her up' chants, and 'panem et circenses'.

No, Scrotus will be publicly embarrassed (if that's even possible for him) by what will come out in the trial but in the end nothing will happen and he'll consider that he's 'won'. He's already said as much. It's pretty much the same way he's gotten away with every shitty thing he's ever done. And he'll end up thumbing his nose at the lot of us as he rides off into the sunset White House.

The most that we can hope from this is that the public revelations may change the minds (and votes) of more moderate Republicans and undecided voters.

AcrossthePond55 · 16/01/2020 18:09

Don't get me wrong. I hate this and I'm infuriated. I'd love nothing better than to see him frog-marched down the steps into a waiting chopper. But I'm just trying to temper my hopes with reality.

RhinoskinhaveI · 16/01/2020 18:20

I know, I know, I was being recklessly optimistic:(...but still things are unraveling, he must be uber stressed:o ->cue more ridiculous behaviour and shots to the lower appendages:o

Emmelina · 16/01/2020 18:47

He’s toned down his twitter rants since it was clear the articles were being sent. I won’t be so naive to think he’s feeling at all worried yet though.

lionheart · 16/01/2020 18:55

All the ducks are lining up.

www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/white-house-hold-on-ukraine-aid-violated-federal-law-congressional-watchdog-says/2020/01/16/060ea7aa-37a3-11ea-9c01-d674772db96b_story.html

'The White House violated federal law when it withheld security aid to Ukraine last year, according to a decision by a congressional watchdog released Thursday.

The Government Accountability Office, a nonpartisan agency that reports to Congress, found that the Trump administration broke a law that governs how the White House disburses money approved by Congress.'

Ephe17 · 16/01/2020 18:55

I cannot wait.
This will glorious!

Lordfrontpaw · 16/01/2020 19:02

So - being thick again - if all the evidence is pretty fanning and people still just vote along party lines anyway and let the bugger off - how do they get away with it?

Lordfrontpaw · 16/01/2020 19:03

Damming not fanning!

lionheart · 16/01/2020 19:13

Especially when they are even now signing and oath which demands impartiality and that they uphold the Constitution.

AcrossthePond55 · 16/01/2020 20:03

Oh, I agree. DH and I were watching the 'swearing the oath' ceremony in the Senate and every time they said his name (because you know he was watching) it must have been a swift rush of shit to his heart. He only likes to hear his name said in adoration. Combining the word 'trial' with his name must have made him furious!

I agree that more and more shit is swirling to the top of the cesspool that is his administration. But the fact is, that he really believes that he's done no wrong because, to quote another failed President, "If the President does it, then it isn't wrong". So if he's furious and frustrated it's not because he's been caught, it's because no one seems to 'get' that he simply can't be culpable.

Part 2 of Parnas tonight on Rachel.

The Trial starts next Tuesday at 1 pm EST.

Lordfrontpaw · 16/01/2020 20:08

If he wasn’t the most healthiestest and fittestest man ever to grace the planet according to all the doctors in the world - and has a certificate to prove it) I’d worry for his heart.

RhinoskinhaveI · 16/01/2020 20:10

shit is swirling to the top of the cesspool
trump has his head up his ass so he doesnt recognise shit, like a fish that doesnt see the water it swims in trump only knows shit

PerkingFaintly · 16/01/2020 20:11

They're signing an oath to remain impartial?!

Oh rilly.

How is Mitch McConnell going to cope with that?

Fingers crossed behind his back? Recusing himself? (unlikely)

Surely his previous statements put him at risk of prosecution for violating this oath, if he votes in the trial?

AcrossthePond55 · 16/01/2020 20:23

how do they get away with it?

Because there is no real 'oversight' in this procedure. The Constitution states that the Senate has 'full and final authority' in the matter of the Trial. The Senate does have provisions to expel a member and theoretically if someone stood up and shouted "He's guilty as hell, but I vote to acquit because I'm making beaucoup bucks from lobbyists to acquit" they just might take action. But since no one's going to do that, they'll just merrily violate their oath using the flimsiest justification and the rest of them will say "That's good enough for me".

The only possible 'penalty' as far as the American People go would be that they be voted out of office in the next election.

Off topic but one thing to remember is that the Chief Justice is there not as a judge, but as a 'referee'. He is there to see that the procedures are followed, but not to make 'rulings' nor to compel the calling of witnesses. So there aren't going to be any surprises from him.

AcrossthePond55 · 16/01/2020 20:24

When I say "the rest of them" I'm talking about the GOP majority, of course.
