It's been obvious for at least a couple of years, although China has a separate agenda, IMO. They're conducting a financial operation, while Russia with NK and Iran are more on the military (nuclear) front.
In relation to Iran, I'd say more than Republican Senators, Trump has been egged on by Bibi and the Saudis. But it's better for him to pass on the message that there's an internal reason.
Having said that, Putin may or may no be a genius, but such tensions play to his hands. Not leading to WWII, but to restore his influence and importance in key countries around Russia, as in the old days.
